Top 10 Best Money Tracker Apps in 2026

The best money tracker depends on whether you want to see where your money went, plan where it should go, monitor investments, or find recurring charges. For most people who want automated spending and cash-flow visibility, Quicken Simplifi is the strongest all-around starting point. YNAB is better for hands-on, zero-based budgeting; Monarch Money is a better fit for many couples; and Empower Personal Dashboard is a free option for investment and net-worth tracking.

This U.S.-focused guide separates budgeting apps from spending trackers, investment dashboards, and subscription tools. Prices and features can change; verify your bank support, device compatibility, and renewal price before signing up. The available pricing details are clearest for Simplifi, so other apps are compared by use case rather than by unverified current prices.

Quick picks

What counts as a money tracker?

A money tracker can import bank and credit-card transactions, categorize spending, show budgets, forecast bills and balances, monitor savings goals, or consolidate investments and debts. Some apps do most of these; others are specialists. A tracker that reports what you spent is not automatically a budgeting system that helps you decide what to spend next.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Tracking-first: Organizes past and current transactions, trends, and reports.
  • Planning-first: Asks you to assign income to categories before spending, as with zero-based or envelope budgeting.
  • Cash-flow focused: Highlights income timing, bills, and estimated available money.
  • Net-worth focused: Tracks assets, debts, and investments over time.
  • Subscription focused: Finds recurring charges and may offer cancellation or bill-management help.

If you mainly want awareness, a detailed budgeting method may feel like unnecessary work. If you need to change spending habits, a passive dashboard may not provide enough structure.

Quicken Simplifi Broad tracking and cash flow Flexible Spending Plan Designed for connected accounts; verify institutions Yes, with investment and retirement-oriented features Useful for shared visibility; confirm current sharing details No permanent free plan established here Quicken displays a $2.99/month annualized promotion; another page lists $6.99/month regular pricing Paid; forecasts need reliable setup and data
YNAB Proactive budgeting Zero-based: give each dollar a job Check current support and institution compatibility Not its main strength Can support shared budgeting; confirm plan terms Do not assume a permanent free tier Check official pricing Requires regular attention and a learning curve
Monarch Money Household dashboard Flexible budgets and goals Check specific institutions Broad financial visibility; verify the detail you need Designed for household use; confirm access and permissions Check current plan Check official pricing Paid, and potentially more than a simple tracker requires
Copilot Money Apple-focused tracking Automated spending review Verify institutions Check current feature details Verify mixed-device and sharing support No permanent free tier established here Check official pricing and platforms Apple emphasis may not suit Android households
Rocket Money Recurring charges and bills Subscription and bill management, not a full budgeting method Verify institution support Not its primary distinction Check sharing needs Freemium model; confirm included features Pricing and service terms can vary Not a substitute for detailed budgeting
Empower Personal Dashboard Free investment and net-worth view Not a zero-based budget Check account support Investment and net-worth focused Check household capabilities Free dashboard; review commercial disclosures Free access does not mean no cross-sell Less suited to detailed spending control
PocketGuard A simple available-to-spend figure Budgeting around obligations and remaining money Verify institutions Not its core use case Check current plan features Plan limits should be checked Check U.S. signup pricing A single figure can obscure irregular costs
Goodbudget Manual envelope budgeting Digital envelopes Manual-first approach; check current sync options Not its main purpose Useful for shared envelope habits; check plan limits Limited free option may be available; verify current terms Check official plan limits and pricing Manual entry takes time
EveryDollar Ramsey-style budgeting Category-based monthly budget Sync features may depend on plan Not a comprehensive investment tracker Check current sharing features Freemium; verify what is included Check official pricing Opinionated budgeting may not suit everyone
Money Manager or another manual ledger People avoiding bank links Manual categories and reports Manual-first; verify the specific app Usually not the main purpose Check synchronization and sharing Varies by app and platform Check the chosen app’s official listing Records can be incomplete if entries are missed

“Free” can mean a limited tier, a free dashboard with commercial cross-sell, or access for certain customers; it does not necessarily mean every feature is free. Verify current plans, devices, and institution coverage directly with each provider.

