GeekWire’s Sept. 6, 2024, Tech Moves roundup reported four Pacific Northwest leadership changes: former Microsoft developer-division leader S. “Soma” Somasegar joined UiPath’s board, Trupanion promoted John Gallagher to chief operating officer, Grace Yoo became an assistant director at the Washington State Department of Commerce, and Connie Collingsworth joined the Washington Research Foundation board. These are 2024 announcements, not newly reported appointments in 2026.

Soma Somasegar joins UiPath’s board
UiPath added S. “Soma” Somasegar to its board of directors. This was a board appointment, not a publicly described operating role at the automation-software company; the available report does not establish whether the appointment was subject to a shareholder vote, designated as independent, or paired with an advisory assignment.

A Microsoft and Madrona background
Somasegar spent 27 years at Microsoft and held several leadership positions, including senior vice president of the developer division. He joined Seattle venture firm Madrona in 2015 and was a managing director there when UiPath announced the move.
Madrona had invested in UiPath in 2018, before UiPath became a publicly traded company in 2021. That investment history helps explain the regional connection, but it does not by itself establish why he was selected for the board.
Why UiPath highlighted his experience
UiPath CEO Daniel Dines said Somasegar’s enterprise-technology experience would be valuable as UiPath pursued business outcomes through its automation and AI platform. That is the company’s stated rationale; the appointment does not prove that Somasegar will direct a particular product, acquisition, or AI initiative. His experience leading a major developer organization is relevant context for a company selling enterprise software, but board members generally provide governance and strategic oversight rather than running day-to-day teams.

Seattle-based pet-insurance company Trupanion named John Gallagher chief operating officer. Gallagher had been with Trupanion for seven years as of the September 2024 report and most recently served as executive vice president of global shared services.

What the promotion signals—and what it does not
A COO is an operating executive responsible for coordinating execution across the business. Gallagher’s move therefore differs from a board appointment: it places him in the company’s operating leadership structure. His global-shared-services background points to experience managing cross-functional infrastructure and processes, although the report does not specify a new portfolio, a succession plan, a newly created position, or a turnaround mandate.
The announcement also should not be read as evidence of financial distress or a change in Trupanion’s CEO, finance, underwriting, or technology leadership. Those conclusions are not established by the reported appointment.

Grace Yoo takes an assistant-director role at Washington Commerce
The Washington State Department of Commerce named Grace Yoo an assistant director. Commerce is a state agency whose work spans economic development and business support, so the appointment connects the roundup to Washington’s public-sector innovation and technology environment rather than to a private software company.
Public policy, government, and sustainability experience
Yoo previously served as executive director of the Washington State Women’s Commission. Her background also includes environmental-related work at Starbucks and more than a decade at the U.S. Department of State.
The available report does not identify her precise Commerce portfolio, reporting line, or start date. It therefore supports describing her as an experienced public-policy and government leader, not as the person who controls Washington technology policy or a specific economic-development program.

The Washington Research Foundation appointed Connie Collingsworth to its board of directors. The foundation is a Washington-based research and innovation organization; it is distinct from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, where Collingsworth previously served as chief operating officer and chief legal officer.
Why her foundation experience is relevant
Those former operating and legal roles are directly relevant to board work involving organizational stewardship, governance, and the management of research-focused institutions. They do not mean Collingsworth ran the Gates Foundation, and the report does not identify a specific Washington Research Foundation grantmaking portfolio, committee assignment, or board term.
