Apple’s Stocks app is a free market-monitoring tool—not a brokerage. It lets you follow supported stocks, ETFs, mutual funds, indexes, currencies, charts, market statistics, and related business news across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple Vision Pro. You cannot treat it as a replacement for a brokerage account, trading platform, tax-lot tracker, or professional research terminal.
This guide explains how to use Apple Stocks, organize watchlists, interpret its data, sync it across devices, and decide when another finance app is a better fit.
What can you track in Apple Stocks?
Apple Stocks supports supported symbols for stocks, exchange-traded funds, mutual funds, indexes, and currencies. The U.S. App Store lists the app as free and identifies Apple as its developer. Availability, symbols, market coverage, quote timing, and displayed features can vary by region and instrument.
The app is designed for checking and organizing market information. A displayed quote is not necessarily the price at which you could execute a trade, and Apple does not present Stocks as a general-purpose brokerage app. For buying or selling securities, you need a suitable brokerage service.

Stocks is available on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro. Interface labels can differ by device and operating-system version; the current Apple guides cover iOS 26 and macOS Tahoe 26.
How to add a stock, ETF, fund, index, or currency
On iPhone:
- Open Stocks.
- Tap the Search button.
- Search for a ticker, company, fund, index, or currency.
- Tap the Add button beside the correct result.
- Tap the Close button.
Each symbol added to a custom watchlist is also added to the default My Symbols watchlist. Search results can include similarly named companies, multiple listings, ADRs, ETFs, indexes, or securities traded in different currencies. Before adding one, verify its full name, exchange or market, currency, and security type.
To show trading currencies, open a watchlist, tap More, choose Watchlist Shows, and select Show Currency. See Apple’s iPhone Stocks guide for the version-specific interface.

Create a watchlist
- Open Stocks.
- Tap More.
- Tap New Watchlist.
- Enter a name and tap Save.
Use the watchlist menu beside the current list name to switch lists. Practical lists include Core holdings, Research candidates, Broad-market funds, Income, Economic indicators, and Earnings calendar.
Remove, reorder, sort, or share symbols
- Remove: Swipe left on a symbol and tap Remove.
- Reorder: Touch and hold a symbol, then drag it. On the main watchlist, you can also use More → Edit Watchlist.
- Sort: Tap More → Sort Watchlist By, then choose a method and, where available, ascending or descending order. Select Manual to restore custom ordering.
- Display: Apple documents Price Change, Percentage Change, and Market Cap display options.
- Share: Swipe left on a symbol, tap Share, and choose an app such as Messages or Mail.
Important: My Symbols has special behavior. Removing a symbol from My Symbols also removes it from other watchlists. Removing it from a custom watchlist leaves it in My Symbols.

How to read a stock chart
Tap a symbol and select a chart range. Apple documents ranges including six months, one year, two years, five years, and ten years on iPhone. Touch and hold with one finger to inspect a point in time. Use two fingers to compare values at different points, then swipe through the information below the chart for additional statistics.
A chart shows historical movement; it does not forecast returns or tell you whether a security is safe, fairly valued, or suitable for you. Also distinguish a price chart from total return: a displayed price change may not reflect dividends, taxes, fees, or reinvestment. Always identify the selected period before interpreting a percentage change.
What the numbers mean

How to read business news in Stocks
From a symbol’s page, swipe upward to see related stories and tap a story to open it. Business news is provided through Apple News; Apple News+ subscribers may see News+ stories inside Stocks.
News availability is regional. Apple says Top Stories and Apple News stories are available in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, while stories in other countries are provided by Yahoo; publisher availability can change. Apple’s Mac Stocks guide also notes that Apple News and Apple News+ are not available in every country or region. Apple News+ is a separate subscription, not a feature included universally with the free Stocks app.