How the recommendations are judged

This is a use-case comparison, not a lab-tested scorecard or a claim that every app’s transaction sync performs equally well. The most important distinction is whether a product helps you plan, merely records activity, or focuses on investments or recurring bills. Also consider forecasting, account coverage, household access, platforms, total price, privacy choices, and what you can do if an account connection fails. Current primary-source pricing and feature details were available here for Simplifi; prices for the other products are left for readers to verify rather than presented as stale or unconfirmed figures.

The 10 best money tracker apps

1. Quicken Simplifi — best overall for broad money tracking

Best for: People replacing Mint or looking for automated spending, cash-flow, savings, and investment visibility without assigning every dollar in advance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Simplifi combines a Spending Plan with spending management, savings goals, reports, cash-flow projections, and investment-related features. Quicken describes it as a web-and-mobile personal-finance product. That breadth makes it a reasonable default for someone who wants a consolidated view and ongoing awareness rather than a strict budgeting method.

Pricing needs careful reading. Quicken’s pricing page displays a promotional $2.99 per month billed annually, marked against $5.99 per month, while another Quicken page lists a $6.99 monthly regular price. Treat the lower figure as an offer, not a guaranteed renewal price; check the checkout page for the offer duration, annual total, and renewal terms. Quicken also describes a 30-day money-back guarantee on its pricing comparison page.

Forecasts are estimates, not immediate certainty. Quicken’s Spending Plan guidance says new users may need several months of data for projections to become accurate. That matters especially if your income is irregular or your account history is limited. Simplifi is less prescriptive than YNAB, so choose YNAB instead if you want to actively allocate every dollar.

Skip it if: You do not want a paid subscription, need a manual-only ledger, or want a strict zero-based system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. YNAB — best for zero-based budgeting

Best for: People who want to make deliberate spending choices, pay down debt, handle irregular income, or stop overspending in categories.

YNAB is a budgeting method supported by software, not just a dashboard of transactions. Its core approach is to assign available money to jobs before spending. That makes it a stronger fit for active behavior change than for someone who only wants a monthly report.

The trade-off is effort: users need to keep categories current and engage with the budget regularly. It may feel like too much process if your only goal is to see balances and spending trends. Investment tracking is not its primary strength. Check YNAB’s official site for current price, trial terms, supported platforms, and account-connection details before joining.

Skip it if: You will not maintain a hands-on budget or mainly want portfolio and net-worth monitoring.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Monarch Money — best for couples and household visibility

Best for: Partners who want a shared view of accounts, budgets, goals, and household finances.

Rank #2
Taja Lined Spiral Journal for Women, A5 Cute Hardcover Notebook for Work
  • Sturdy Construction: Our Lined Spiral Journal Notebook is built to last with a sturdy metal twin-wire binding and a tough hardcover. The water-resistant cover shields your notes from damage, while the double-wire design allows for easy folding and flat laying.
  • High-Quality Paper: Crafted from 100 GSM thick, ink-friendly paper, our notebook prevents ink bleed-through and ghosting. It accommodates various pens, including ballpoint, gel, and fountain pens. Each page features a day header for effortless date tracking.
  • Organized and Functional Design: With 140 lined pages and a 6-page blank table of contents, our notebook offers ample space for note-taking and easy referencing. An inner pocket keeps miscellaneous items secure, and an elastic closure band ensures the notebook stays closed when not in use.
  • Versatile Usage: Suitable for office, school, and home environments, our notebook is perfect for journaling, note-taking, drawing, goal setting, Bible, and planning. It's a thoughtful present for friends, family, classmates, and colleagues.
  • Medium-Sized Portability: Measuring 6 inches x 8 inches, our medium notebook strikes the perfect balance between portability and functionality. Its sturdy construction and aesthetic design make it an ideal companion for all your writing endeavors.

