Disney+ no longer generally permits account sharing with people who live outside the account holder’s Household in the United States. If someone at another address needs access, the authorized option is an Extra Member add-on on an eligible plan—or that person can open a separate Disney+ subscription.
The added cost is $6.99 per month for an Extra Member on Disney+ With Ads and $9.99 per month on Disney+ Premium. Eligible bundles cost between $7.99 and $14.99 per month for the add-on. Those charges are added to the existing subscription; Disney does not automatically charge every person who has used a shared password.
How much does Disney+ Extra Member cost?
These are Disney’s listed U.S. monthly prices for the Extra Member add-on:

These are add-on prices, not replacement subscription prices. The account holder is billed for the Extra Member. Disney notes that prices and controls can differ for customers billed through an app store, cable company, mobile carrier, or another third party. Check the billing source before changing or canceling the plan. Disney’s pricing page is the best place to verify the current amount.

What is the total monthly cost?
For common U.S. plans, the base subscription plus one Extra Member works out as follows:

These totals are simple arithmetic using Disney’s listed monthly prices. Taxes and third-party billing differences may apply. Disney also lists standalone U.S. plans at $11.99 per month for Disney+ With Ads and $18.99 per month for Disney+ Premium. The Premium annual plan is listed at $189.99 per year.
What Disney means by “Household”
Disney’s current Subscriber Agreement defines a Household as the collection of devices associated with the subscriber’s primary personal residence and used by the people who live there. Disney says it may examine subscription activity, linked devices, internet connections, and other information to determine whether an account is being used within the Household.
That means the restriction is aimed at regular access by people living at another address—not ordinary use by several people in the same home. Disney’s agreement says an account generally cannot be shared outside the Household unless the plan or an add-on permits it. Disney may limit or terminate access if it determines that the terms have been violated.
This is not an announcement that every shared account will be shut down on a particular date. Disney’s published language gives it discretion to analyze usage and enforce the agreement; it does not promise a universal warning schedule or an automatic charge for every password-sharing situation.

Who is likely to be affected?
- A family living together: People using Disney+ at the same primary residence are generally within the Household.
- A friend in another apartment: Regular access from another address is the type of use that may require an Extra Member or a separate subscription.
- A relative in another city or state: The same Household question applies, regardless of whether the person is related.
- A former roommate: Continued access after moving out may fall outside the Household.
- A couple with separate homes: A relationship does not by itself make two residences one Household.
- A college student: Disney’s published definition centers on people who live at the primary residence. A student permanently living elsewhere may need an Extra Member seat or an independent account, while temporary travel should be handled through Disney’s travel process.
- Travel or a vacation home: A second location is not automatically proof of a violation. Disney separately provides an “I’M AWAY FROM HOME” process for temporary access away from home.
College students, second homes, and frequent travelers are practical edge cases rather than categories with a guaranteed exemption. Disney’s terms and the prompts shown on an account should control the response.
Extra Member is not ordinary password sharing
An Extra Member is a paid seat attached to the main subscription. It is not permission to keep distributing the account holder’s email address and password.

- A separate email-based login and password.
- One profile.
- Personalized watch history and recommendations.
- Access to the same content and features as the account holder, subject to the plan.
- The same video and audio quality as the account holder.
- Streaming or downloading on one device at a time.
That last limitation matters. An Extra Member is not a second full subscription with multiple profiles and unlimited simultaneous use. Disney allows only one Extra Member per Disney+ or eligible bundle subscription.
Who can be an Extra Member?
According to Disney’s Help Center, the invited person must:
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Live in the same country or region as the account holder.
- Not already have an active Disney+, Hulu, or ESPN subscription.
The account holder pays for the add-on. If the invited user already maintains one of those active subscriptions, a separate account may be the simpler option.

- Double check if the URL/website is genuine before entering card details online. Do not provide any gift card details (example: claim code) to someone you do not know or trust. There are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
- If you believe that your Card has been lost or stolen, notify Mastercard immediately by calling 1-833-791-7288. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
- Use your Mastercard Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Mastercard debit cards are accepted, including online. Your Amazon.com Balance cannot be used to purchase Mastercard gift cards.
Which plans do not support Extra Member?
Extra Member is not currently available with several Disney bundle configurations, including:
- Disney+, Hulu, ESPN Unlimited Bundle.
- Disney+, Hulu, ESPN Unlimited Bundle Premium.
- Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max Bundle plans.
- Bundle plans with NFL+ Premium.
If you switch to an ineligible plan, Disney says the Extra Member add-on will be removed. Check eligibility before upgrading or changing bundles—especially if the ability to support an out-of-home user is the reason you are paying for the current plan.

On the ad-supported plan, a standalone Disney+ account costs $5 more per month than the $6.99 Extra Member fee. On Premium, the difference is $9 per month. The extra cost buys the separate subscriber control over billing and cancellation, rather than access that depends on another person’s account.
Choose Extra Member if:
- Only one person outside the Household needs access.
- That person lives in the same country or region.
- The account holder wants to keep centralized billing.
- The invited person does not already have an active Disney+, Hulu, or ESPN subscription.
- The current plan is eligible.
Choose a separate subscription if:
- More than one person at the other address needs access.
- The user needs multiple profiles.
- The user wants to control billing, cancellation, and plan changes.
- The user already has an active Disney+, Hulu, or ESPN subscription.
- The account is on a bundle that does not support Extra Member.
- The account holder may cancel, move, or switch to an ineligible bundle.
Choose cancellation if:
The added cost is greater than the value of the service, the account was mainly maintained for someone outside the Household, or the subscription is no longer used enough to justify its price.
How to add an Extra Member
Disney’s Help Center directs the account holder to use a mobile or web browser, sign in at DisneyPlus.com, and use the account-management or Extra Member flow. The invited person then uses their own email address and creates a password.

Because menu labels can vary by account and can change over time, use the Extra Member option shown in the account page rather than relying on an old step-by-step menu path. If the option does not appear, check the plan’s eligibility, billing source, country or region, and whether an Extra Member is already attached to the subscription.

If you are traveling temporarily
Choose “I’M AWAY FROM HOME” when that option appears and follow Disney’s verification instructions. The exact prompt and verification method can vary by device, app version, and account state.
If you recently moved
Choose “UPDATE HOUSEHOLD” if available and follow the prompts to reset the primary Household location. A permanent move should not be treated as repeated short-term travel.
If the warning continues
- Confirm that the account’s primary residence is correctly identified.
- Review connected devices and account activity for unfamiliar access.
- Sign out unknown devices where Disney provides that control.
- Change the account password if someone else may still have the credentials.
- Contact Disney support if a legitimate Household cannot be restored.
Do not treat a VPN, credential resale, or another location-obscuring workaround as authorized access. Those approaches do not create an Extra Member seat and may conflict with Disney’s account terms.
Watch for billing mistakes
Removing or replacing the invited person is not necessarily the same as canceling the Extra Member add-on. Disney says the add-on charge continues if the individual Extra Member is removed or replaced without canceling the add-on itself.

To stop the recurring charge, remove the Extra Member add-on from the account-management flow. Disney says the change takes effect at the end of the current Extra Member monthly billing period. The former Extra Member then loses access but can open an independent subscription using their own login and billing details.
Also remember that switching plans can remove the add-on. If you move to an ineligible bundle, verify what happens to both the Extra Member access and the recurring charge before confirming the change.
Why this is not a brand-new August 2026 policy
Disney publicly expanded its paid-sharing program in 2024 across the United States, Canada, Latin America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific markets. The current issue for U.S. subscribers is the ongoing cost and operation of the system—not a newly announced universal cutoff in August 2026.
