For IT channel businesses, the immediate risk from the 2026 memory crunch may be unstable pricing more than an outright inability to buy hardware. TD SYNNEX CEO Patrick Zammit told CRN that some vendor quotes are valid for about 15 days, down from 30 days and, in some cases, 45. He expects hardware average selling prices to rise 10% to 20%, potentially more, during 2026. That is Zammit’s estimate, not formal TD SYNNEX guidance.

TD SYNNEX says it is pressing vendors not to reprice orders already in the backlog, while acknowledging that new orders may cost more. For resellers, MSPs and business customers, that distinction matters: a product can remain obtainable yet become harder to quote profitably, contract for, or approve before its price changes.

What is short, and what does that mean for buyers?

The pressure extends beyond one type of memory. Channel distributors have reported constraints involving conventional DRAM, high-bandwidth memory (HBM) used in AI systems, SSDs and hard drives, as well as complete systems whose cost or delivery depends on those components. Hyperscale demand for infrastructure can also increase competition for compute, storage and networking equipment. CRN’s distributor coverage describes those broader supply-chain pressures.

Three different risks are often bundled under the word “shortage”:

  • Hand-sorted memory chips ensure high performance with generous overclocking headroom
  • VENGEANCE LPX is optimized for wide compatibility with the latest Intel and AMD DDR4 motherboards
  • A low-profile height of just 34mm ensures that VENGEANCE LPX even fits in most small-form-factor builds
  • A solid aluminum heatspreader efficiently dissipates heat from each module so that they consistently run at high clock speeds
  • Availability risk: A supplier cannot provide the required product or quantity when needed.
  • Price risk: The product may be available, but the price or quote expires before the customer approves the purchase.
  • Margin and contract risk: A reseller may have promised a customer a fixed price or date, then face a higher replacement cost or a changed delivery estimate from its supplier.

A 15-day quote window is particularly difficult for public-sector purchases, financing decisions, board approvals, lengthy security reviews and fixed-price managed-service agreements. Even without a stock-out, a quote can become commercially unusable before the buyer is ready to act.

What “fighting for the channel” means

Zammit’s phrase refers chiefly to TD SYNNEX advocating that vendors honor the prices on existing backlog orders rather than retroactively repricing them. He said the company is making that case to vendors while recognizing that future orders face a different cost environment. This is a negotiation position, not a guarantee that every vendor will preserve every previously quoted price.

“Backlog” itself can mean different things in a supply chain: a quote may be open, a purchase order may be accepted, an order may be allocated, or a shipment may be scheduled. The relevant price-protection point can vary by vendor and contract. Before relying on a prior price, partners should establish in writing:

  • What status qualifies as backlog and whether the order is accepted, allocated or merely quoted.
  • Whether price protection is tied to purchase-order acceptance, shipment or invoicing.
  • Whether a change in memory or storage configuration resets the price.
  • How partial shipments, customer delays, currency, freight or other adjustments are treated.

The distribution chain—component supplier, OEM or system builder, distributor, reseller or MSP, and end customer—can expose each party to different inventory, allocation and contractual terms. Inventory at a distributor can help with near-term availability; it does not automatically guarantee the reseller’s future replacement cost or customer price.

What the quote and price figures do—and do not—say

Zammit told CRN that quote validity had shortened to about 15 days from 30 days, and in some situations from 45 days. He also expects hardware average selling prices to increase about 10% to 20%, potentially more, during 2026. These are his descriptions and outlook, not a universal quote rule, retail price list, independently verified market forecast or TD SYNNEX financial guidance.

The practical significance is not just the size of a possible increase. If a vendor quote expires before a customer decision, a partner may need to re-quote, absorb a cost increase, renegotiate scope or delay the project. A budget estimate should not be represented as a firm price unless its terms actually make it one.

How channel partners can reduce exposure

The following are procurement practices suggested by the reported quote-validity and backlog issues; they are not TD SYNNEX contractual instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Match the customer quote window to supplier terms. If vendor pricing is valid for a short period, avoid giving the customer a longer unqualified fixed-price commitment. A budgetary estimate followed by a firm quote after approval can be more workable.
  2. State what is and is not firm. Separate firm prices from indicative pricing and document any vendor adjustment or re-quote conditions where legally appropriate. Keep hardware, software, services, freight and implementation assumptions distinct.
  3. Record the configuration and dates. Capture quote date and expiry, memory quantity, storage type, model and configuration. Recheck availability and pricing immediately before placing the purchase order.
  4. Verify backlog protection directly. Ask the vendor and distributor how the order is classified, what event locks the price, and whether changes or partial shipments affect protection. Do not infer protection from a quote alone.
  5. Accelerate decisions on critical items. Obtain customer approval quickly for components with volatile pricing, while avoiding pressure to buy equipment before architecture and requirements are settled.
  6. Consider phased delivery only if the design permits it. Partial shipments may bring critical capacity online sooner, but confirm their price and delivery treatment and ensure the customer can operate safely with a phased deployment.

