Yes. Apple CEO Tim Cook met then-president-elect Donald Trump for dinner at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, on Friday, December 13, 2024. The Associated Press later reported that Trump hosted Cook after Reuters initially reported that the meeting was planned.
The public record confirms the dinner, but not a detailed transcript, complete agenda, or specific agreement. Tariffs, Apple’s China-linked supply chain, and the company’s dispute with the European Union were relevant context—not publicly confirmed outcomes of the meal.

That distinction matters. The first report established a planned meeting, while the later AP report supported the conclusion that the dinner took place. Neither Apple nor Trump’s team released a detailed public account of the conversation at the time.

Some reports said the two men were expected to dine on the club’s patio. That was a reported logistical detail, not evidence of a formal venue announcement or public schedule.
What might Tim Cook and Trump have discussed?
No authoritative agenda or verbatim transcript was made public. Several subjects were nevertheless important enough to make them plausible topics of discussion.
Tariffs and Apple’s manufacturing supply chain
Trump had campaigned on tariffs, including measures that could affect goods imported from China. Apple’s manufacturing and supplier network relied heavily on overseas production, making tariff policy a significant business concern.

Contemporary coverage therefore identified tariffs, China, and Apple’s supply chain as likely subjects. But “likely” is the important qualification: the available reporting does not establish exactly what Cook asked for, whether Trump made a commitment, or whether the dinner produced a tariff exemption.

Apple’s dispute with the European Union
Trump said in October 2024 that Cook had previously contacted him about Apple’s dispute with the EU. The case involved an order requiring Apple to repay approximately €13 billion—about $14.3 billion at the time—in Irish back taxes. The AP’s account and Reuters-linked reporting provided the context for connecting that dispute to the Cook-Trump relationship.
However, Trump’s account concerned an earlier phone conversation. It does not prove that the EU tax case was the main subject of the December dinner, or that Cook asked Trump to reverse the European Commission’s decision.
Apple’s relationship with the incoming administration
Cook’s dinner also fit a broader effort by technology and business leaders to establish relationships with the incoming administration. AP reported that executives and companies including Meta, Amazon, OpenAI, and Apple were among those making visits, calls, donations, and other overtures to Trump.

For Apple, maintaining direct access could be valuable because presidential policies can affect trade, China relations, manufacturing incentives, antitrust enforcement, technology regulation, and corporate taxes.

Why the meeting mattered
1. Apple faced meaningful policy exposure
Apple was vulnerable to changes in trade policy because tariffs could raise costs or disrupt the company’s global supply chain. A private conversation with the incoming president gave Cook an opportunity to explain Apple’s concerns directly, even though there is no public evidence that Trump agreed to change policy for Apple.
2. Cook already had a direct channel to Trump
The dinner was not an isolated introduction. Cook and Trump had interacted during Trump’s first presidency. In 2019, they appeared together during Trump’s visit to Apple’s Mac Pro manufacturing facility in Austin, Texas. Cook also participated in White House business and workforce-related events, including a workforce-policy meeting documented through Congressional records and Reuters imagery and reporting.
Trump also famously referred to Cook as “Tim Apple” during a 2019 meeting. The episode attracted attention, but the more important point for the 2024 dinner is that the two men had an established, unusually direct business relationship.
3. It showed Big Tech’s political recalibration
Cook was meeting Trump during the transition before the January 2025 inauguration, when corporate leaders were assessing how to work with a returning administration. The dinner illustrated the practical importance of executive access during that period, particularly for companies facing potential regulatory and trade risks.

Access, however, is not the same as influence. A meeting can give an executive a chance to present a company’s position without producing a policy concession.

The available reporting does not establish any of the following:
- A tariff exemption for Apple
- A reversal or settlement of the EU tax decision
- A new Apple manufacturing agreement
- A formal policy commitment from Trump
- A complete list of attendees
- The meal’s timing, duration, menu, or seating arrangement
- A verbatim transcript
- That the EU tax dispute was the principal subject
It is therefore inaccurate to describe the dinner as proof that Cook secured protection for Apple or that Trump promised the company favorable treatment. The strongest defensible conclusion is narrower: the dinner was real, privately held, and politically significant, while its precise substance remained undisclosed.

In January 2025, Axios reported that Cook personally donated $1 million to Trump’s inaugural committee. That was a later development, not evidence that the donation paid for or resulted from an agreement at the December dinner.
Cook and Trump also appeared at later events during Trump’s second term. Those encounters should not be confused with the December 13, 2024 dinner at Mar-a-Lago. In particular, a later 2025 White House dinner involving technology leaders was a separate event, as reflected in Reuters coverage.
How to describe the event accurately
The most precise summary is: Tim Cook met Donald Trump for dinner at Mar-a-Lago on December 13, 2024, while Trump was president-elect. Reuters first reported the meeting as planned, and AP later reported that it occurred. Public reporting identified tariffs, Apple’s supply chain, and the EU tax dispute as relevant context, but did not disclose a detailed agenda or any agreement reached during the dinner.
