Quick verdict: The $399 Galaxy S25 Ultra offer was a real Samsung U.S. pre-order promotion in early 2025, but it was not a standalone retail price. It required an eligible trade-in and promotional credits, and the free Galaxy Buds 3 Pro depended on the purchase configuration. The offer expired after the pre-order period and is not verified as active as of August 18, 2026.
How the $399 Galaxy S25 Ultra deal worked
Contemporaneous coverage reported that Samsung could reduce the Galaxy S25 Ultra to as low as $399 when shoppers traded in an eligible premium phone. Reported qualifying devices included the Galaxy S24 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 6, with trade-in promotions advertised at up to $900 for certain devices. That maximum did not apply automatically to every phone or every condition.
The deal was promoted alongside a free pair of Galaxy Buds 3 Pro. Shoppers generally had to:
- Open Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Ultra pre-order page.
- Select a storage configuration.
- Choose an eligible trade-in device.
- Apply the displayed trade-in credit.
- Open the Start building healthy habits with Galaxy section.
- Add the Galaxy Buds 3 Pro and confirm that the promotional credit appeared in the cart.
The final cart—not an old headline—was the authoritative test of eligibility.

The $399 figure was not the total economic cost
A headline price after credits can obscure what the upgrade actually costs. The relevant calculation was:
Phone retail price
− Samsung promotional discount or credit
− eligible trade-in credit
+ taxes and any applicable charges
= checkout balanceThe calculation also excludes the value of the phone surrendered in the trade-in. A shopper giving up a relatively new foldable or flagship may receive a low cash balance while still making an expensive economic trade.
Taxes may be calculated using the transaction’s pre-credit amount, depending on the jurisdiction and purchase structure. Carrier offers can add financing, activation requirements or monthly bill credits. A carrier’s “$399” or “free” phone is therefore not necessarily an immediate $399 unlocked purchase.

256GB versus 512GB: why the reports conflicted
The original deal coverage did not describe the storage rules consistently. An initial report described the 256GB model reaching the promotional price with free Buds 3 Pro, while describing the 512GB version as costing $20 more in one account. A later update reported that the 512GB model could also reach $399 with free Buds during the remaining pre-order period.
Those reports should not be treated as proof that every storage configuration always qualified. Promotions could change during the pre-order window, so shoppers needed to verify the storage tier, accessory credit and final balance in Samsung’s checkout flow.
When did the promotion expire?
The offer was tied to Samsung’s 2025 pre-order period. Contemporary coverage reported that the relevant incentives were scheduled to end on February 7, 2025, when the Galaxy S25 series went on sale.

Status checked August 18, 2026: Samsung’s current U.S. pages do not show the original $399-with-free-Buds-3-Pro pre-order offer. Samsung lists the unlocked Galaxy S25 Ultra at $1,299.99 for 256GB and $1,419.99 for 512GB, with current trade-in savings shown separately.
Current trade-in and carrier offers are different
Samsung’s current unlocked product page showed trade-in savings of up to $570, subject to the device, condition and active offer. That is different from the enhanced launch-period promotion reported at up to $900.
Carrier pages can show different numbers. For example, Samsung’s T-Mobile listing displayed a 512GB price of $1,119.99 and up to $900 in carrier trade-in bill credits. Such credits typically depend on an eligible plan and continued service over the promotional term. They are not evidence that the unlocked phone currently costs $399 at checkout.

Trade-in risks to check before ordering
Samsung’s trade-in terms state that the device generally must be shipped within 15 days of receiving the qualifying purchase. Samsung may reverse the applied credit if the phone is late or fails its eligibility inspection. Only one trade-in is generally permitted per qualifying purchase, and eligible models and values can change.
- Photograph the phone, including its screen and edges, before shipping.
- Back up your data and perform a factory reset.
- Remove accounts, passwords, SIM cards and activation locks.
- Confirm the exact condition requirements shown at checkout.
- Keep the shipping receipt and tracking number.
- Do not assume Samsung’s offer can be combined with another Samsung, carrier or retailer promotion unless the terms specifically allow it.
A cracked, locked, financed or materially damaged device may receive less credit or fail inspection. If the trade-in is rejected, the original $399 calculation can disappear.
Was the deal worthwhile?
The promotion could be attractive for someone with a high-value eligible Samsung trade-in who wanted the S25 Ultra and would otherwise buy Galaxy Buds 3 Pro. Enhanced launch-period credits can make Samsung’s direct trade-in route competitive with selling privately, while avoiding the work and risk of listing a phone.

It was less compelling for buyers with a low-value device, people who could sell their phone for substantially more privately, and owners of newer foldables who did not want to give up a valuable handset. It was also a poor fit for anyone seeking a genuinely inexpensive phone rather than a subsidized flagship upgrade.
Before accepting a similar offer
Use this checklist whenever a Samsung deal advertises an unusually low price:
- Check whether the advertised amount says “with trade-in” or “after bill credits.”
- Compare Samsung’s trade-in value with the realistic private-sale value of your phone.
- Confirm whether the phone is unlocked or tied to a carrier plan.
- Verify the storage tier and whether the Buds 3 Pro appear in the cart at no charge.
- Calculate taxes, financing, activation fees and any required plan cost.
- Read the return and trade-in inspection terms before sending your device.
The S25 Ultra remains a flagship option with features such as the S Pen, high-end cameras and a premium display. But the original promotion should be understood as a time-limited, trade-in-dependent launch offer—not as evidence that Samsung’s phone normally sells for $399.