Use headlines as a starting point. Open the original article, check its publication date and market relevance, and look for missing context. Following only companies you own can also reinforce confirmation bias.
How to add Stocks widgets
On an iPhone Home Screen:
- Touch and hold the Home Screen until the apps jiggle.
- Tap Edit, then Add Widget.
- Swipe up and tap Stocks.
- Choose a widget type and size, then tap Add Widget.
- Tap Done.
Apple documents Watchlist and Symbol widgets for the Home Screen and Lock Screen. Touch and hold a widget and tap Edit Widget to change its symbol or watchlist, show the watchlist name, display more symbols or details, and control when news appears: In Off Hours, Always, or Never.
You can add several widgets for different symbols or lists. A widget is a glanceable display, not a guarantee of continuous updates. Verify the full quote inside Stocks before making a financial decision, especially after checking the market status, exchange, currency, and quote freshness. Lock Screen widgets may also reveal your financial interests to anyone who can see your phone.
How to sync Stocks across Apple devices
Apple says watchlists can be viewed on iPhone, iPad, and Mac when you use the same Apple Account and enable Stocks in iCloud.
iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings.
- Tap [your name].
- Tap iCloud.
- Tap See All beside Saved to iCloud.
- Turn on Stocks.
Mac running macOS 13 or later
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Click your name.
- Click iCloud.
- Turn on Stocks.
If lists do not match, confirm the same Apple Account is signed in everywhere, enable Stocks in iCloud on each device, check the internet connection, and remember that deleting from My Symbols can remove a symbol from other lists. Then close and reopen Stocks, restart the device, and install available operating-system updates. If rebuilding a damaged list, record its symbols first. Apple confirms watchlist synchronization, but not that every chart, news, or display preference behaves identically on every device.

Stocks with Siri and Apple Watch
Siri can handle quick requests such as:
- “How are the markets doing?”
- “What is Apple’s stock price?”
- “How is the Nikkei doing?”
Siri is useful for a glance, but verify the exact security, exchange, currency, quote time, and market status when precision matters. Apple Watch is similarly useful for quick market information and complications, but its small screen is not a substitute for full research or account management.
Earnings reports and calendar use
The current iPhone Stocks guide includes a feature for adding earnings reports to a calendar. The exact controls can vary with the iOS release and device, so use the current in-app option or Apple’s version-specific guide rather than relying on an older tap path.
Can you buy stocks in Apple’s Stocks app?
Stocks is primarily a monitoring and information app, not a general brokerage. Apple’s documented feature set centers on watchlists, quotes, charts, news, widgets, Siri, and cross-device viewing. It does not describe Stocks as a place to submit ordinary buy and sell orders.
For transactions, account positions, cash management, statements, and tax documents, use a brokerage app. Check that provider’s regulation, fees, account terms, market access, order types, and tax reporting before opening or using an account.

When Apple Stocks is enough—and when it is not

Apple Stocks is most compelling when simplicity, no separate installation, and Apple-device integration matter more than analytical depth. A brokerage app, charting service, or portfolio tracker can complement it rather than replace it.

Common problems and fixes
The wrong security was added
Search results may include multiple listings or instrument types. Remove it and confirm the company name, exchange, currency, and security type before adding the correct symbol.
A symbol disappeared from several watchlists
It may have been deleted from My Symbols. Apple treats that default list differently: deletion there can remove the symbol from other lists.
Watchlists do not sync
Check the Apple Account, iCloud’s Stocks setting, connectivity, and software updates on every device. Reopen Stocks or restart the device if synchronization appears delayed.

Apple describes displayed data as most recent prices and quotes but does not establish a universal real-time guarantee for every exchange, region, or instrument. Check the market session, timestamp or freshness information, and the original data provider. Do not assume a widget or after-hours figure is an executable price.
The chart percentage is confusing
Switching chart periods can change the displayed comparison. App Store reviewers have reported confusion about this behavior, but those reports are not confirmation of a software defect. Identify the selected range and compare the underlying dates before drawing conclusions.
News is missing
Apple News and Apple News+ availability varies by country or region. Publisher availability, subscription status, connectivity, and the selected symbol may all affect what appears.
The widget shows too little or the wrong information
Edit the widget to select the intended symbol or watchlist, use a larger size, or enable Show More Details. Confirm the full information inside Stocks before acting.

Use Apple Stocks for simple, convenient market monitoring: build focused watchlists, inspect historical charts, scan basic metrics, read relevant headlines, and glance at markets across Apple devices. Add a brokerage app when you need to trade, and add specialist research, charting, or portfolio software when your analysis requires more depth. Stocks is a useful first layer—but it should not be your only source of investment due diligence.
