The $499 Mac mini deal was real—but it was a historical promotion, not a price that should automatically be treated as current. On September 26, 2025, Amazon offered Apple’s M4 Mac mini with 16GB of unified memory and a 256GB SSD for $499, or $100 below its then-$599 list price. That was an excellent price for a new Mac mini, although the available evidence does not prove it was the lowest price ever.
Before buying a similarly advertised listing, verify the exact configuration, condition, seller, warranty, and checkout price. The 256GB SSD is the main compromise, and Apple reportedly later removed that configuration from its standard U.S. lineup.

The original deal was reported by Macworld. A $100 reduction from $599 works out to roughly 16.7% off.
Because that report is dated, readers should not assume the same offer remains available. The historical Amazon listing was this product page, but retailer inventory, sellers, conditions, and prices can change. If a listing now shows $499, check that it is new—not renewed or used—and that it has the expected Apple warranty and return terms.

Was $499 really the lowest price ever?
Not conclusively. Macworld described $499 as one of the lowest prices it had seen. A later MacRumors deal report referred to $499 as the second-best price for the configuration, which indicates that at least one lower historical price may have occurred.
That distinction matters. “Lowest price ever” requires comprehensive price-history evidence. The available reporting supports calling $499 an unusually strong historical price, not a verified all-time record.
There is also a pricing complication. Apple reportedly raised the advertised starting price to $799 for the M4 Mac mini with 16GB memory and 512GB storage after removing the 256GB option from its U.S. lineup in May 2026. However, an Apple store page has continued to expose a 256GB configuration link. Availability should therefore be treated as retailer- and inventory-dependent until confirmed at checkout.

Apple introduced this redesigned Mac mini on October 29, 2024, with availability beginning November 8 and a $599 starting price for a 16GB model. Apple positions it for everyday productivity, creative work, music production, video editing, and coding; those are Apple’s product claims rather than independent benchmark conclusions. The 256GB SSD is the real catch
The base Mac mini’s processor is not the reason to hesitate. Storage is. macOS and system data use part of the advertised capacity, leaving less room for applications, photos, games, video projects, music libraries, and local AI models.
Internal storage should be treated as fixed at purchase. An external USB-C or Thunderbolt SSD is the normal workaround, but it adds cost, desk clutter, cables, and a separate backup decision. The 256GB version makes the most sense when you already own external storage, use cloud storage heavily, or mainly run browser, office, coding, and streaming apps.

Who should buy the base model?
Buy it when all of the following are true:
- The exact unit is new and sold by a reputable seller.
- The $499 price is still available at checkout.
- You already own a monitor, keyboard, and mouse or trackpad.
- Your work is mainly web, office, school, conferencing, coding, photo editing, music, streaming, or light-to-moderate video editing.
- You have external or cloud storage for files that will not fit comfortably on the internal drive.
The M4 Mac mini can also handle multiple everyday applications simultaneously. It is less suitable for large professional video projects, heavy 3D rendering, high-end gaming, extensive virtual machines, or large local AI workloads.
When the upgrades make more financial sense

MacRumors reported historical January 2026 sale prices of $689 for the 16GB/512GB model, $889.99 for the 24GB/512GB version, and $1,269 for the 24GB/512GB M4 Pro. Those figures are historical reference points, not confirmed current prices.
Choose 24GB memory if you regularly run virtual machines, large development environments, demanding creative applications, or larger datasets. Choose the M4 Pro if your workload consistently needs substantially more CPU or GPU performance or requires Thunderbolt 5. Do not pay for either upgrade merely for ordinary browsing and office work.

The box does not include a display, keyboard, mouse, trackpad, or webcam. It does include the computer and its power connection, but a buyer starting from nothing may spend considerably more than $499 before having a usable workstation.

That is where the deal’s personal-finance value depends on what you already own. Existing PC monitors and USB peripherals can make the Mac mini an inexpensive switch to macOS. Buying Apple’s premium accessories and a Studio Display can erase much of the savings. Apple describes the Mac mini as compatible with existing displays and accessories in its launch announcement.
Is Apple Certified Refurbished better?
Not if a genuinely new unit is available for $499 from a trustworthy seller. But Apple Certified Refurbished can be preferable to an uncertain marketplace listing or used computer.
Apple’s refurbished page listed an M4 Mac mini with 16GB memory and 256GB SSD at $679, reduced from $799, when captured. Apple says its certified refurbished products receive functionality testing and include a one-year limited warranty, 14-day returns, and AppleCare eligibility. Checklist before ordering
- Confirm the chip is M4, not a different Mac mini generation.
- Confirm 16GB memory and 256GB SSD—or the storage tier you intended.
- Check whether the product is new, renewed, open-box, or used.
- Verify the seller, fulfillment method, return policy, and warranty.
- Check the final checkout price, including any coupon or membership requirement.
- Confirm delivery region and estimated arrival date.
- Budget separately for a monitor, input devices, webcam, and external storage if needed.
Be especially cautious with imported listings, unfamiliar marketplace sellers, and offers where the configuration changes after clicking through. A lower price can reflect clearance inventory, third-party stock, a renewed product, or a listing that is no longer available.
Bottom line
The M4 Mac mini at $499 was an excellent historical deal for a new 16GB/256GB desktop. It was not conclusively the lowest price ever, and the deal should not be presented as a current August or September 2026 offer without checking the live retailer listing. Buy the base model only if you can verify the price and seller and are comfortable adding external storage. For a primary computer intended to last several years, the 512GB model is usually the better value.