Monarch is a broad personal-finance dashboard rather than a narrowly defined envelope system. It can make sense when the problem is that household information is scattered across individual and joint accounts. Before paying, check how the current plan handles separate logins, permissions, account visibility, shared budgets, and the institutions you use.

A comprehensive dashboard can improve visibility, but visibility by itself does not change spending. If one partner needs strict spending controls, agree on categories and responsibilities rather than assuming a shared screen will create a shared plan. Verify current price and device support on Monarch’s official site.

Skip it if: You need only a simple ledger or want the lowest-cost option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Copilot Money — best for Apple-focused users

Best for: People who prioritize a polished money-management interface and primarily use Apple devices.

Copilot is commonly positioned as an automated, design-led tracker for Apple users. It may suit people who are more likely to review spending when the app is pleasant to use. But interface quality does not guarantee reliable institution connections, and its Apple emphasis may be a poor fit for a household with Android or Windows users.

Check the official product pages for current iPhone, iPad, Mac, web, and Android availability, household features, supported institutions, and subscription terms. Do not assume platform coverage from an older comparison.

Skip it if: Your household needs confirmed cross-platform support that the current plan does not provide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Rocket Money — best for subscriptions and recurring bills

Best for: People trying to identify recurring charges or manage bills without first building a detailed budget.

Rocket Money’s clearest distinction is subscription discovery and bill-management assistance. That can be valuable if forgotten recurring charges are the immediate problem. It is not automatically a replacement for a planning-first budget: someone who needs category limits, savings plans, or dependable cash-flow planning may need a different app as well.

Review the current plan and the terms for any cancellation or bill-negotiation service before using it. Premium pricing may vary, and some services can have separate terms or fees. For any subscription, confirm whether the app identifies a charge, helps request cancellation, or actually completes a cancellation; those are different services.

Skip it if: You want a full, detailed budget as your main tool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Empower Personal Dashboard — best free option for investments and net worth

Best for: Investors who want a consolidated view of balances, assets, liabilities, and net worth, and who already budget elsewhere or do not need strict category controls.

HAUTOCO Accounting Ledger Book A5 Horizontal Ledger Books for Small Business Bookkeeping Expense Tracker Notebook for Home Budget Tracking Personal Finance Log Journal 8.3 x 6.2'', Dark Purple
  • Easy To Track Your Finances: HAUTOCO accounting ledger book keeps you on top of your expenses and income! Help you keep your money organized, spend well, and set and achieve financial goals
  • Premium Material: The A5 accounting ledger book has a total of 120 pages and 2040 lines of entries. It is made of 100gsm thick paper to reduce ink leakage; it is equipped with a waterproof and sturdy PP cover to protect the inner pages
  • Practical Design: Compact 8.3 x 6.2'' expense tracker notebook is easy to carry and features information pages, 2025 calendar, yearly financial goals page, and PVC pocket for storing important tickets and loose items
  • Manage Your Finances Effectively: Undated accounting books with number, date, description, account, payment or deposit amount, and total balance. You will be able to easily analyze your financial activities and quickly prepare accurate financial statements
  • Ideal For Small Business or Personal Use: An accounting log journal can track your business or personal financial status. With a clear record of transactions, you can find unnecessary expenses or fraudulent charges

Empower is identified as a free investment-tracking option in a Quicken comparison. Its strength is the investment and net-worth lens, not zero-based budgeting. A free dashboard can also be part of a broader commercial model, so review its disclosures and advisory-related marketing if you sign up.

Investment tracking is not the same as a brokerage account, tax-lot system, or personalized financial plan. Check what holdings, accounts, and calculations the current dashboard supports, and do not treat the display as investment or tax advice.

Skip it if: Your main need is strict control over day-to-day spending.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. PocketGuard — best for a simple “safe to spend” view

Best for: Beginners who want a quick indication of what remains after bills and planned obligations.

A simplified available-to-spend number can be easier to act on than a screen full of charts. The risk is that a single figure may hide assumptions. Annual insurance premiums, holiday spending, irregular income, and other lumpy costs need to be represented correctly, or the amount can look more spendable than it really is.

