Submittable announced on August 8, 2024, that it acquired WizeHive, bringing WizeHive’s grants software and its recently acquired Bright Funds and WeHero brands into one social-impact technology company. A Submittable spokesperson later confirmed to GeekWire that 40 employees across both companies were laid off as part of the integration. GeekWire reported a combined post-deal workforce of 302 people. The purchase price and the breakdown of the job cuts were not disclosed.
What Submittable bought
Missoula, Montana-based Submittable provides software for collecting applications and managing submissions, grants and other social-impact programs. WizeHive, founded in 2008 and based near Philadelphia, supplies cloud tools for grants, scholarships, fellowships, awards and related application workflows.
The transaction also included two companies WizeHive had recently acquired:
- Bright Funds: employee giving and volunteering software.
- WeHero: in-person, hybrid and remote volunteer experiences.
Submittable described the combination as bringing together four social-impact brands. In practical terms, the deal links grantmaking and application administration with workplace donations and volunteering.

Neither Submittable nor the published reports disclosed the financial terms, transaction structure or valuation.
Why the deal matters
The acquisition broadens Submittable beyond a primarily grants-and-submissions identity. The combined portfolio is intended to serve corporations, foundations, nonprofits and government entities that need to run grant programs, administer employee giving or organize volunteer activity.
There is a plausible product strategy here: a foundation using grants-management software could eventually consider employee-giving tools, while a corporate customer running a workplace-giving program could add grant administration. That cross-selling possibility is an analytical inference from the products involved, not a disclosed revenue forecast.
Submittable said the combined company would develop integrated grants-management, employee-giving and volunteering solutions. Its announcement also used expansive market-positioning language, but the available sources do not provide independent market-share data proving that the company is a dominant or market-leading vendor.

The layoffs: what is confirmed
GeekWire reported that a Submittable spokesperson confirmed 40 layoffs across Submittable and WizeHive. The company characterized the reductions as part of integration. GeekWire reported that 302 employees remained across the combined business after the cuts.
The public record does not say:
- how many affected employees came from each company;
- which departments, offices or seniority levels were affected;
- what severance or benefit arrangements were offered; or
- whether the reductions were concentrated in engineering, sales, support, administration or another function.
It would therefore be inaccurate to say that WizeHive employees alone were laid off, or to attribute the cuts to financial distress without additional evidence. The 40-person figure also should not be converted into a precise percentage because comparable pre-deal headcounts for both companies were not disclosed.
What customers were told
In its customer communication, Submittable said active subscriptions and existing contracts would be honored and that there would be no immediate impact on current programs. It said customers would receive information as the integration developed and would eventually be directed toward more integrated solutions.

What the acquisition could mean for customers
Contract continuity
Customers should review renewal dates, termination rights, service-level commitments, data-processing terms and any change-of-control language. “Existing contracts honored” does not answer what happens after a contract expires.
Migration and data
If overlapping grants products are consolidated, customers may eventually face data mapping, changed record identifiers, reporting differences or a new permissions model. Before agreeing to a migration, request export formats, a documented timeline, sandbox access, validation procedures and a rollback plan.
Product overlap
Submittable and WizeHive both operate in grants-related workflows. Customers should ask which roadmap will govern overlapping features, whether legacy integrations will be maintained and how support responsibilities will be assigned.

Support capacity
Layoffs during an integration can make support and implementation capacity a reasonable diligence question, but no source identifies the functions that were cut or establishes any decline in service. Ask for named account contacts, escalation procedures and service-response commitments rather than assuming an outcome.

Integration was not immediate
Submittable’s current sign-in page continues to list separate access points for Submittable, Bright Funds and WizeHive’s Zengine product. That is evidence that customers still encountered multiple product experiences in the latest official information reviewed. It does not establish the companies’ full legal structure or prove that the underlying technology remained entirely separate.
Be careful with the companies’ scale figures
Different Submittable materials cite different measures of scale. The August 2024 announcement said the combined customer base was nearly 6,000 foundations, corporations and public entities running more than 35,000 programs and distributing more than $1.6 billion in the prior year. A Business Wire company description cited 165,000 programs and more than 25 million applications, while a later 2024 review cited nearly 30,000 programs, more than 1.2 million applicants and more than $10 billion in funds managed during 2024.
Those figures likely reflect different products, definitions or time periods. They should not be added together or treated as a single market-size estimate. Submittable also raised $47 million in 2022, according to GeekWire; that historical financing is not the acquisition price or evidence of how this transaction was funded.
What remains unknown
- Purchase price and whether consideration was cash, stock, debt or a combination.
- WizeHive’s revenue, valuation, profitability and customer concentration.
- The exact layoff, severance and geographic breakdown.
- Whether any products will be retired, renamed or fully merged.
- The technical-integration timetable and migration obligations.
- Future renewal pricing and contract changes after current agreements expire.
- Changes to ownership stakes or investor positions.
For now, the deal is best understood as both a consolidation of grants-management capabilities and an expansion into corporate social responsibility and employee engagement. Its success will depend on whether Submittable can deliver that broader portfolio without imposing avoidable migration, pricing or support disruption on customers.
