The deal was real, but it was time-limited. Best Buy’s February 2026 Presidents’ Day promotion cut the 128GB unlocked Google Pixel 9a from its $499 launch price to $349, with no trade-in stated. A separate $249 price required activation through Verizon or AT&T.
That promotion was reported on February 9, 2026. It should not be treated as a current offer: the Best Buy listing later observed on August 18, 2026 showed a $399.99 clearance price but was marked unavailable.

The important distinction is that $349 was the unlocked price. The $249 figure was a carrier-activation price, not a generally available unlocked price. See the original deal report and Best Buy listing for the documented terms and later availability.

Why the Pixel 9a was such a strong budget-phone pick
The Pixel 9a’s appeal was not maximum benchmark performance. It was the combination of a good camera system, long software support, a bright high-refresh-rate display, wireless charging, and Google’s clean Android experience at a relatively low price.

Google’s specifications are available through its Pixel 9a launch announcement and technical specifications page. The advertised “30-plus-hour” battery claim is based on Google’s testing methodology, so real-world endurance varies.
Independent testing shows the trade-offs
Tom’s Guide measured the Pixel 9a at 2,076 nits, below Google’s 2,700-nit specification but still exceptionally bright for this class. Its battery test lasted 13 hours and 8 minutes, beating the iPhone 16e in that comparison but trailing the Nothing Phone 3a Pro.

The Tensor G4 is capable for routine use, but it is not a performance leader. Tom’s Guide found substantial gaps between the Pixel 9a and the iPhone 16e’s A18 chip in Geekbench and video-transcoding tests. That matters more to demanding gamers and video creators than to shoppers who mainly browse, message, photograph, and stream.

The Pixel 9a has an ultrawide camera but no dedicated telephoto lens, so distant subjects will not match the results from a more expensive phone with optical zoom. It also charges more slowly than some competing Android phones.

Tom’s Guide’s independent review also noted that some premium AI features were unavailable and that Gemini Advanced access in its review context was limited. Do not treat Google’s “best camera under $500” language as an independent test result.
Who should buy it—and who should wait?
Buy the Pixel 9a when
- You can find the unlocked 128GB model near $349 or less.
- You want strong point-and-shoot photography and an ultrawide camera.
- Seven years of software and security support matter.
- You prefer Google’s Android software and call-screening tools.
- You want wireless charging in an affordable phone.
Reconsider it when
- You need top-tier gaming, graphics, or video-rendering performance.
- You want a telephoto camera.
- Fast wired charging is a priority.
- You need more than 128GB for games, video, or offline media; storage is not expandable.
- A newer Pixel A-series phone is available for a similar effective price.
- The only available unit is clearance stock or is unavailable.
Be careful with the $249 carrier price
If a carrier advertises the Pixel 9a for $249, compare the phone price with the full cost of service. Check for activation fees, required plans, installment obligations, carrier-lock rules, payoff requirements, and the effect of canceling a line on promotional credits.
A carrier deal can make sense if you already use Verizon or AT&T and intend to keep the required service. It is usually a poor fit if you only want a cheap unlocked phone. The unlocked February offer was the cleaner comparison because it did not require a stated trade-in or carrier activation.
What the February deal means now
The original promotion is best understood as a historical deal report, not a live buying recommendation. The later Best Buy page showed the unlocked Obsidian model at $399.99 and labeled it clearance, but also showed it as unavailable when crawled. Do not assume that page represents active inventory or that the $349 Presidents’ Day price can still be claimed.
Before buying, compare the current price of the Pixel 9a with newer Pixel A-series models and competing phones. The 9a remains most compelling when it is meaningfully cheaper and available new, unlocked, and with a normal return policy. If the price gap is small, the newer model may offer better long-term value.
Also remember that an IP68 rating is not a guarantee that the phone is waterproof. Google says water resistance can diminish through wear, damage, repairs, disassembly, or drops, and water damage is not automatically covered.
