YNAB was the strongest choice in the original 2021 comparison for people who wanted a real, zero-based budget. But the best iPhone budgeting app depended on the job: Goodbudget suited envelope budgeting and shared finances, PocketGuard emphasized automated “safe to spend” guidance, EveryDollar followed a straightforward zero-based method, and spreadsheets offered maximum control without requiring a bank connection.

This is a historical comparison of the list published on April 30, 2021. Several products, prices, bank connections, and free tiers have changed since then. Most importantly, Mint should not be treated as a current recommendation.

Quick recommendations

Best for App or approach Why it stands out
Intentional, zero-based budgeting YNAB Assigns available money to specific categories and goals.
Envelope budgeting Goodbudget Recreates physical envelopes digitally and supports shared budgets.
Ramsey-style budgeting EveryDollar Uses a simple monthly zero-based structure.
Automated spending guidance PocketGuard Estimates what is available after bills, goals, and necessities.
Maximum flexibility and no bank connection Excel, Numbers, or Google Sheets Customizable, transparent, and portable.
Shared budgets without strict envelopes Spendee Offers shared wallet and budgeting features.
Broader financial dashboards Monarch Money or Quicken Simplifi Combines budgeting with account aggregation and wider financial tracking.

These are editorial fits, not universal rankings. A tracker that automatically imports transactions is solving a different problem from an app that asks you to plan every dollar before spending it.

How to choose an iPhone budgeting app

Start with the method rather than the brand:

  • You want to plan spending in advance: Choose a zero-based or envelope system such as YNAB, EveryDollar, or Goodbudget.
  • You mainly want an account dashboard: Consider PocketGuard, Quicken Simplifi, or Monarch Money.
  • You do not want to connect financial accounts: Use manual entry in a budgeting app or build a spreadsheet.
  • You budget with a partner: Look for official household sharing rather than sharing one password.
  • Your income changes monthly: Favor flexible targets, buffer categories, carryover balances, and manual forecasting.

Before subscribing, check the current App Store listing, supported institutions, region availability, iOS compatibility, export tools, account-deletion process, and the difference between a free plan and a free trial.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

1. YNAB: best for proactive zero-based budgeting

YNAB is the clearest choice for readers who want a budgeting system rather than a passive spending report. Its method is to give every dollar a job: available money is assigned to bills, everyday categories, savings goals, and debt priorities.

You can enter transactions manually or use bank imports where supported. YNAB provides web and mobile access, goals, debt-planning features, and household sharing under one subscription. Its direct-import coverage is limited to select banks in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the European Union, so readers outside those areas should not assume that synchronization will work.

The pricing page observed in August 2026 listed $14.99 per month or $109 per year, with a 34-day trial. Prices can change, so confirm the live offer at YNAB’s official pricing page. The subscription is a meaningful trade-off: YNAB requires active participation, regular categorization, and reconciliation. It can feel excessive if you only want a balance dashboard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

YNAB publishes company-reported savings and survey results. Those figures are not independent proof that every user will save money. The more defensible reason to choose YNAB is its method: it makes future spending decisions visible before the money disappears.

Skip it if: You want a completely hands-off tracker, do not want a subscription, or will not maintain categories and reconcile imported transactions.

2. Goodbudget: best for digital envelopes and shared budgets

Goodbudget translates the envelope method into an iPhone app. You divide available money among spending envelopes such as groceries, transport, entertainment, annual bills, and gifts, then spend from those balances.

It is useful for couples, roommates, and families who want a shared budget without connecting their bank accounts. The method is easy to explain and can encourage deliberate decisions: if the grocery envelope is empty, the household must either stop spending or consciously move money from another envelope.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The downside is manual work. Entering transactions can become burdensome, and fixed envelopes may be awkward for freelancers or people whose income varies substantially. Free and paid plans have different limits and synchronization features, so check the current Goodbudget product information before choosing a plan.

Rank #2
Apple iPhone 16, 128GB, Pink - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • 6.1" Super Retina XDR OLED, HDR10, Dolby Vision, 1000nits (typ), 2000nits (HBM), 2556x1179px at 460ppi, 3561mAh Battery
  • 128GB 8GB RAM, Apple A18 (3nm), Hexa-core (2x4.04 GHz + 4x2.20 GHz), Apple GPU 5-core, 16‑core Neural Engine
  • Rear camera: 48MP, f/1.6, wide + 12MP, f/2.2, ultrawide, Front Camera: 12MP, f/1.9, wide, iOS 18, upgradable to iOS 18.5

  • Unlocked for freedom to choose your carrier. Compatible with both GSM & CDMA networks. The phone is unlocked to work with all GSM Carriers & CDMA Carriers Including AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint., Etc.

Skip it if: You expect automatic categorization or want a detailed investment and net-worth dashboard.

3. EveryDollar: best for a simple Ramsey-style budget

EveryDollar is designed around a straightforward monthly zero-based budget. You list income, assign it to expenses and priorities, and work toward a zero remaining balance.

