Bottom line: Temu did not confirm a breach involving 87 million users. In September 2024, an unidentified actor claimed to have Temu customer data, but Temu said its investigation found that none of the circulated records matched its systems. The allegation remains disputed and has not been independently confirmed in the sources reviewed.
What was alleged
An unknown actor reportedly advertised or circulated a dataset containing approximately 87 million lines of alleged Temu customer data. The claim appeared on an illicit marketplace or cybercrime forum and was accompanied by a sample, according to contemporaneous reporting from Bitdefender and later reporting from Cybernews.
The figure should not be rewritten as 87 million confirmed users or accounts. “Lines,” “records,” or “entries” may include duplicates, incomplete records, or multiple entries belonging to the same person.
What data was reportedly included?
A filing by the Texas attorney general, citing the 2024 reporting, said the alleged data included:

- Full names
- Dates of birth and gender
- Phone numbers
- Shipping addresses
- Usernames and user IDs
- IP addresses
- Hashed passwords
These are alleged data categories, not confirmed exposed Temu information. A real person’s name, address, or phone number appearing in a sample would not by itself prove that Temu was the source. The filing is available as a Texas attorney general petition.
If authentic, the combination could make phishing and fraud more convincing. Names, addresses, phone numbers, order details, and account identifiers could support fake delivery, refund, coupon, or account-verification messages. Hashed passwords are not plaintext passwords, but weak or reused passwords can still create risk if attackers crack the hashes or try the same password on other services.
What Temu said
Temu said it investigated the claim and found that not a single line of the disseminated data matched its actual records. The company characterized the allegation as an attempt to profit from or damage its reputation. That is Temu’s reported position, not an independent forensic finding.

The actor’s identity, the dataset’s origin, and any verifiable financial motive were not established in the reviewed coverage. It is reasonable to say the claim may have been intended to attract buyers, pressure the company, or generate publicity, but the available evidence does not establish that the actor demanded a ransom or received payment.
Is this a confirmed Temu breach?
No. The most accurate description is an alleged or unverified breach claim, not “Temu was hacked.” The reviewed sources contain a threat actor’s claim and an alleged sample, followed by Temu’s denial. They do not establish independent forensic confirmation from a regulator, security researcher, affected users, or a company investigation made public in detail.
That does not prove that no compromise occurred. A company could reject a sample because it does not match its records while a separate incident remained undiscovered. A breach could also involve a contractor, logistics provider, analytics service, seller, or another third party rather than Temu’s core systems.

What could explain a disputed sample?
Possible explanations include:
- Fabricated or altered records
- Information scraped from public or semi-public sources
- Data recycled from an older breach
- Records stolen from another marketplace or company
- A genuine third-party dataset misattributed to Temu
- Old or inaccurate data that is difficult to trace
- A genuine Temu compromise that was not recognized through the sample
Temu’s conclusion was that the records did not match its systems; it did not, based on the reviewed material, identify the dataset’s true source.
What evidence would confirm the claim?
A stronger case would require several independently verified records and evidence tying them specifically to Temu. Useful indicators could include unique internal identifiers, matching database structures and field conventions, current non-public transaction information, authentication of the forum account, and a documented chain of custody for the sample.
Independent validation by reputable security researchers, a public company forensic report, or a regulator’s statement would provide substantially more support than a small sample of plausible-looking personal information.

Do later Temu controversies prove this breach?
No. Temu’s alleged privacy practices, data-collection questions, and regulatory disputes are separate from whether the 2024 dataset claim was genuine.
For example, the U.S. Department of Justice said on September 8, 2025, that Temu agreed to a $2 million civil penalty and injunction concerning alleged violations of the INFORM Consumers Act. That enforcement action does not establish that Temu suffered a database breach.

Texas’s 2026 complaint makes allegations about Temu’s data practices and other conduct. Those are litigation allegations, not an adjudicated finding, and they do not authenticate the separate 87-million-record claim. The later Cybernews report also discusses a separate alleged Pinduoduo ransomware listing involving a different claimed dataset. It should not be merged with the Temu allegation.

What Temu users should do
Because the breach is unconfirmed, users do not need to panic or assume their Temu accounts were exposed. The following precautions are sensible regardless:
- Change any reused password. Use a unique, long password for Temu and for every other important account.
- Protect your email account first. If the same password was used for email, banking, payment services, social networks, or cloud storage, change it there immediately. Review active sessions, recovery details, and multifactor-authentication settings.
- Enable multifactor authentication or other account-security options available in your Temu account.
- Review orders, payment activity, and account settings for changes you did not make.
- Be skeptical of Temu-themed messages. Do not provide passwords, one-time codes, payment details, or identity documents through unsolicited links.
- Check your email address through a reputable breach-notification service. A service such as Have I Been Pwned can identify known public breach listings, but it cannot confirm whether the disputed Temu dataset was genuine.
- Contact your card issuer or payment provider if you see an unauthorized transaction.
- Save suspicious messages and screenshots so they can be reported and investigated.
Temu’s Safety Center provides guidance on protecting account and payment information, recognizing scam messages, and reporting suspicious activity.
Should you delete your Temu account?
Deleting the app or account is not a required response to this unverified allegation and would not undo information that a company may already hold. If you no longer want to use Temu, you can choose to close the account after saving any necessary order records, but the security priority is changing reused passwords and monitoring payment activity.

Paid identity-monitoring services are generally more appropriate when there is evidence of identity theft, exposure of highly sensitive identity information, or suspicious activity—not simply because of this disputed claim.
What remains unknown
- Who the actor was
- Where the alleged data came from
- Whether any authentic Temu records were included
- Whether a vendor or other third party was involved
- Whether independent researchers or regulators validated the sample
- Whether the claimed 87 million lines represented unique people
The conclusion should change only if Temu, a regulator, an independent researcher, or affected users authenticate records and connect them to Temu systems or a Temu service provider. Until then, the allegation is best treated as disputed and unverified.
