On August 28, 2019, Supplyframe announced that it had entered into a definitive agreement to acquire SamacSys, a UK-based provider of electronic-component design data. SamacSys supplied schematic symbols, PCB footprints and 3D models for use in electronic design automation (ECAD) tools. The announcement said founder Alex MacDougall and SamacSys’s London-based employees would join Supplyframe.
The announcement establishes an agreement to acquire, but the cited report does not document a closing date or transaction price. It framed the deal as a way to add component-design data to Supplyframe’s existing component-search, supply-chain and engineering-community businesses—not as proof that every product was immediately integrated. (EE Times, August 28, 2019)
What Supplyframe announced
Supplyframe said it had reached a definitive agreement to acquire SamacSys on August 28, 2019. SamacSys was described as a provider of electronic-component CAD data, including schematic symbols, PCB footprints and component 3D models. The announcement identified Alex MacDougall as SamacSys’s founder and CEO and said he and the company’s London-based employees would join Supplyframe.
The wording matters: the available announcement reports an agreement, not a separately documented closing. It does not state a purchase price, valuation or closing date. Those details should not be inferred from the headline or announcement date.

What SamacSys’s ECAD data does
In this context, “CAD models” does not mean only mechanical 3D files. A component entry used in PCB design can include several related elements:
- Schematic symbol: the logical representation placed in a circuit diagram, with pins that must correspond to the component’s electrical connections.
- PCB footprint: the pad and outline pattern used to place and manufacture the part on a printed-circuit board.
- 3D model: a visual and mechanical representation that can help check board layout, component height and enclosure clearance.
- Associated metadata: information such as manufacturer part number, pin mapping and datasheet references, depending on the model and workflow.
These pieces must agree. A convincing 3D rendering does not establish that the footprint dimensions or pin numbering are correct. SamacSys promoted its libraries as a way to reduce manual library creation and offered workflows involving its Library Loader and supported ECAD environments. Its materials also described accessing CAD data through manufacturer and distributor sites. (SamacSys Library Loader and library workflow)
Why the acquisition fit Supplyframe
Supplyframe’s 2019 description of its business included electronic-component search engines, supply-chain tools, online engineering communities and SaaS applications such as Supplyframe Enterprise, Findchips Pro, Polydyne, QuoteFX, BuyManager and BOM2buy. SamacSys added data used earlier in the design process: the symbols and footprints that let an engineer put a selected component into a schematic and PCB layout.

The strategic logic was a potential connection between component discovery and implementation: find a part, inspect its technical and supply information, obtain its ECAD data, use it in a design, and carry it into a bill of materials and sourcing workflow. That is a reasonable interpretation of the businesses described in the announcement, not evidence that all those steps were integrated into one product immediately after the deal.
Supplyframe said its engineering community numbered about seven million at the time. That is a figure attributed to the 2019 announcement, not a current user count or an independently audited measure. The announcement also described SamacSys as serving users in more than 180 countries; that, too, should be understood as a company description rather than an audited reach metric. (EE Times report)
What engineers could gain—and what they still had to check
A ready-made library entry can spare a designer from interpreting a datasheet and drawing every symbol and pad pattern by hand. SamacSys’s tools aimed to make component data easier to find and bring into an ECAD workflow. Its materials described Library Loader, ECAD Part Wizard, ECAD Symbol Editor and LivePartLibrary; LivePartLibrary was presented as a way to manage component libraries and connect them with design and business systems. The existence of those product descriptions does not establish their present availability, pricing or exact post-acquisition status. (SamacSys LivePartLibrary information)

Library downloads are a starting point, not design approval. Before using a model in a production design, compare it with the manufacturer’s current datasheet and recommended land pattern. Check:

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Manufacturer part number, package variant and revision.
- Symbol pin names and numbers against the datasheet.
- Footprint pad numbering, dimensions, polarity and pin-one marking.
- Thermal-pad requirements, courtyard and assembly information.
- 3D model orientation, height and mechanical clearances.
- Whether the file is manufacturer-originated, third-party-created, distributor-hosted, community-contributed or converted from another format.
Extra care is warranted for safety-critical, high-current, high-speed, RF, thermal or mechanically constrained designs. A model described as verified or compliant is still a vendor claim unless its provenance and validation are clear, and it does not remove the design team’s responsibility to review the data.
Product continuity: what can be said
Later SamacSys web materials continued to describe a branded product ecosystem that included component libraries, Library Loader, ECAD Part Wizard, ECAD Symbol Editor and LivePartLibrary. Some materials presented individual tools or downloads as free, while LivePartLibrary was positioned for managed or team use. Those pages support saying that SamacSys-branded product material remained identifiable; they do not establish which products were rebranded, merged, retired or technically integrated into Supplyframe, or whether the original corporate structure continued unchanged.

Likewise, a tool’s stated support for multiple ECAD environments does not guarantee a universal one-click import. Workflows can involve file conversion, loader software, import settings, library-path configuration or manual cleanup. SamacSys’s tool-specific instructions, including its Quadcept library workflow, illustrate why compatibility should be checked for the particular tool and version.
What the announcement left unanswered
The cited announcement did not disclose the transaction’s price or valuation, SamacSys’s financial performance, a closing date, an integration timetable, or a product roadmap. It also did not specify changes to customer contracts or licensing, confirm that every SamacSys product was included, or announce exclusive relationships with EDA vendors or distributors. The available evidence therefore supports a discussion of strategic intent, but not claims about financial impact or completed technical integration.
How SamacSys-style libraries compare with other sources
Engineers evaluating component data can choose among several kinds of library source. Their differences are less about the abstract promise of a model and more about provenance, format coverage, import workflow and organizational control.

- Organized for Repeatable Learning: Pre-soldered modules, a solderless breadboard, storage case and small-parts box reduce setup time and keep sensors, LEDs, ICs, wires and other components easy to find between projects
- Manufacturer libraries: Often the clearest starting point when the component maker provides a reference model and recommended land pattern. Downloads and formats vary by manufacturer, and models still need review.
- Distributor-hosted libraries: Convenient when CAD data appears alongside price, stock and datasheets. Availability, file format and provenance can vary by distributor; a downloadable model does not establish that a part is in stock or current.
- SamacSys workflows: Associated with Library Loader and access through manufacturer and distributor pages, alongside its library-management products. Confirm the exact tool support and import steps for a project.
- Ultra Librarian: Markets a large library of symbols, footprints and 3D models, broad CAD-format support and manufacturer-linked content. Its model-count and verification statements are vendor claims; teams should still validate individual entries. (Ultra Librarian)
- SnapMagic Search, formerly SnapEDA: Offers a searchable component library, tool integrations and a request service for missing models. Its current service terms and prices should be checked directly because they can change. (SnapMagic CAD-model tools)
- Native EDA libraries: Usually offer the smoothest workflow inside one design platform, but may have narrower coverage or updates that do not match a particular component’s latest documentation.
For a single prototype, convenient downloads may be enough after review. An organization managing approved components across teams may instead need controlled revisions, naming conventions, provenance records, internal ownership of edits, audit trails and links to PLM, PDM or ERP systems. SamacSys described LivePartLibrary in terms of managed library capabilities, but the cited material does not establish its current availability or pricing.
Why the deal mattered
The 2019 agreement represented Supplyframe’s effort to extend its component-information and sourcing footprint into design implementation. SamacSys brought ECAD content that could connect a search for a component with the practical work of placing it in a schematic and board. The long-term significance depends on what happened after the announcement—especially product integration, data provenance and library governance—but those outcomes cannot be established from the announcement alone.
