The $399 price was real, but it was a 2025 Best Buy deal—not a confirmed offer today. Chrome Unboxed reported on August 26, 2025, that Best Buy had cut the Acer Chromebook 516 GE from $649 to $399, a $250 reduction (about 38.5%). The exact configuration, SKU CBG516-1H-53TY, paired a 12th-generation Core i5 processor with a sharp 120Hz display and 256GB SSD. The researched U.S. retailer listings now indicate that this model is unavailable new at Best Buy and out of stock at Acer, so treat $399 as historical context, not a current price.
At $399, the Acer Chromebook 516 GE offered an unusually capable package for a Chromebook: a 16-inch 2560×1600 display running at 120Hz, an Intel Core i5-1240P, and a 256GB SSD. Its cloud-gaming features were a bonus, not a promise of gaming-laptop performance. Whether it is worth buying now depends on finding the exact older model at a substantial discount and checking its condition and remaining software support.
Deal recap: Best Buy’s reported price was $399, down from $649, on August 26, 2025. That promotion is not confirmed active. Best Buy’s listing for the original model says it is no longer available new; Acer’s U.S. product page lists it at $649.99 but out of stock. Listings can change, so check the seller’s live status before relying on either page.
First, make sure it is the right 516
The deal concerned the original Acer Chromebook 516 GE, model CBG516-1H-53TY. That model number matters. Acer also sells newer Chromebook Plus 516 configurations, and “516” alone does not establish that a listing has the same screen, processor, or storage. For example, Acer’s UK CB516-1H listing describes a different configuration, including a 60Hz WUXGA panel. Check the full SKU and specification sheet rather than assuming a newer 516 is a like-for-like replacement.

The Acer and Best Buy pages provide the configuration details; Best Buy also lists RGB keyboard lighting and 100% sRGB color coverage. Chrome Unboxed described the laptop as weighing about 3.75 pounds. Those features help explain why the original $399 promotion drew attention: this was more than a basic web-only machine, but the discount brought it closer to midrange Chromebook pricing.
Why the deal was compelling
The strongest argument was the combination of screen, processor, and storage. A 16-inch 16:10 display gives documents and web pages more vertical room, while 2560×1600 resolution keeps text and images sharp. The 120Hz refresh rate can make scrolling and supported content feel smoother, though it does not make every game run at 120 frames per second.

The Core i5-1240P and 256GB SSD also made the 516 GE better equipped for everyday work than many entry-level Chromebooks. Add its RGB backlit keyboard, upward-firing speakers, large OceanGlass trackpad, and wired Ethernet, and the machine had practical strengths for both desk use and entertainment. Chrome Unboxed’s original deal coverage praised the overall value and singled out the lack of touch input as a notable omission.

“Gaming” means cloud gaming here
The 516 GE was designed with cloud gaming, including NVIDIA GeForce NOW, in mind. The laptop streams a game running on remote hardware; its integrated graphics do not turn it into a conventional Windows gaming laptop. Best Buy highlights the 120Hz panel, Wi-Fi 6E, and 2.5Gbps Ethernet as gaming-oriented features.

That distinction affects what you should expect. Streaming quality depends on your internet connection, network congestion, latency, and the service you use. Ethernet can help provide a stable connection, but it cannot eliminate problems elsewhere in the network. Higher-tier features may require a paid subscription; buying the Chromebook does not include unlimited access to a cloud-gaming service. Check GeForce NOW’s official site for current service details and plans.
Local game compatibility is also limited compared with Windows laptops, and ChromeOS is not a substitute for Windows or macOS when a job depends on specialized desktop software. The GE label describes the machine’s cloud-gaming focus, not a guarantee that every PC game or professional app will run on it.

The trade-offs to weigh
- No touchscreen: Best Buy lists a non-touch display. If you annotate by hand, use touch-first apps, or want tablet-style input, this is the wrong fit.
- 8GB of RAM: It can serve ordinary ChromeOS workloads, but numerous demanding tabs, Linux development tools, or other heavy tasks leave less breathing room than 16GB.
- Size and portability: A 16-inch laptop offers room to work, but is less convenient to carry than a compact Chromebook. At about 3.75 pounds, it is not especially light for frequent travel.
- Screen and battery trade-off: A high-resolution 120Hz panel can use more power than a lower-resolution 60Hz display. The supplied specifications do not establish a battery-life figure, so do not assume all-day endurance from the screen specs alone.
- Age and availability: This is an older-generation configuration, and the researched U.S. listings show no new-stock offer at either retailer. A historical discount does not tell you whether a current used or open-box unit is fairly priced.
Should you buy one now?
At the historical $399 price, it was a strong-value Chromebook for someone who wanted a large, fast screen, an SSD, and cloud gaming. In the present market, do not use that old deal as proof that a listing is still a bargain. Acer’s $649.99 page is marked out of stock, and Best Buy says the original model is no longer available new. Paying near that old list price for remaining stock would be difficult to justify without checking newer options, condition, warranty, and support life.
A used, refurbished, or open-box 516 GE may still suit someone who specifically wants its 120Hz 2560×1600 panel and wired Ethernet. Before paying, confirm all of the following:

- You check Google’s official Chromebook update-support information for the exact model before buying. The sources here do not establish a reliable Auto Update Expiration date for this SKU, so do not guess or rely on an unsourced seller claim.
If you want a current warranty or a newer platform, compare the full specifications of newer Chromebook Plus models rather than treating them as the same 516 GE. If you need a touchscreen, Windows-only programs, or serious local gaming, look elsewhere. The old $399 deal was noteworthy because of its hardware-per-dollar mix; it does not make every remaining unit a good purchase at any price.
