Elon Musk said Samsung’s semiconductor facility in Taylor, Texas, will manufacture Tesla’s next-generation AI6 chip. The reported multiyear agreement is valued at a minimum of $16.5 billion and could make Tesla a major U.S. anchor customer for Samsung Foundry. But the figure is not necessarily an upfront payment or fab-construction budget, and available reporting does not establish that AI6 is already in commercial production.
What Tesla and Samsung announced
In July 2025, Musk said on X that Samsung’s new Texas fab would be dedicated to making Tesla’s AI6 processor. Reporting attributed to Samsung described a semiconductor supply or foundry agreement with a minimum value of about $16.5 billion.
Musk also said Tesla would be able to work with Samsung to improve manufacturing efficiency and that he intended to visit the production line. Those comments indicate close cooperation, but they do not mean Tesla will operate Samsung’s fab or control its semiconductor process.
The announcement came from Musk’s public statements and media reporting. The complete legal, technical and commercial terms—including volumes, pricing, process technology, packaging and delivery milestones—have not been disclosed in the supplied material.

What the $16.5 billion figure means
The reported $16.5 billion should be understood as the minimum value of a long-term semiconductor agreement—not as $16.5 billion that Tesla paid Samsung upfront, and not as the amount Samsung is spending to build its Texas facility.
The agreement has been reported as running through December 31, 2033, although some coverage has described it as an eight-year deal. Those descriptions may reflect different effective dates, amendments or reporting conventions. The primary contract or a formal company filing would be needed to resolve the discrepancy.
Musk reportedly characterized $16.5 billion as a floor, saying actual output could be several times higher. That does not guarantee that Samsung will receive the full amount as profit. Economics will depend on wafer volumes, chip prices, manufacturing yields, startup costs, packaging, testing and Tesla’s ability to take delivery.

For advanced chips, usable output matters more than headline capacity. A wafer can contain many potential dies, but defects and process problems reduce the number that pass testing. A large contract therefore does not automatically guarantee a large supply of finished, working AI6 processors.
Why Taylor, Texas, matters
Samsung’s planned or developing semiconductor facility is in Taylor, near Austin and Tesla’s headquarters. A successful program could give Tesla access to a future U.S.-based source of advanced computing hardware while supporting Samsung’s effort to expand domestic chip manufacturing.
However, “made in America” requires careful qualification. Wafer fabrication in Texas would not necessarily mean that chip design, equipment, materials, advanced packaging, testing, memory or every upstream component is U.S.-made. A Texas fab could be an important domestic manufacturing step without making the entire chip supply chain domestic.

The project also has execution stages that should not be conflated: facility construction, equipment installation, first wafer, process qualification, pilot production and high-volume manufacturing. The supplied reporting does not establish whether Taylor had begun commercial production by September 2026, whether Tesla had received qualification wafers or whether AI6 had completed final design validation.

How AI4, AI5 and AI6 fit together
Musk’s comments describe a multi-foundry roadmap rather than a complete switch from one supplier to another:
| Chip generation | Reported manufacturing plan | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| AI4 | Reportedly manufactured by Samsung | That every Tesla model uses the same configuration or supplier |
| AI5 | Musk said TSMC would make it first in Taiwan and later in Arizona | A fixed vehicle launch date or guaranteed production volume |
| AI6 | Musk said Samsung’s Taylor facility would manufacture it | A confirmed process node, performance specification or commercial launch date |
Some secondary headlines have called the chip “A16,” but Musk’s post and much of the reporting use AI6. “AI6” is the safer term unless referring directly to a source that uses “A16.”
What AI6 might be used for
AI6 is best described conservatively as Tesla’s reported next-generation autonomous-computing chip. Coverage has associated future Tesla silicon with:
- advanced driver-assistance and autonomous-driving functions;
- Tesla vehicles;
- humanoid robots; and
- AI training or inference systems.
Those possible applications do not establish that one unchanged piece of silicon will be used in all those products. Vehicles, robots and data-center systems can require different packaging, reliability requirements, software integration and operating conditions.