Check the current U.S. plan and price, institution support, and how the app treats goals and recurring expenses. If you are paid irregularly, test whether the setup reflects the timing and variability of your income before relying on a forecast.

Skip it if: You need complex household planning or investment analysis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Goodbudget — best for a manual envelope system

Best for: People who want to assign spending limits to envelopes and are comfortable entering transactions themselves.

Goodbudget offers a digital take on envelope budgeting. A manual-first workflow can avoid linking every account and encourage you to notice each purchase. It also asks more of you: missed entries mean the envelope balance is wrong. That friction can be a feature if it makes spending deliberate, or a reason the system falls behind.

Confirm current free-plan limits, paid features, device support, and any account-sync options on the official site. If you have many accounts and frequent card transactions, an automatic tracker may be more sustainable.

Skip it if: You need low-effort automatic aggregation across many accounts.

EveryDollar is an opinionated budgeting option whose appeal is closely tied to its associated financial guidance. That focus can be useful if you want a defined workflow rather than a flexible dashboard. It is less compelling if you mainly want detailed investment tracking, a broad net-worth picture, or extensive household-finance tools.

Check which features, including any bank synchronization, require a paid plan and verify current pricing and sharing options directly with the provider.

Skip it if: You do not want that budgeting approach or your priority is investment and portfolio visibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Money Manager or another manual ledger — best for avoiding bank links

Best for: People who prefer manual records, use cash frequently, or do not want to connect financial accounts to a tracker.

A manual ledger can record income, expenses, and categories without depending on a bank connection. Money Manager is one possible example, but the specific app matters: verify its publisher, privacy policy, platforms, price, export options, and whether household synchronization works the way you need.

The central trade-off is completeness. If you forget to enter transactions, your reports and balances will be wrong. A spreadsheet or paper ledger can serve the same role; choose the option you will actually maintain.

Skip it if: You need automatic transaction imports or do not want to maintain entries.

Choose an app based on your problem

  • I want an all-around tracker with cash-flow visibility: Quicken Simplifi.
  • I need to control every dollar: YNAB.
  • My partner and I need a shared household view: Monarch Money.
  • I use Apple devices and value interface design: Copilot Money, after checking current device support.
  • I want to find recurring charges: Rocket Money.
  • I want free investment and net-worth tracking: Empower Personal Dashboard.
  • I want one simplified available-to-spend figure: PocketGuard.
  • I want manual envelope budgeting: Goodbudget.
  • I follow Ramsey budgeting: EveryDollar.
  • I do not want to link bank accounts: A manual ledger, such as Money Manager, or a spreadsheet.

What to check before connecting accounts

Account aggregation is convenient, but it is not guaranteed to be complete or error-free. A bank can change its login process; an institution may require repeated authentication; a pending transaction can later post with a different amount; or a reconnect can produce duplicates. Some connections show investment balances without importing complete transaction histories. Check support for your specific bank, credit union, brokerage, retirement provider, and loan servicer before subscribing.

Credit cards deserve particular attention. A purchase is an expense; paying the card from a linked checking account is usually a transfer, not a second expense. If the payment is categorized as spending too, reports can double-count it. Also review refunds, annual fees, pending transactions, and transfers between your own accounts.

For couples, look beyond a “shared” label. Confirm whether both partners can log in separately, which accounts each can see, whether permissions differ, how shared goals work, and whether the app suits both people’s devices. Decide how to handle reimbursements and split purchases.

For irregular income, look for flexible targets, carryover categories, income timing, and a way to budget annual expenses. Forecasts are estimates, especially before the app has enough history. Simplifi’s documentation, for example, says projections may take several months of data to become more accurate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Privacy, security, and free plans

Linking a bank account gives an app access to financial information, so review the provider’s security and privacy documentation rather than relying on a generic “secure” claim. Check what account permissions are used, whether multi-factor authentication is supported, how data is retained and deleted, and whether you can export your records. Manual tracking avoids an account link but still leaves information with the app or service where you store it.