When to buy or reserve early

Earlier purchasing or reservation is more defensible when the customer has approved the project, the configuration is stable, the deadline is consequential, price protection is clear, and the cost of delay exceeds inventory carrying costs. It is less compelling when requirements remain unsettled or the order would leave the partner holding expensive, mismatched stock.

Inventory is protection with a balance-sheet cost

Building inventory may help secure availability and near-term costs, but ties up cash and creates exposure to obsolescence, storage and warranty costs, configuration mismatch, customer concentration and a possible price correction. TD SYNNEX’s ability to fund inventory should not be assumed for a smaller reseller or distributor; scale can help purchasing and financing while also magnifying absolute working-capital exposure.

Why AI and hyperscale demand reach beyond memory

AI systems consume HBM and other memory, but large deployments also require compute, SSDs, hard drives, networking and supporting data-center infrastructure. Hyperscalers are absorbing substantial capacity across several categories, contributing to pressure felt by other buyers. That does not mean every enterprise will immediately build AI infrastructure: budgets, power and cooling availability, software readiness and uncertain returns can all defer projects.

Zammit says TD SYNNEX’s Hyve Solutions business, which serves hyperscale customers, gave the company earlier visibility into demand. He said TD SYNNEX built inventory in October and November 2025 in response. That is management’s account, not independently audited inventory data in the interview. Early visibility and inventory can be advantages, but they do not eliminate allocation limits, price increases or inventory risk; Zammit also cautioned that the advantage may diminish as constraints persist.

TD SYNNEX’s filing describes Hyve as a business designing, manufacturing and delivering traditional and accelerated compute, cloud and connected infrastructure. Hyve became a separately reported segment in fiscal 2026, reflecting how management evaluates the operation; it is not an ordinary direct-to-consumer purchasing channel. Why Zammit sees business demand as more resilient than consumer demand

Zammit’s demand thesis is that business hardware may be supported by refresh needs that are harder to postpone indefinitely. He points to PCs compatible with Windows 11, server-generation upgrades for efficiency, endpoint-security replacements, data-center switching upgrades for AI, and storage modernization. These are demand supports, not a guarantee that business volumes will be unaffected; he said the magnitude of any pull-ins or pull-forwards was too early to quantify.

Consumer buyers, in his view, are more exposed to price increases because they can delay a purchase, choose a lower specification or consider used equipment. The interview does not provide a separate consumer-volume dataset or quantified price-elasticity estimate, so this should be understood as Zammit’s market assessment rather than a measured forecast.

Cloud is an alternative to evaluate, not an escape hatch

Higher hardware costs or uncertain delivery can lead some organizations to compare on-premises infrastructure with public cloud, colocation or hosted private infrastructure. But cloud providers also buy memory, storage and compute equipment, so cloud pricing may face indirect pressure too. Zammit raised that possibility; it is not evidence that cloud prices will rise uniformly or on a particular schedule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A sound comparison should model three- to five-year total cost, deployment timing, data sovereignty, latency and performance, accelerator availability, power and cooling, staffing, contract escalation, egress and migration costs, and residual hardware value. Cloud can reduce upfront procurement and operational burdens for some workloads, while sustained high utilization, lock-in or data movement can change the economics.

What the episode suggests about distribution strategy

Supply volatility can make scale, vendor relationships, credit capacity and integration capability more valuable. It can also make the costs of inventory and working capital more significant. Zammit has argued that the pressure could accelerate existing industry consolidation, but the interview does not establish that consolidation is inevitable or that larger distributors are insulated from risk.

TD SYNNEX’s broader priorities, as Zammit described them, include expansion in underpenetrated high-growth markets, particularly parts of Asia-Pacific and Japan, Latin America and Eastern Europe; building AI fluency internally and among partners; and growing its PartnerFirst digital portal. PartnerFirst is a partner-oriented resource, not an open consumer sign-up destination. The company also describes Destination AI as an AI-enablement framework and announced expanded HPE Unleash AI offerings in June 2026. Details are in its announcement.

For financial context, TD SYNNEX reported fiscal 2026 second-quarter revenue of $19.6 billion and non-GAAP gross billings of $28.9 billion for the quarter ended May 31, 2026; revenue was up 31.0% year over year. Those company results provide scale context, not evidence that a particular partner has access to the same inventory, terms or financing. See the official results.
