As of August 18, 2026, Apple has not announced a price for its rumored first foldable iPhone. The widely repeated $2,000–$2,500 figure is best understood as an informed analyst estimate—not an Apple price, verified retailer leak, or confirmed starting MSRP.
What “pure guesswork” really means
The phrase comes from a March 6, 2025 9to5Mac analysis. Its central point remains valid: supply-chain analysts may learn about components, manufacturing, and production plans, but that does not give them access to Apple’s final pricing decision.
That does not mean the number was randomly invented. There is an important difference between:
- Pure invention: a number with no identifiable basis.
- Informed estimation: a forecast based on competing products, expected costs, margins, positioning, and supply-chain information.
- Leaked pricing: a figure allegedly taken from Apple, a carrier, retailer systems, or launch materials.
- Official pricing: a price published by Apple.
The $2,000–$2,500 range belongs in the second category. It is “guesswork” because analysts are forecasting a corporate decision they cannot verify—not because the estimate has no commercial rationale.

What the different estimates actually say
Reports now cluster around the low-to-mid-$2,000s, but they are not necessarily measuring the same thing. “Starting price,” “average selling price,” and “maximum configuration price” are materially different claims.

MacRumors’ July 2026 report cites Kuo’s later estimate and IDC-related pricing. Separate coverage cites the Fubon estimate, while a MacRumors pricing roundup summarizes Gurman, UBS, and the unverified storage figures.
There is also no evidence that every analyst is working from the same Apple pricing information. Several articles repeating a similar number do not automatically constitute independent confirmation.
Why a price above $2,000 is commercially believable
Rumor coverage describes a book-style foldable with an approximately 7.8-inch internal display and 5.5-inch external display, an extremely thin design, a new display process, ultra-thin glass, a more advanced hinge, and new battery and modem requirements. These specifications remain unconfirmed, but they explain why analysts forecast a premium device.

Fubon Research’s reported rationale specifically identifies the display panel and hinge as major contributors to the expected premium. Early production could also involve low yields, expensive quality control, and higher warranty and repair exposure.
However, component complexity does not mechanically determine the retail price. Apple could price the device according to its gross-margin target, demand forecasts, storage segmentation, scarcity, and whether it positions the product as an iPhone, an Ultra model, or a new category. Research-and-development recovery, regional taxes, currency conversion, carrier subsidies, and financing can also change what buyers actually pay.
Samsung provides context—but not proof
Samsung’s official U.S. March 2026 MSRP file lists the Galaxy Z Fold7 at $1,999.99 for 256GB, $2,119.99 for 512GB, and $2,419.99 for 1TB. That makes a $2,000–$2,500 Apple foldable commercially plausible for a premium book-style phone, but it does not show that Apple will match or exceed Samsung.

Broader market context points the other way as well. Counterpoint-related reporting forecast the average price of all foldables at about $1,485 in 2026, with book-style models priced above clamshells. Devices above $2,000 were expected to remain a small segment. A $2,400 Apple model could therefore be plausible while still being an unusually expensive mainstream smartphone.

Samsung’s figures are official U.S. MSRPs, whereas the Apple numbers are estimates. Temporary discounts, trade-ins, financing, storage, and regional pricing must be accounted for before making a like-for-like comparison.

Yes. An adoption-focused strategy could put the entry model closer to the $1,800–$2,000 range cited by UBS. Apple might accept lower first-generation margins to establish a larger installed base, encourage upgrades, or make the product a credible alternative to carrying an iPhone and tablet.
The opposite scenario is also possible. If the base model is near $2,300–$2,500, higher storage could push the top configuration toward $3,000. The rumored $2,320, $2,610, and $2,900 ladder should be treated only as an unverified estimate. Likewise, IDC-related reporting that some configurations could approach $3,000 does not mean every model will cost that much.
IDC’s January 2026 forecast projected an average Apple foldable price of roughly $2,400 and more than 22% first-year unit share. That is a market forecast, not an Apple MSRP. A $2,000 entry model combined with expensive storage upgrades could produce a $2,400 average; alternatively, a $2,400 base model could result in an even higher average.

Supply shortages could affect the real cost
Reports attributed to Kuo suggest approximately 7–8 million units could be produced in the second half of 2026, with only about 0.5–1 million expected in the third quarter. Other reporting suggests four-to-six-week or longer delivery estimates and a possible delayed retail rollout. These are supply-chain estimates, not Apple disclosures.
Limited availability could raise a buyer’s effective cost without changing Apple’s official MSRP. Resellers may add markups, launch promotions may be scarce, and trade-in offers may be less generous for a new product category. Repair and replacement costs could also be harder to predict. A reported forecast of resale premiums as high as 50%–100% is not an observed market price and should not be treated as guaranteed.
How to verify future price reports
- Check whether the source is Apple, a carrier, a retailer, or an analyst.
- Identify whether the number is a starting price, average selling price, or top-configuration price.
- Confirm the storage capacity.
- Check whether it is U.S. pre-tax pricing or a converted regional figure.
- Distinguish MSRP from a promotion, financing offer, or trade-in price.
- Look for a new source rather than recycled coverage of an older estimate.
- Ask whether the report supplies evidence or merely repeats a number.
The strongest confirmation would be an Apple product page or press release listing the model, storage options, U.S. MSRP, and availability. The reviewed reports do not establish any of those details. They also do not confirm the final product name, launch date, crease behavior, camera layout, biometrics, modem, battery, or hinge material.

Until Apple publishes official specifications and pricing, the rumored foldable is an information product rather than a verifiable product listing. Buyers should compare it with choices available now:
- Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7: the clearest current alternative for Android multitasking and a large book-style screen. Some configurations or colors may be unavailable, and promotions should not be confused with permanent MSRP.
- Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold: an Android alternative centered on Google software, Pixel photography, and AI features. Check the live product page for current pricing and availability.
- Conventional iPhone plus iPad or iPad mini: a lower first-generation-risk option with a mature phone, easier repair and replacement decisions, and a separate large screen. It is not a substitute for one device that folds into a tablet-sized display.
For a personal-finance decision, compare the complete cost: pre-tax price, storage, AppleCare or other protection, repair exposure, financing interest, trade-in value, and likely replacement period. Do not budget from the $2,400 rumor as though it were a confirmed amount.
The Bottom Line
“Pure guesswork” is too absolute if it implies the $2,000–$2,500 figure has no rationale. It is accurate if it means nobody outside Apple has verified the final price. Treat the range as a serious, increasingly convergent market estimate—not a fact. The final answer will come only from Apple’s official product page, price list, and availability details.
