In January 2025, T-Mobile named Srinivasan “Srini” Gopalan its chief operating officer, putting technology, digital transformation and the company’s Consumer and Business groups under his remit. In a separate Seattle tech move, former Algorithmia co-founders Kenny Daniel and Diego Oppenheimer teamed up at Hyperparam, a startup focused on inspecting and curating large datasets for AI development. Gopalan later became T-Mobile’s president and CEO, effective November 1, 2025; the two developments were linked as regional tech news, not as related business ventures.
Updated context: T-Mobile announced Gopalan’s COO appointment on January 27, 2025, with the role effective March 1. He succeeded Mike Sievert as president and CEO on November 1, 2025.
T-Mobile gave Gopalan a broad operating brief
When T-Mobile announced the appointment, it said Gopalan would report directly to then-CEO Mike Sievert. His responsibilities covered technology initiatives and go-to-market operations across the company’s Consumer and Business groups, alongside work on advanced 5G and next-generation mobile networks. T-Mobile described the broader aim as continuing its transformation toward a more data-informed, AI-enabled and digitally focused company. Those are the company’s stated priorities, not independent proof of specific results. T-Mobile’s announcement set out the role and reporting structure.
The reporting lines help explain why this was more than a conventional operations appointment. T-Mobile said Consumer Group President Jon Freier, Business Group President Callie Field, EVP of Transformation and Chief Information and Digital Officer Nestor Cano, and Technology President Ulf Ewaldsson would report to Gopalan. That put customer-facing business units, technology and digital-transformation leadership within one executive’s span. The company framed the arrangement as a way to connect technology work with commercial execution and customer experience; it did not cite a crisis or performance problem as the reason for the move.

A telecom executive with experience across markets
Immediately before joining T-Mobile’s US leadership team as COO, Gopalan was managing director of Telekom Deutschland GmbH, Deutsche Telekom’s German operating company. His career also included senior roles at Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, T-Mobile UK, Deutsche Telekom and Capital One. T-Mobile highlighted his experience in telecommunications, technology, operations and digital transformation.
He was not simply an internal executive promoted from an operating role at T-Mobile US: he had also served on the company’s board. T-Mobile’s 2025 proxy statement records his board service from August 2022 to February 2025. The combination of board familiarity and leadership experience at Deutsche Telekom’s German business gave him both company-level context and experience running a major telecom operation. T-Mobile’s proxy statement provides the board-service dates and executive background.

From COO to CEO
The COO appointment became an important step in a subsequent leadership transition. On September 19, 2025, T-Mobile announced that Gopalan would succeed Sievert as president and CEO, effective November 1, 2025. Sievert moved to the vice-chairman role. T-Mobile’s announcement described Gopalan’s COO tenure and leadership of Technology, Consumer and Business. The company cited succession planning and his leadership; the available information does not establish that one particular result as COO caused the CEO appointment. Algorithmia co-founders moved into AI data tooling
The second development was separate from T-Mobile’s management news. Kenny Daniel and Diego Oppenheimer, co-founders of Seattle machine-learning software company Algorithmia, teamed up again at Hyperparam. GeekWire identified Daniel as Hyperparam’s founder and Oppenheimer as its interim head of product. The startup’s reported focus was software for inspecting, filtering and annotating very large datasets.
Daniel described the motivating problem as the difficulty of examining large open datasets used to train AI models, including data stored in Parquet format. Hyperparam’s stated direction was therefore data exploration and curation—not building another general-purpose AI model. GeekWire’s report and Daniel’s announcement describe the roles and the problem the founders were addressing.

DataRobot acquired Algorithmia in 2021. The founders’ return to a related area of machine-learning infrastructure is a reunion, not evidence that Hyperparam was an Algorithmia spinout or corporate successor. Algorithmia’s work centered on deploying and operating machine-learning algorithms; Hyperparam’s reported focus sat closer to the data layer, where teams need to examine and prepare material used to train models. That makes the move notable against the backdrop of generative AI, where dataset visibility and curation are consequential development tasks. It does not, by itself, demonstrate that Hyperparam had customers, funding, a generally available product or commercial traction.

There was additional founder and adviser context. Oppenheimer was also a co-founder and board member of Guardrails AI, which describes its work as making generative AI safer, more secure and reliable. After Algorithmia’s acquisition, both founders had brief roles at Numbers Station AI, and Daniel spent six months as an entrepreneur-in-residence at Madrona Venture Group. Hyperparam’s reported advisers included Thomas Dohmke, Jeffrey Heer and Clem Delangue. These affiliations help place the founders in the Seattle AI ecosystem, but do not establish Hyperparam’s product maturity or market adoption.

Why the two moves were grouped together
The common thread was geography and timing: both were notable Pacific Northwest technology developments reported in January 2025. Their business implications were different. T-Mobile’s appointment placed a senior executive over interconnected telecom functions—network technology, digital transformation and the company’s consumer and business operations. Hyperparam brought experienced machine-learning founders back together around tools for exploring and curating training data.
For T-Mobile, the appointment was part of the leadership path that led to Gopalan’s later move into the CEO role. For Hyperparam, the available reporting supports a focused description of a new venture and its intended data-tooling problem, not claims about launch, financing or commercial success.
