Threads passed 400 million monthly active users in August 2025, but that is no longer its latest disclosed audience figure. Meta said on June 16, 2026, that Threads had reached 500 million monthly active users. The distinction matters: both numbers describe monthly activity, not registrations, daily use, or proof that Threads has overtaken X.
What did Threads announce at 400 million?
In August 2025, Instagram head Adam Mosseri said more than 400 million people were active on Threads each month; Mark Zuckerberg also acknowledged the milestone. Contemporary coverage put the figure at about 350 million monthly active users in April 2025, so the 400-million mark represented roughly 50 million additional monthly actives, or about 14.3% growth from that approximate April figure. These are company-reported or contemporaneously reported audience figures, not independently audited counts. Contemporary coverage of the announcement and the April-to-August comparison provide the dated context.
What is the latest Threads user figure?
Meta announced on June 16, 2026, that Threads had reached 500 million monthly active users. That was 100 million more than the 400-million milestone—an increase of about 25% relative to 400 million, based on the two reported figures. The 500-million announcement accompanied product updates including expanded Communities and a feed-control feature called “Your Algo.” Meta’s announcement is the latest figure cited here.
What does “monthly active users” mean?
Monthly active users (MAUs) are people the company counts as using a service during a monthly period. The figure is not interchangeable with other common audience measures:
#1 Best Overall
- Daily active users (DAUs): people active during a day.
- Registered accounts: accounts created, including accounts that may no longer be used.
- Downloads: installations, which do not establish continued use.
- Time spent: an engagement measure, not an audience count.
Meta’s 400-million and 500-million figures are MAUs. They do not disclose how often each person used Threads during the month or how much time they spent there.
How has Threads grown?
Threads launched in July 2023 as Meta’s text-focused social platform. The dated milestones show continued growth, although they do not form a regularly published monthly series:

The figures indicate growth between the reported milestones, but they do not establish a precise month-by-month growth rate or reveal how many users returned regularly.
Why did Threads grow?
No single cause is established by the audience figures. Several factors plausibly contributed, but they should be separated from what Meta has specifically claimed:
Rank #3
- Instagram’s distribution and identity system: Threads benefits from its place in Meta’s ecosystem and the ability for people to join through an existing Instagram identity and connections.
- An opening for an X alternative: Changes at Twitter, now X, created an opportunity for other text-first networks, though the scale of that effect is not isolated by the reported numbers.
- Product development: Meta has added features over time, including custom feeds, web improvements, messaging, longer text attachments, Communities, and controls over recommendations. Its Threads newsroom archive documents product updates.
- Interest-based communities: Meta said Communities was one of Threads’ fastest-growing features and described users gathering around interests such as books, basketball, parenting, and music. That is Meta’s explanation, not an independent causal analysis. Meta’s account
- Engagement improvements: Meta reported that optimizations produced a 20% lift in time spent on Threads in the fourth quarter of 2025. This is a company-reported result, not an independently audited measurement. Meta’s 2026 update
Does 400 million mean Threads surpassed X?
No. The milestone narrowed the perceived gap between Threads and X, but it did not by itself prove that Threads had more users overall. X does not provide a directly comparable, consistently reported public MAU series in the evidence cited here. Third-party estimates may measure mobile daily activity, app usage, web traffic, or other metrics rather than global monthly active users. Comparing those measures as if they were equivalent would be misleading. Coverage of the 400-million milestone also places the figure in the context of the X comparison.
What does the audience milestone mean for creators and publishers?
A larger monthly audience makes Threads more consequential as a venue for public conversation, commentary, culture, news, and community interaction. It may be worth testing for creators and publishers whose readers or peers are active there. But an MAU count does not guarantee that a particular account will reach those people or earn meaningful replies, referrals, subscriptions, or revenue.
Rank #4
- Judge the platform by relevant audience presence and conversation quality, not just its total MAU figure.
- Track outcomes that matter to the work—such as qualified profile visits, referral traffic, sign-ups, or customer conversations.
- Keep durable audience relationships, such as email subscribers or customers, outside any one social platform; algorithmic distribution can change.
What does it mean for advertisers?
Meta expanded Threads advertising globally in 2026 and described managing campaigns through its business tools alongside Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Meta’s announcement included image, video, and carousel placements, as well as Advantage+ catalog and app-install advertising. It also described a gradual rollout, with ad delivery initially at reduced levels as expansion proceeded. These details describe Meta’s offering, not proof of revenue, profitability, or campaign performance. Meta’s advertising update

For a business already using Meta’s ad tools, Threads may be an additional placement to test. A large MAU count alone does not establish incremental reach, conversion quality, or a good return on spend. Advertisers should evaluate their own campaign results, including audience overlap, qualified clicks, conversions, and placement suitability, rather than assume Threads will perform like another Meta platform.

What should readers watch next?
The user total is only one measure of platform health. More revealing signals would include whether Meta continues to disclose audience figures, how daily activity and retention develop, whether communities and creators keep attracting participation, how users respond to advertising, and whether independent measurements show sustained engagement. Until comparable figures are available, claims that Threads has replaced X or become an equivalent advertising channel go beyond what the milestone establishes.
