SushiSwap, now generally branded as Sushi, is a non-custodial decentralized exchange (DEX): you connect your own wallet, choose a network and token pair, and authorize transactions yourself. It uses liquidity pools rather than a conventional order book. That gives you direct access to on-chain markets, but also means you are responsible for checking token authenticity, fees, execution terms, and wallet security.

For a first trade, start at sushi.com/swap, confirm the network, hold its native gas token, and review the quote before signing. A Sushi interface being available on a network does not guarantee that every product, token, route, or pool is available or liquid there.

What SushiSwap is today

SushiSwap is the name many users still recognize; the project is now generally branded as Sushi. Its core exchange is an automated market maker (AMM). Instead of matching buyers and sellers through a centralized order book, an AMM routes trades through pools of tokens held in smart contracts.

Sushi is non-custodial in the sense that you connect a wallet you control and submit transactions on a blockchain; Sushi does not hold your funds in a conventional exchange account. That does not make every part of the experience decentralized or risk-free: the website, wallet software, routing services, bridges, token contracts, and governance can each introduce dependencies or risks. A completed on-chain transaction generally cannot be reversed by customer support.

The ecosystem includes same-chain swaps, V2 pools, V3 concentrated-liquidity pools, liquidity provision, and SushiXSwap cross-chain swaps, alongside developer tools and other interface features. Features and liquidity vary by network and can change. Rather than relying on an old chain list, use the live network selector and verify that the specific token pair or feature is available. Sushi’s network guidance also cautions that deployments, contracts, liquidity, and features differ by chain.

Official entry points include Sushi, the same-chain swap, cross-chain swap, pools, and documentation. Bookmark the domain rather than following a search ad or unsolicited link.

How the pools work—and what your quote means

V2: the simpler pool model

In a typical V2 pool, liquidity providers deposit two assets. A trader swaps against the pool, changing the quantities of those assets. The classic constant-product model is written as x × y = k: as one token is removed, the relative pool price changes. A trade that is large compared with available liquidity usually moves the price more than a small trade. Sushi explains this relationship in its price-impact guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

V2 liquidity is generally available across the full price curve, which can be easier to understand and manage than a chosen range. The trade-off is that capital is not concentrated around the market price. V2 providers still face price divergence, impermanent loss, token risk, and smart-contract risk.

V3: liquidity concentrated in a range

In V3, a liquidity provider chooses a price range for a position. Concentrating capital near the current price can make it more capital-efficient while the market remains inside that range. If the price moves outside it, the position can become inactive and stop earning swap fees until the market returns or the provider adjusts the position. Narrower ranges require more monitoring and can go out of range more readily.

Do not assume every V3 position behaves like a simple fungible V2 LP token: position representation and management depend on the implementation and interface. Sushi’s V3 tutorial describes selecting a range, approving tokens, previewing, adding liquidity, and monitoring the position. A V3 option shown for one chain does not establish availability on every chain.

Four terms not to confuse

  • Price impact is the movement in the pool price caused by your trade size relative to liquidity.
  • Slippage tolerance is the maximum execution deterioration you accept between submitting a swap and its execution. It is not a promised price. A low setting can cause a transaction to revert; a high setting allows a worse result.
  • Gas is the blockchain transaction fee, paid to the network rather than necessarily to Sushi. Token approval can require its own transaction and gas.
  • Other fees can include pool or protocol fees, an interface or routing fee, bridge-provider charges, or a token’s own transfer tax. Which apply depends on the product, network, route, and token.

Do not assume a quoted fee rate is universal. A sampled Sushi interface has displayed a 0.35% fee, but that is not a general rate for every pool, chain, route, or product; inspect the current transaction details. SushiXSwap separately documents a standardized 0.25% UI fee for its cross-chain product, which should not be confused with a same-chain pool fee. See the SushiXSwap FAQ.

Before your first swap

  • A self-custody wallet compatible with the network you intend to use.
  • The token you want to sell, on that same network.
  • Enough of the network’s native gas currency for approval and swap transactions, while leaving a balance for any follow-up transaction. Examples include ETH on Ethereum, POL on Polygon under current conventions, and the relevant native gas currency on other networks; confirm the chain’s current requirements.
  • The correct network selected both in the wallet and Sushi.
  • A verified contract address for any unfamiliar token. A ticker, name, or logo alone is not proof of authenticity.
  • A block explorer for checking transaction status. Examples include Etherscan, Arbiscan, Polygonscan, and BaseScan.