Why Samsung wants the contract
Samsung is a major semiconductor manufacturer, but its contract-chipmaking operation has faced strong competition from TSMC. A large Tesla commitment could provide Samsung Foundry with an anchor customer for its U.S. expansion and a reference account when pursuing other customers.
The agreement could improve factory utilization and strengthen Samsung’s position in advanced foundry manufacturing. It is not, by itself, proof that Samsung has matched TSMC on yield, cost, process maturity or customer confidence.
Samsung also faces concentration risk. A single major customer can provide scale, but weak yields, Tesla design changes, delayed demand or unattractive pricing could make the revenue less profitable than the headline value suggests.

What the deal means for Tesla
For Tesla, the potential advantages are strategic:
- Supplier diversification: Tesla would have another major manufacturing partner alongside TSMC.
- Geographic diversification: U.S. production could reduce reliance on one region, although it would not remove exposure to global suppliers.
- Closer manufacturing collaboration: Tesla could work with Samsung on process control, cycle time, yield and qualification.
- Future capacity: A long-term commitment could support the large computing requirements of vehicles, robots and other AI systems.
The limitations are equally important. A foundry agreement does not solve shortages of semiconductor equipment, materials, memory, packaging or testing capacity. U.S. fabrication may also cost more than production elsewhere. And better silicon alone does not guarantee better autonomy or robotics: software, training data, sensors, validation, regulation and system integration remain critical.
The reported timeline
| Milestone | Reported position | Confidence or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| July 2025 | Musk announced the Samsung/Taylor AI6 plan | High as an attributed public statement |
| 2025 | AI6 was described as a future-generation design, with AI5 ahead in the roadmap | Roadmap language, not a fixed launch schedule |
| 2026 | Some coverage expected Texas production to begin | Historical forecast; supplied material does not confirm whether it was met |
| 2027 | One report suggested AI6 could begin equipping vehicles | Forecast, not a confirmed Tesla commitment |
| Around 2028 | Industry commentary pointed to mass production or deliveries | Uncertain estimate |
| Through 2033 | Secondary reporting cited December 31, 2033, as the contract end date | Primary-document confirmation is still needed |
Production of a chip and installation of that chip in vehicles are separate milestones. Even if Samsung begins making wafers on schedule, Tesla would still need to qualify the design, complete packaging and testing, integrate the processor into vehicle systems and scale production.
What could derail the plan?
The main test is execution. Investors and industry watchers should look for:

- Process qualification: Can Samsung qualify Tesla’s design on schedule?
- Yield: Are enough dies usable after testing?
- Volume: Can Samsung meet demand from vehicles, robots or data centers?
- Cost: Is Texas production competitive with Taiwan or Arizona?
- Packaging and testing: Are downstream facilities ready at the necessary scale?
- Roadmap stability: Does Tesla keep the same architecture and demand assumptions?
- Regulation and geopolitics: Do trade rules, subsidies or export controls affect the program?
If AI6 is delayed, Tesla could continue using earlier generations, rely on AI5 or seek interim capacity. If yields are poor, the contract’s headline value could overstate the number of usable chips delivered. If Tesla changes its architecture, Samsung may need to requalify the product.
Bottom line
The Tesla–Samsung arrangement is a real and strategically significant reported semiconductor deal. Musk says Samsung’s Taylor, Texas, facility will manufacture AI6, while TSMC is expected to handle AI5 and Samsung already makes AI4. The reported $16.5 billion is a multiyear minimum contract value—not an upfront Tesla payment or a measure of the fab’s construction cost.
The decisive questions remain unanswered: whether Taylor reaches high-volume production, whether Samsung achieves acceptable yields, when Tesla qualifies AI6 and whether the chip reaches vehicles on the reported 2027–2028 timetable. Until those milestones are confirmed, AI6 should be treated as a planned future product rather than a chip already shipping in Tesla vehicles.
