Some links on this page are affiliate links: if you buy through them we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you.

The best free SEO stack is not one all-in-one platform: it is a set of tools matched to distinct jobs. Start with Google Search Console for your own Google search data, then add Bing Webmaster Tools, keyword and trend research, and page diagnostics. The picks below distinguish truly free products from limited free tiers and tools that require site verification, so you can build a useful workflow without paying for a suite.

How to choose a free SEO tool

“Free” can mean no-cost access, a capped account, a tool available only for verified site owners, or a desktop edition with a fixed crawl limit. Check the restriction that matters to your work before building a process around a tool.

  • First-party data: Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools report information from their own search engines for sites you control.
  • Estimates and ideas: Keyword Planner is advertising-oriented, Trends is relative-interest data, and third-party platforms use their own databases and models. These numbers answer different questions and should not be compared as if they were the same metric.
  • Scope: Some tools inspect one page; a crawler checks patterns across a site. Analytics measures visitor behavior after a click, not rankings.
  • Actionability: Treat a score or warning as a lead to investigate, not an instruction to change a site. Prioritize issues that affect users or prevent search engines from accessing important pages.

1. Google Search Console: best overall starting point

Search Console is the essential free tool for a site owner because it reports how that site performs in Google Search rather than estimating its traffic from an outside database. Its reports cover clicks, impressions, click-through rate and average position, with dimensions such as query and page. It also provides URL Inspection, indexing and sitemap information, security issues and Core Web Vitals. Google outlines setup and the main reports in its Search Console documentation.

To find practical opportunities, open Performance → Search results, review pages with substantial impressions, and inspect the queries bringing those impressions. A page with impressions but a weaker-than-expected click-through rate may merit a closer look at its title, snippet and search intent; it is not proof that a rewrite will improve rankings. Average position is an aggregate, not a fixed rank every searcher sees.

Use URL Inspection to check an important URL’s indexed status or run a live test. Review Page indexing, Sitemaps and Core Web Vitals for broader diagnostics. Submitting a sitemap is a hint, not a guarantee of crawling or indexing; Google explains this in its sitemap documentation. Google allows up to 50 MB uncompressed or 50,000 URLs per sitemap file; larger sets need multiple sitemap files and can be organized with a sitemap index.

2. Bing Webmaster Tools: a second search-engine view

Bing Webmaster Tools is a free source of Bing performance data and includes technical features such as Site Scan, as described on Bing’s overview. Add it alongside Search Console if Bing visibility matters to your audience: it offers another indexation and search-performance perspective, but its numbers reflect Bing rather than Google.

Bing’s published retirement notice applies to its legacy SOAP and POX APIs, with an August 31, 2026 retirement date; it should not be read as a notice that every current Webmaster Tools interface or API is ending. See Bing’s notice if you rely on automation.

3. Google Keyword Planner: best free keyword-volume starting point

Keyword Planner can generate ideas from seed terms, a website or a product category, and it provides advertiser-oriented search-volume and competition information. It is part of Google Ads, and access or data detail can vary with account configuration. Its competition metric describes advertising competition, not organic ranking difficulty. Use the tool to build a list of candidate topics, group them by intent, and validate likely seasonality in Trends rather than treating a volume figure as promised traffic.

4. Google Trends: best for timing and relative demand

Google Trends is useful for comparing interest over time, across regions or between topics. It can reveal recurring seasonal demand or a rising topic that a static volume estimate does not make obvious. Trends reports relative interest, not exact monthly search volume. A steep rise from a small baseline may still represent modest demand, and similar phrases may reflect different intent. Compare terms over an appropriate time range, then validate with Keyword Planner or your site’s Search Console data.

5. PageSpeed Insights: best single-page performance diagnostic

PageSpeed Insights analyzes an individual URL and combines Lighthouse-style lab diagnostics with field data when enough real-user data is available. Its API documentation describes the report data and interface. Field data may not be available for a low-traffic page, while lab results can vary between runs; neither a high score nor a perfect score guarantees rankings.

Google’s current “good” Core Web Vitals thresholds are LCP at or below 2.5 seconds, INP below 200 milliseconds and CLS below 0.1, as documented in its Core Web Vitals guidance. Use the report to identify likely user-experience bottlenecks and prioritize feasible fixes, not to chase every diagnostic regardless of cost.

6. Lighthouse: best open-source local audit

Lighthouse runs audits from Chrome and developer tooling, making it useful for developers and technical SEO beginners checking a page locally or comparing changes before deployment. It covers performance and other page-quality checks, including accessibility and SEO-related checks. Lighthouse lab scores are affected by test conditions and do not replace Search Console’s index and query reports or PageSpeed Insights field data.

7. Screaming Frog SEO Spider: best free crawler for a small site

Screaming Frog SEO Spider is a desktop crawler that can surface site-wide patterns that a single-page checker will miss. Its free version allows 500 URLs per crawl; the limit and included features are listed on its pricing page. Within that scope, it can help find broken links, redirects, missing or duplicated titles and descriptions, heading issues, canonicals, robots directives, hreflang problems, duplicate pages and structured-data issues. It can also generate XML sitemaps.

Enter the site URL, run a crawl, then inspect response codes, titles, meta descriptions, H1s, canonicals, robots directives and redirect paths. Export affected URLs so fixes can be assigned and checked. JavaScript-rendered pages may need JavaScript rendering enabled; that adds crawl complexity and resource use. A crawl reports conditions, not whether a page deserves to rank. The free limit is suitable for many small sites, but large catalogs or publishers may need section-by-section or sitemap-based crawls.