Sushi’s swap instructions likewise emphasize checking the network and maintaining enough native gas currency. If your assets are on a different chain, you may need to bridge them first or use a cross-chain route; those are different operations with additional risks.

How to make a same-chain swap

  1. Open sushi.com/swap from the official domain. Choose the swap entry point if prompted.
  2. Connect your wallet and check that both the wallet and Sushi show the network you intend to use.
  3. Select the token you are selling and the token you want to receive. For an unfamiliar asset, use a contract address verified through the project’s official source and a block explorer. Permissionless pools mean a token appearing in a search result is not an endorsement.
  4. Enter the trade amount. Leave enough gas currency for the transaction and any required approval.
  5. Read the quote before signing: expected amount, minimum received, price impact, slippage tolerance, fees, gas estimate, and route or routing source. Stop if an unfamiliar token, unexpectedly high price impact, or unexpectedly permissive minimum gives you pause.
  6. If prompted, approve the token spend. Approval is a separate on-chain permission, often a separate transaction and gas charge. Check which contract is requesting permission and the amount.
  7. Confirm the swap details in your wallet, then sign only if they match what you intended.
  8. Wait for confirmation and check the transaction hash in the appropriate block explorer. If the received token does not appear in your wallet, confirm success and network first; you may need to add the verified token contract manually.

A wallet connection lets the interface read wallet information; it does not mean you should accept every later signature or transaction. Review each wallet prompt independently.

Set slippage without guessing

For ordinary liquid pairs, the safest starting point is generally the interface’s automatic setting. Sushi’s instructions describe changing from Auto to Custom through the settings gear, but no single tolerance is right for every pool or token. A lower tolerance limits the execution deterioration you accept but may cause a revert if the market moves before execution. A higher tolerance can make execution more likely while allowing you to receive less.

Investigate an unusually high suggested tolerance instead of treating it as a hurdle to clear. Low liquidity, price movement, or a token transfer tax can affect execution; higher slippage does not make an unattractive trade better. Some tax or fee-on-transfer tokens require tolerance that reflects both ordinary slippage and the tax. Sushi’s Sonic interface illustrates how a 0.5% setting plus a 5% token tax can produce a 5.5% total figure; this is an example, not a standard Sushi fee. See Sushi’s slippage settings guidance and its explanation of slippage versus price impact.

Do not casually enable Expert Mode or an equivalent bypass. Sushi warns that it can bypass confirmation messages and permit trades at higher slippage. If you do not understand why a trade needs a setting or bypass, do not sign it.

Providing liquidity: a different risk from swapping

Liquidity provision is not simply another way to hold tokens. You deposit assets into a pool so traders can use them, and your position’s value and fee income change with trading activity, token prices, and (for V3) whether the position is in range.

  1. Open Sushi Pools and choose the intended network.
  2. Choose a pool and verify both token contract addresses, the pool type, and available liquidity and activity.
  3. For V3, review the fee tier and select a price range you understand. A full-range option may be available, but the interface’s current choices depend on the network and pool.
  4. Review the token amounts or ratio, position preview, range, fees, and gas. Approve each token if required, then add liquidity.
  5. Monitor the position. Collecting fees, adjusting a range, adding funds, or removing liquidity may require further transactions and gas.

V2 may be simpler because its liquidity is generally full-range; V3 may use capital more efficiently in range, but can stop earning swap fees when out of range and needs more active management. Neither is universally better.

Liquidity providers face impermanent loss: when token prices diverge, the value of the pool position can be lower than simply holding the same assets outside the pool. The loss may become realized when liquidity is removed, and fees do not guarantee that it will be offset. Add smart-contract and pool-specific token risks, low-volume risk, V3 range inactivity, rebalancing gas, and potential changes or expiry in reward emissions. A displayed APR or APY is an estimate based on assumptions or past activity, not guaranteed income; distinguish trading-fee returns from incentive rewards.

Sushi announced that V3 single-sided “Zap Mode” was supported on selected chains including Katana, Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, and BNB Smart Chain. That is a dated feature announcement, not a promise the option is available for every pool or chain; confirm in the live interface. See the announcement.

Same-chain swaps versus SushiXSwap

A same-chain swap exchanges assets on one network. A bridge transfers value between networks. A cross-chain swap such as SushiXSwap combines routing, bridging or messaging, and execution on the destination network. Sushi says SushiXSwap selects routes based on factors including final amount, speed, and network fees, and documents integrations such as Hop, Celer, Across, Circle CCTP, Stargate V2, Mayan, and Relay. Providers and routes can change; an aggregator does not remove the underlying bridge or messaging risk.