Free products can be useful, but “free” does not describe one business model. A free plan may limit features; an investment dashboard may offer advisory services; another product may sell premium features or provide bill-related services. Read disclosures and plan limits without assuming that a free app misuses data—or that it has no commercial incentives.

Investment features also vary. A dashboard may show account balances or holdings without providing cost basis, tax lots, complete performance, or retirement planning. Decide what you need and verify those specific functions. A tracker does not replace a brokerage, tax professional, or financial adviser.

When something goes wrong

  • A bank will not connect: Search the app’s institution directory, try its reconnect flow, and check whether the bank requires special authentication. Use CSV import or manual entry if available. Do not pay based only on a broad claim of bank coverage.
  • Transactions appear twice: Check whether reconnecting created a second account, and distinguish pending from posted activity. Reconcile against a bank statement before deleting records.
  • Transfers inflate spending: Mark transfers between accounts you own correctly, and check credit-card payments separately from purchases.
  • Categories are wrong: Use merchant rules if available, split mixed purchases, and review recurring merchants during the first month. Initial categorization is not a reliable test of long-term fit.
  • A forecast looks unrealistic: Check bill dates, income dates, annual expenses, and how much history the app has. Treat projections as estimates, not guaranteed balances.
  • The price changes: Check whether the quote is promotional, annualized, or app-store billed; compare the renewal total and review cancellation and refund terms.

Quicken says Simplifi subscriptions bought through Apple or Google are managed through those platforms, while direct subscriptions use Quicken’s process. See its subscription-management guidance before assuming all billing routes work the same way.

A practical setup checklist

  1. List the accounts you want to track: banks, cards, loans, brokerages, and retirement accounts.
  2. Check that each institution is supported, or decide which records you will enter manually.
  3. Choose whether you want a passive tracker, a hands-on budget, or an investment dashboard.
  4. Add regular income and recurring bills, then confirm their dates and amounts.
  5. Review credit-card payments and account transfers so they are not counted as extra spending.
  6. Add annual and irregular expenses, especially if you have variable income.
  7. Review categories and imported transactions weekly for the first month.
  8. After 30 days, assess whether the app’s workflow, sync, forecast, and price justify keeping it.

Frequently asked questions

Which app is best after Mint?

For a broad automated tracker with cash-flow features, start with Quicken Simplifi. Choose YNAB if the reason you are switching is a need for a more deliberate budgeting system, or Monarch if household sharing is central. First confirm that your specific institutions connect.

Are money tracker apps safe?

No app should be treated as risk-free. Review its privacy and security disclosures, account permissions, authentication options, data-retention and deletion controls, and export policy before linking accounts.

Is a free money tracker enough?

It can be enough for basic awareness or investment visibility. If you need structured debt control, detailed household budgets, or richer cash-flow planning, compare paid features against what you will actually use. Check the free plan’s limits and commercial disclosures.

Can one app track both investments and a budget?

Some broad dashboards combine spending and investment visibility, but the depth differs. A balance view is not the same as complete holdings, performance, cost basis, or a detailed budget. Verify each function rather than relying on a single “all-in-one” label.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which app works without linking a bank?

Manual-first options such as Goodbudget or a ledger app like Money Manager can work without automatic aggregation, as can a spreadsheet. Confirm the exact app’s current features and be prepared to enter transactions consistently.

Do money tracker apps automatically cancel subscriptions?

Finding a recurring charge is not the same as cancelling it. Check whether the service only identifies charges, guides you through cancellation, or offers a cancellation service, and read any separate terms or fees.

What should I do if a bank connection breaks?

Try the app’s reconnect flow and check for updated authentication requirements. If the connection remains unavailable, use CSV import or manual entry if supported, then reconcile against your bank statement when syncing resumes.

Is a tracker better than a spreadsheet?

It depends on whether automation is worth the account link and subscription for you. A spreadsheet offers control and can work well for a small number of accounts; an app can save entry time but may require connection troubleshooting and category cleanup.
