T-Mobile doubled the annual data allowance in Project 10Million from 100GB to 200GB for qualifying K–12 student households. The enhanced offer took effect September 26, 2024, keeps the direct-family program at five years, and adds an optional 10GB data pass for $10 after the included allowance is used.
What changed in Project 10Million
T-Mobile announced the enhancement on September 25, 2024. Under the consumer offer, qualifying households receive 200GB of mobile data each year for five years instead of the former 100GB allowance. Existing participants were promised additional data for the remainder of their own five-year period, rather than a new five-year term.

The larger allowance should give a household more educational connectivity before service is interrupted, but it does not provide 200GB per month or unlimited home broadband.
District arrangements can differ. T-Mobile says districts with the greatest needs may become eligible for as much as 200GB for students, but a district-issued plan is not necessarily identical to the direct-to-family offer.

Who may qualify
The direct offer is aimed at qualifying households with kindergarten through 12th-grade students. T-Mobile’s consumer materials identify participation in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) as an eligibility signal. That does not mean every family with financial difficulty automatically qualifies, nor does enrollment at an NSLP-eligible school alone guarantee direct service without the required application or verification.
School districts can also apply and distribute connectivity under district-specific plans. A family should check the current enrollment process on T-Mobile’s Project 10Million page or ask its district which route is available. “At-risk students” is useful shorthand for the program’s mission, not a single nationwide legal eligibility category.
What “free” includes—and what it does not
For eligible student households, T-Mobile presents the hotspot and qualifying connectivity as free under Project 10Million. The original launch also offered laptops and tablets at cost; current materials describe devices as available at cost or through subsidized arrangements, not universally free.

- The $10 charge applies only if a participant chooses the additional 10GB pass after reaching the included limit.
- A family may still need to supply a laptop or tablet, depending on its enrollment arrangement.
- This is not a promise of unlimited residential broadband for every qualifying household.
T-Mobile’s original initiative, announced in 2019 and launched September 3, 2020, was described as a $10.7 billion commitment to connect up to 10 million underserved student households. The launch package included free hotspots and high-speed data plus access to devices at cost.
How far can 200GB go?
There is no responsible way to convert the allowance into a guaranteed number of school hours. Consumption depends on the hotspot configuration, the devices connected, video quality, automatic updates, and whether several people share the connection.
Usually modest use
Web research, email, learning-management systems, online forms, document editing and submitting assignments generally use much less data than continuous video. For a student who mainly reads, writes and uploads small files, doubling the allowance creates meaningful additional headroom.

Fastest ways to use the allowance
- Live video classes and frequent video conferencing
- YouTube and other video lessons at high resolution
- Streaming entertainment
- Online gaming and game downloads
- Cloud-photo backups and large file synchronization
- Operating-system, application and game updates
- Several simultaneous users on the hotspot
Families should treat 200GB as an annual educational connectivity budget. Turning down video resolution, pausing nonessential backups, scheduling updates on another connection and separating entertainment use from schoolwork can help preserve it. Coverage and network congestion can also affect the usefulness of a hotspot even when data remains.

The documented extension is a 10GB pass costing $10. It is intended for a participant who has exhausted the included annual allowance. The official program page does not establish whether the pass renews automatically, whether unused pass data rolls over or exactly when it expires, so those rules should be confirmed in the current account or enrollment interface before purchase.
A single pass may bridge a short period of assignments. Repeatedly buying passes indicates that the household’s needs may exceed the program’s design and that fixed broadband, a district plan or another subsidized option could be more economical.

Districts and community partnerships
Districts can apply for service and manage distribution, verification and support themselves. Their plans may have different data quantities, restrictions and terms from direct family enrollment. T-Mobile also announced work with Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Common to reach more students and families.
Those partnerships expand outreach; they do not turn every participant in a club or community program into an automatically eligible Project 10Million customer. The available service still depends on the applicable enrollment route and current terms.
How large is the program?
T-Mobile reported that Project 10Million had connected more than 6 million students by September 2024. Later company materials reported more than 6.3 million students and nearly $7.3 billion in free and subsidized technology and service. These are company-reported figures, not an independently audited count of unique students with continuously active service.

The company’s stated goal remains reaching up to 10 million eligible students or households, with the wording varying by announcement.
When Project 10Million is a good fit
- A qualifying family lacks affordable fixed internet and mainly needs homework access.
- The home has usable T-Mobile coverage.
- Usage centers on portals, research, email, documents and occasional video.
- A hotspot can serve the household’s available devices without exhausting the annual allowance.
When to consider another option
School-district connectivity
A district that already distributes hotspots may offer different data amounts, support or even an unlimited arrangement. District enrollment can be easier for families because the school handles verification and distribution.
Fixed broadband
Cable, fiber or other fixed services are usually a better fit for multiple students, frequent video classes, large downloads and substantial streaming. They bring recurring bills, equipment or installation requirements and service-area limits.
Libraries and public Wi-Fi
These can cover occasional assignments at no charge, but they are a poor substitute when students need evening access, private video calls or simultaneous household use.
Other wireless or public-benefit programs
Another carrier may work better where its local coverage is stronger. Federal and state broadband programs should be checked separately because eligibility and availability change; do not assume older programs, including expired Affordable Connectivity Program terms, are still open.
Practical checks before enrolling
- Open T-Mobile’s current Project 10Million information page and review the live eligibility and enrollment requirements.
- Confirm whether you are applying directly as an NSLP-connected K–12 household or through a participating school district.
- Check T-Mobile coverage at the home address and ask how the hotspot, supported devices and battery will work for your household.
- Determine whether the data allowance is assigned per household, student, line or device under your specific enrollment terms; do not infer this from the headline offer.
- Plan for a computer or tablet if the household does not already have a suitable school device.
- Ask about the current 10GB-pass expiration, renewal and rollover rules before relying on it as a recurring solution.
The central improvement is straightforward: eligible families receive twice the former annual data allowance. Its value depends on eligibility, T-Mobile coverage and disciplined use of a shared 200GB-per-year pool—not on an assumption that Project 10Million replaces unlimited home internet.