Before signing a cross-chain transaction, verify the source and destination networks, receiving address, destination token contract and representation, amount after fees, and route. The destination asset may be wrapped, canonical, or chain-specific. The source transaction can succeed while a destination step is delayed or fails; completion time and fees vary. Save both source and destination transaction hashes. A route with the highest quoted return is not automatically the safest.

SushiXSwap’s documented 0.25% UI fee is separate from any network, bridge-provider, or token charges. Use the live quote and the official FAQ for current product details.

SUSHI, governance, and what not to assume

SUSHI is Sushi’s ecosystem token, but the fact that a token has existed or appeared in historical Sushi materials does not establish its current voting rights, staking options, fee share, emissions, or supply policy. Sushi’s current documentation links to Sushinomics and governance materials; consult those current terms and the relevant contract and chain before making a decision. Do not assume that merely holding SUSHI grants voting power, that a historical xSUSHI or staking description remains active, or that rewards are guaranteed. The older whitepaper can provide historical context, but is not sufficient evidence of current economic rights.

Security checklist before signing

  • Use the official Sushi domain and bookmark it. Do not follow sponsored search results, unsolicited links, or social-media “support” accounts.
  • Never enter your seed phrase into a website or share it with support. A legitimate swap does not require it.
  • Verify the chain, token contract, recipient, spend amount, and transaction details in your wallet.
  • Check unfamiliar token addresses against the project’s official source and a reputable block explorer. Permissionless pools can include fraudulent, restricted, or illiquid tokens.
  • Grant only permissions you understand. Avoid unlimited approval for an unknown token or contract; review and revoke stale approvals through a reputable approval-management service when appropriate.
  • Consider a hardware wallet for material balances, but remember it cannot prevent phishing, malicious approvals, or a mistaken transaction you authorize.
  • For an unfamiliar route or token, consider a small test transaction first. It costs additional gas and does not eliminate risk.

Troubleshooting

What you see What to check and do
Swap reverted or failed Open the transaction in the block explorer. A reverted transaction generally leaves the traded funds in the wallet, but gas is usually still consumed. Check network, gas balance, approval, liquidity, price movement, and whether the token has a tax or transfer restriction. Recheck the route and price impact; try a smaller amount or a more liquid route if appropriate. Do not repeatedly raise slippage without understanding the cause.
Transaction is pending Check its status in the explorer and avoid submitting a duplicate swap. Wallet replacement or nonce and gas adjustments require understanding how that wallet handles pending transactions. Never trust unsolicited help requesting keys or seed phrases.
Swap succeeded but token is missing from wallet display Confirm the transaction succeeded and that the wallet is on the destination network. Add the token using its verified contract address. Check whether you received a wrapped or chain-specific representation; a missing balance display alone does not prove funds are gone.
Approval prompt appears unexpectedly Do not sign until you confirm which token and spender contract are involved and whether the permission amount is expected. Cancel if unclear; a swap does not justify approving an unrelated contract.
Cross-chain transfer is incomplete Check the source transaction, route provider, destination network, and destination transaction status. Preserve both hashes and contact only the provider through its official support channel. Do not send more funds to a stranger claiming to recover the transfer.
V3 liquidity stops earning fees Check whether the market price moved outside your selected range. Out-of-range liquidity can be inactive until the price returns or you adjust the position; an adjustment or removal can cost gas and change your exposure.

When Sushi is—and is not—a good fit

Sushi may suit you when the pair has meaningful liquidity on a network you can use, you can fund its gas costs, and you understand wallet transactions. It may also be relevant if you specifically want to use a Sushi pool or accept the added complexity of SushiXSwap.

Consider another venue or do not trade if the pair is shallow, price impact is high, the token contract is unverified or has unusual restrictions, or gas outweighs the trade’s likely benefit. If you need fiat funding, custody, chargebacks, or a support team able to reverse account transactions, a self-custody DEX may be a poor fit. Compare the actual pair and route: Uniswap may have deeper liquidity for a particular market; Curve is often considered for stable or correlated assets; aggregators such as 1inch, Matcha, Paraswap, or Odos may route across venues. Availability and fees vary, and no brand is universally cheaper or safer. Centralized exchanges offer a different custody and account model, with their own counterparty, withdrawal, geographic, and account risks.

Before you sign, ask: Is this the real site? Is the network correct? Is the token contract verified? Do I have enough gas? Is price impact acceptable? Do I understand slippage and every fee? Is this same-chain or cross-chain? Does the minimum received make sense? If any answer is unclear, stop rather than approve or sign.
