The OnePlus 13R was arguably the best all-round mid-range phone of 2025 for buyers who valued speed, a large display, fast charging and a useful telephoto camera. But the “$500” price was conditional: its cited $499.99 price followed a $100 trade-in promotion on a phone listed at $599.99. That makes the claim a value verdict for the 2025 U.S. market—not a guarantee that anyone could buy one unlocked for $500.
The Pixel 9a was still the better fit for several buyers, especially people who prioritize point-and-shoot photography, battery endurance, Google software or longer support. Here’s where the OnePlus won, where it didn’t, and how to decide which trade-offs are worth your money.
The $500 price needs an asterisk
PhoneArena reported the OnePlus 13R at a standard price of $599.99, with a $100 trade-in discount that could bring the effective cost to about $499.99. The promotion was described as accepting any phone, in any condition, but trade-in offers can have eligibility rules and expiration dates. The published $500 figure should therefore be understood as a promotional price, not the regular unlocked price. PhoneArena’s May 9, 2025 comparison also noted that the 13R was unavailable from OnePlus’s official store when it was later checked. For a purchase today, confirm stock, the seller, warranty coverage and the actual trade-in terms rather than relying on that historical deal. OnePlus’s U.S. product page is the place to check official product information.
That caveat matters to value. At roughly $500 after a trade-in, the 13R’s combination of flagship-class processing, a telephoto camera and 80W charging was unusually compelling. At $599.99—or if it cannot be found from a reliable seller—the comparison with the Pixel 9a and other mid-range phones becomes less straightforward.

Why the OnePlus 13R won the overall-value argument
The OnePlus 13R is not the OnePlus 13 flagship. It is a less expensive model powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, paired with a 6.78-inch display and a 6,000mAh battery. In PhoneArena’s 2025 comparison, the case for it was not that it won every category; it was that it delivered a particularly strong mix of performance, screen quality, charging speed and camera flexibility at the promotional price.
Performance built for demanding use
PhoneArena’s Geekbench 6 tests recorded the 13R at 2,218 single-core and 6,714 multi-core, versus 1,687 and 4,385 for the Pixel 9a. In those results, the OnePlus was roughly 30% ahead in single-core and 50% ahead in multi-core performance. It also led the Galaxy A56 5G and Nothing Phone (3a) Pro in the cited CPU comparisons.
In practical terms, that performance headroom can help with demanding games, heavy multitasking and keeping resource-intensive apps responsive. It does not mean every app will open 30% or 50% faster: benchmark scores are controlled measurements, not a stopwatch for every everyday task.

PhoneArena reported a 3DMark Wild Life Extreme high score of 4,748 for the OnePlus 13R, compared with 2,625 for the Pixel 9a, 3,017 for the iPhone 16e, 1,322 for the Galaxy A56 5G and 1,060 for the Nothing Phone (3a) Pro. That supports the OnePlus as the strongest pick here for graphics-heavy gaming. A benchmark alone does not prove better sustained frame rates, cooler operation or lower battery drain in every game, however.
A large, sharp AMOLED screen
The 13R’s 6.78-inch ProXDR AMOLED display has a 2,800 × 1,260 resolution, giving it plenty of room for video, games and split-screen use. In PhoneArena’s measurements, peak brightness was 2,384 nits—high, but below the Pixel 9a’s 2,561 nits. The OnePlus was brighter than the Galaxy A56 5G (1,715 nits), Nothing Phone (3a) Pro (1,408 nits) and iPhone 16e (about 791 nits) in the cited test.
The OnePlus also recorded a grayscale Delta E of 3.82 in the cited CalMAN testing using Portrait Displays software; lower values generally indicate less grayscale color error. The Pixel 9a scored 5.76, the Nothing Phone (3a) Pro 4.25, the iPhone 16e 5.32 and the Galaxy A56 5G 7.4. These results suggest a strong display, not a universal screen victory: the Pixel measured brighter, and display preference also depends on factors that a single measurement cannot capture.
The camera choice: zoom flexibility or Pixel processing?
The OnePlus’s clearest hardware advantage is its 50MP telephoto camera. Having a dedicated telephoto lens gives you a more useful option for portraits and zoom shots than relying only on digital cropping. PhoneArena’s overall camera scores put the OnePlus 13R narrowly first at 138, followed by Nothing Phone (3a) Pro at 135 and Pixel 9a at 134. The OnePlus scored 153 for photos and 124 for video; the Pixel scored 143 and 126, respectively.

Those aggregate scores do not make the OnePlus the safer camera choice for everyone. The Pixel 9a remains a strong option for computational photography and point-and-shoot consistency, and its video score was slightly higher in the cited comparison. The 13R’s 8MP ultrawide was a notable weak point, with oversaturated colors reported, and video stabilization was another compromise.
Choose the OnePlus for the more versatile camera hardware and optical zoom; choose the Pixel if reliable processing matters more than having a telephoto lens. If most of your pictures are casual shots of people, pets or dim indoor scenes, the Pixel’s processing may be more valuable to you than the OnePlus’s extra camera flexibility.
Battery endurance versus charging speed
The 13R’s 6,000mAh battery sounds enormous, but capacity is not the same thing as time between charges. In PhoneArena’s estimated battery-life test, the Pixel 9a lasted 8 hours 11 minutes, ahead of the OnePlus 13R at 7 hours 22 minutes. The Nothing Phone (3a) Pro reached 7 hours 15 minutes, the Galaxy A56 5G 7 hours 3 minutes, and the iPhone 16e 6 hours 4 minutes. These are results from one test methodology, not a promise of how long your own phone will last.
Where the OnePlus pulled ahead was wired charging. PhoneArena recorded a full charge in 56 minutes for the 13R, compared with 1 hour 42 minutes for the Pixel 9a, 1 hour 15 minutes for the Galaxy A56 5G and 1 hour 41 minutes for the iPhone 16e. The Nothing Phone (3a) Pro also reached a full charge in 56 minutes. The 13R supports 80W wired charging; actual results depend on charging conditions and compatible equipment.

OxygenOS and support: good, but not the longest promise
The 13R launched with OxygenOS 15. PhoneArena highlighted features such as Task Prediction, real-time translation, gaming tools and Parallel Processing, alongside customization and performance options. Whether that interface feels better than Pixel software is a matter of preference: users who want a Google-centered experience may favor the Pixel’s software and AI features instead.
At the time of the comparison, OnePlus’s cited support promise was four years of Android updates and six years of security patches. PhoneArena described Google’s Pixel 9a support as longer and Samsung’s Galaxy A56 5G policy as comparable to OnePlus’s. Update policies can change, and the timing or availability of updates and features may vary by market. Check the manufacturer’s current policy for the exact model and region before purchasing, especially if you expect to keep a phone for many years.

The 13R makes the strongest case for a buyer who plays demanding games, multitasks heavily, wants a large high-resolution screen, values quick wired charging, or wants optical zoom without paying flagship money. It was arguably the best overall mid-range value in the 2025 comparison if the trade-in brought the price to roughly $500 and the buyer was comfortable without wireless charging.
Choose the Pixel 9a instead if your priorities are computational photography, the best battery-life result in the cited test, Google’s software or longer support. The right choice is not the phone that wins the most headline specifications; it is the one whose advantages address the things you will notice every day.
