The available evidence confirms Apple’s M5 positioning but does not provide an independent M4-versus-M5 benchmark. Do not pay a large premium solely on an assumed speed difference. The practical questions are condition, warranty, configuration, software-support horizon and the size of the price gap.
Why the 16GB/512GB configuration matters
Memory
For most students, 16GB is the sensible baseline for browsers, documents, coding tools and multitasking. More memory is easier to justify for containers or virtual machines, video editing, 3D or CAD work, scientific applications and unusually large creative projects. 256GB works for web apps, documents, cloud storage and light media use, but can become restrictive with games, video, photo libraries, virtual machines, local datasets or large development environments. 512GB is the safer four-year choice for many technical and creative students. Cloud storage and an external SSD can relieve pressure, but add cost and inconvenience. The Best Buy search results include unlike 256GB and 512GB models, so compare identical capacities.

13-inch or 15-inch?
- 13-inch: lighter and easier to carry between classes; the better default for students who commute.
- 15-inch: more workspace for split-screen documents, spreadsheets, coding and creative applications, but generally less portable and more expensive.
Separate 13-inch and 15-inch listings have different prices and savings. A 15-inch markdown is not interchangeable with the 13-inch $1,049 configuration.
What refurbished means
Apple Certified Refurbished
Apple says its certified refurbished products undergo a refurbishment process, include a one-year limited warranty, allow 14-day returns and may be eligible for AppleCare, subject to availability. Retailer-refurbished or open-box
“Refurbished Excellent,” open-box and marketplace inventory can have different inspection standards, battery condition, accessories, warranty coverage and return windows. Read the individual offer rather than relying on the search-results headline.

Who should buy the M4 deal?
General students
Buy if the exact 16GB/512GB unit is available at $1,049, the condition and warranty are acceptable, and an equivalent M5 costs materially more.