8. Ahrefs Free: best for verified-site SEO data

Ahrefs Free offers limited access to tools including Site Explorer, Site Audit and Web Analytics; the relevant site-owner features require verification. Ahrefs says its free Site Audit checks more than 170 technical and on-page issue types on its Webmaster Tools page. It can complement Search Console with Ahrefs’ own crawl and backlink index, plus data about organic keywords and pages for a verified property.

This is not unrestricted competitor research or a replacement for your own analytics. Ahrefs’ keyword, traffic and backlink figures are third-party database outputs, not the site’s actual search or visit totals. The free plan’s limits are described in Ahrefs’ help documentation.

9. Semrush Free Tools: best for quick standalone checks

Semrush’s free-tools collection includes standalone options for keyword research, site analysis, backlinks, page speed, traffic insights and other tasks. It is handy when you need a quick check without adopting a full suite. There is no single free limit for the collection: caps, account requirements and available outputs vary by tool, and some results may be sampled or limited. Choose the specific tool for the question you have rather than treating “Semrush Free Tools” as one unlimited product.

10. Google Rich Results Test: best for Google result eligibility

Use the Rich Results Test to test a live URL or code snippet against structured-data types Google supports for rich results. It can identify markup errors and missing required properties. Passing means a page may be eligible; it does not guarantee Google will show a rich result, improve ranking or send more traffic.

11. Schema Markup Validator: best for broader schema checks

The Schema Markup Validator checks Schema.org markup beyond Google’s rich-result feature set. It answers a different question from Google’s test: markup can be valid Schema.org without qualifying for a Google rich result. Use the validator for vocabulary and syntax checks, and the Rich Results Test when Google eligibility is the question.

12. Google Analytics 4: best for what visitors do after search

Google Analytics 4 helps measure landing-page behavior, engagement and conversions after visitors arrive. It is not a rank tracker or keyword database. Search Console measures Google Search exposure and clicks; Analytics measures activity on the site. Their figures will not match exactly because they measure different things, as Google explains in its Search Console and Analytics comparison. Use them together to connect search visibility with business outcomes rather than trying to reconcile every count.

13. Google Business Profile: best free local-search presence tool

Google Business Profile lets eligible local businesses manage how they appear in Google Search and Maps, including business details, hours, service areas, photos and reviews. It is a priority for businesses serving a geographic area—such as tradespeople, clinics, restaurants, retailers and professional services—but not a general-purpose SEO tool for a national publisher with no local presence. Eligibility, verification and policy compliance apply, and a profile does not replace a useful local website.

14. AnswerThePublic: best for question-led content ideas

AnswerThePublic can expand a seed topic into questions and phrase ideas organized around modifiers such as who, what, why, how and comparisons. Use the suggestions to brainstorm angles, not as proof that people search for every phrase or that each deserves an article. Free usage is limited, and the current quota is not stated here; validate useful ideas with Trends, Keyword Planner, Search Console or direct search-result inspection.

15. SEO Minion or Detailed SEO Extension: best for a quick page check

A browser extension can make a fast inspection of titles, descriptions, headings, canonicals, robots directives, links and other on-page elements. Consider SEO Minion or the Detailed SEO Extension, checking the current browser support, permissions and included features before installing. An extension is a convenient spot-check tool, not a crawler, backlink index, analytics platform or source of search-engine performance data.

Build a free SEO workflow around your site

Choose tools according to your job rather than installing every option. A practical sequence is to establish first-party search data, research topics, check important pages, and then measure whether visits contribute to your goals.

  1. Set up Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Verify your site, review indexing, and check search performance in each engine you care about.
  2. Research content demand. Generate seed ideas with Keyword Planner or AnswerThePublic, use Trends to assess timing and regional interest, and consult Search Console for queries already generating impressions.
  3. Audit technical patterns. Crawl a small site with Screaming Frog, then use PageSpeed Insights or Lighthouse to investigate page-level performance. Validate markup with the appropriate schema tool.
  4. Measure outcomes. Use Analytics to examine landing-page engagement and conversions, while keeping its post-click metrics distinct from search-engine impressions and clicks.
  5. For local businesses, maintain the profile. Keep an eligible, verified Google Business Profile accurate alongside the website and search-engine tools.

What free SEO tools cannot do

  • They do not provide one complete view of the market. First-party search data covers your property in a particular engine; third-party databases estimate activity using their own methods.
  • They do not guarantee rankings. Scores, keyword volume, schema validity and technical warnings are evidence to interpret, not promises of visibility.
  • They do not make every metric comparable. Search Console clicks, Analytics sessions, Trends interest, advertising-oriented volume and vendor traffic estimates have different definitions.
  • They may limit scale or access. Ownership verification, query caps, account setup and crawl limits can define what a free tool can do. A 500-URL crawl, for example, may not cover a large ecommerce catalog.
  • They cannot replace prioritization. Fix issues that block discovery, create poor user experiences or affect important pages; do not change a page solely to improve an arbitrary score.

For many small sites, Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, Keyword Planner, Trends, PageSpeed Insights and a modest crawler are enough to make informed progress without buying an all-in-one suite. Add a paid product only when a specific limit—such as competitor research, larger recurring crawls or broader reporting—actually blocks the work.