It is a natural fit for readers already following the Ramsey budgeting approach or anyone who wants less complexity than a full personal-finance dashboard. Manual budgeting is available, while premium functionality has historically added bank synchronization and other features. The free and paid versions should be compared carefully using the current EveryDollar premium information page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

EveryDollar may feel restrictive if you want predictive cash-flow modeling, extensive investment tracking, or a highly customized system. International availability and mobile-feature parity also need to be checked for your location.

4. PocketGuard: best for a simplified “safe to spend” view

PocketGuard is aimed at readers who want an answer to a practical question: after bills, goals, and necessities, how much money is available to spend?

Its automated account aggregation and recurring-bill visibility can be easier for beginners than maintaining a detailed zero-based budget. That simplicity is also the risk. The calculated allowance is only as accurate as the connected accounts, transaction categories, bills, goals, and timing data behind it.

A delayed transaction, duplicate charge, missing cash purchase, or incorrect category can make the number misleading. Treat the result as guidance, not an authoritative balance. Review imported transactions and confirm upcoming bills before making a major spending decision. Check current tiers and limits at PocketGuard’s pricing page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Skip it if: You need granular category planning, complex irregular-income support, or strict envelope budgeting.

Rank #3
Apple iPhone 15, 128GB, Black - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • 6.1inch Super Retina XDR display. Aluminum with color-infused glass back. Ring/Silent switch
  • Dynamic Island. A magical way to interact with iPhone. A16 Bionic chip with 5-core GPU
  • Advanced dual-camera system. 48MP Main | Ultra Wide. Super-high-resolution photos (24MP and 48MP). Next-generation portraits with Focus and Depth Control. 4X optical zoom range
  • Emergency SOS via satellite. Crash Detection. Roadside Assistance via satellite
  • Up to 26 hours video playback. USB C, Supports USB 2. Face ID

5. Spendee: best for shared budgets outside a strict envelope system

Spendee is a reasonable alternative for households that want shared budgets and wallet-style tracking but do not want to adopt Goodbudget’s envelope method. It supports multiple wallet and budget concepts, with premium features and bank synchronization depending on plan and region.

Its historical 2021 price—$2.99 per month after a one-week trial—should not be reused as current pricing. Confirm the live plans at Spendee’s official pricing page.

Skip it if: You need a highly prescriptive zero-based method or require bank support that has not been confirmed for your institution and country.

6. Excel, Apple Numbers, and Google Sheets: best for control and privacy

A spreadsheet can be the best iPhone budgeting tool for someone who values transparency and customization over automation. It does not require you to give a budgeting service access to financial accounts, and you can design categories for unusual household arrangements, sinking funds, debt schedules, or irregular income.

A useful budget can include these columns or sections:

  • Income received
  • Fixed bills
  • Variable expenses
  • Sinking funds for annual or irregular costs
  • Debt payments
  • Savings contributions
  • Actual spending
  • Remaining balance

Excel, Numbers, and Google Sheets differ in sharing, formulas, offline behavior, platform support, and subscription requirements. Excel may require Microsoft 365 depending on the plan; Google Sheets has free consumer access with additional capabilities tied to Google Workspace; Numbers is designed for Apple devices. Confirm current terms from Microsoft, Apple, and Google.

The trade-off is that you must build and maintain the workflow yourself. A spreadsheet also will not automatically solve duplicate transactions, credit-card transfers, or cash spending unless you design rules for them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Quicken and Quicken Simplifi: best for broader financial management

The 2021 list included Quicken as a more comprehensive accounting and asset-management product. That is different from Quicken Simplifi, the cloud-based product positioned around spending, cash flow, and predictive budgeting.

Rank #4
Apple iPhone 13, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
  • There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
  • This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.
  • Product may come in generic Box.

Readers who want investments, assets, net worth, and broader financial records may prefer the Quicken ecosystem. Those who want a simpler automated dashboard should examine Simplifi separately. They are not interchangeable products, and current plan names, prices, promotions, and platform limitations can change. Use the official Quicken comparison page.

Skip the broader product if: You only need a small monthly budget and do not want the complexity of full personal-finance software.

8. Monarch Money: a modern alternative for former Mint users

Monarch Money is aimed at households that want account aggregation, budgeting, net-worth tracking, investment visibility, and collaboration in one dashboard. Its ad-free positioning and household features make it a plausible alternative for people who previously used Mint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is more dashboard-oriented than method-driven. That makes it useful for seeing a broad financial picture, but it may not provide the same prescriptive behavior as YNAB or a traditional envelope system. Subscription pricing and introductory offers should be checked at Monarch’s pricing information and official pricing page.

Skip it if: You want a free, minimal tracker or specifically want strict envelope budgeting.

What happened to the other 2021 picks?

The original AppleToolBox article, published on April 30, 2021, listed YNAB, Daily Budget, Mint, EveryDollar, Goodbudget, spreadsheets, Wally, PocketGuard, Spendee, and Quicken. It was a useful snapshot of the market, but it should not be read as a current product ranking.

  • Mint: Treat it as historical. Current coverage describes Mint as shuttered, so do not send readers to Mint signup pages or present it as an active competitor. Former users should examine current alternatives such as Monarch Money, Quicken Simplifi, YNAB, or other active services.
  • Daily Budget: Its historical model used income, bills, savings goals, and spending to calculate a daily allowance. Current availability, support, pricing, and development status require confirmation before recommending it.
  • Wally: The original article described it as a minimalist tracker with international and multi-currency appeal. Current availability, supported institutions, pricing, and development status should be verified rather than assumed.
  • YNAB, EveryDollar, Goodbudget, PocketGuard, Spendee, spreadsheets, and Quicken: These categories remain useful, but their current prices, limits, interfaces, regional support, and feature sets must be checked before purchase.

The broader lesson is that an App Store listing does not prove that an app supports a complete budgeting workflow, remains actively maintained, or works with your bank.

Important limitations to understand

Bank synchronization is not a set-and-forget system

Connected accounts can fail because of expired credentials, changed multifactor authentication, institution outages, renamed banks, duplicate transactions, delayed transactions, pending charges, or incorrect categorization. Reconcile imported transactions instead of blindly trusting them.

Best Value

  • Rear camera: 48MP, f/1.6, wide, Front Camera: 12MP, f/1.9, wide, iOS 18.3.1, upgradable to iOS 18.5
  • Connectivity: Global 4G LTE, Sub-6 GHz 5G, LTE, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, USB-C, Wireless Charging (7.5W). (does not have mmWave 5G or MagSafe or physical SIM card) - Dual eSIM Only
  • Unlocked for freedom to choose your carrier. Compatible with both GSM & CDMA networks. The phone is unlocked to work with all GSM Carriers & CDMA Carriers Including AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Straight Talk., Etc.

If a connection fails, first check whether the bank is experiencing an outage, reconnect using the app’s official flow, and manually enter urgent transactions. Avoid repeatedly deleting and reconnecting an account unless the provider’s instructions recommend it, because doing so can create duplicates or break historical matching.

Credit cards require special attention

A credit-card purchase and the later payment are not normally two separate expenses. A competent workflow treats the payment as a transfer and the purchase as the spending event. Before committing to an app, confirm how it handles card payments, statement balances, pending transactions, and transfers.

Cash spending can disappear from an automated budget

A bank-connected app may see a cash withdrawal but not what happened afterward. Record cash purchases manually, or create a cash wallet in the app or spreadsheet. Otherwise, the category totals may look better than reality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Variable income needs a buffer

Freelancers, commission workers, seasonal employees, and households with irregular income should look for buffer categories, flexible targets, carryover balances, sinking funds, and manual forecasting. A fixed monthly envelope can work, but only if the household has enough reserve money to smooth low-income months.

Sharing a budget is not sharing a bank account

Use an app’s official household invitation when available. That is different from sharing one app password or giving another person access to underlying bank credentials. Confirm exactly what the second user can view, edit, or export.

Privacy and security are separate questions

Manual entry can reduce the need to grant a budgeting service access to financial accounts, but it does not automatically make the entire setup secure. Consider the provider’s privacy policy, encryption statements, account-connection provider, device security, cloud storage, export options, and deletion process. Do not infer data practices merely from an app being paid or free.

A practical setup routine

  1. Choose the method: Decide whether you need zero-based planning, envelopes, automated tracking, or a spreadsheet.
  2. Enter opening balances: Include checking, savings, cash, and credit-card balances as appropriate.
  3. Create fixed categories: Add rent or mortgage, utilities, insurance, subscriptions, and minimum debt payments.
  4. Add variable categories: Include groceries, fuel, dining, medical costs, and personal spending.
  5. Build sinking funds: Divide expected annual expenses by the number of months until they are due.
  6. Record income and transactions: Enter cash spending and verify imported transactions.
  7. Reconcile regularly: Compare the app or spreadsheet with bank and card statements at least weekly.
  8. Export before cancelling: Download or preserve your history, category structure, and reports before ending a subscription.

Bottom line

For the original 2021 question, YNAB was the strongest methodological recommendation for readers willing to actively plan and maintain a budget. It was not the cheapest or simplest choice, and it was never the right tool for everyone.

Choose Goodbudget for digital envelopes and shared budgeting, EveryDollar for a simple Ramsey-style system, PocketGuard for automated spendable-cash guidance, Spendee for shared wallet-style budgets, a spreadsheet for maximum flexibility and reduced account-linking, and Monarch Money or Quicken Simplifi for broader financial dashboards. Treat Mint, Daily Budget, and Wally as historical parts of the 2021 list unless current availability is independently confirmed.
