Square Online is a strong low-cost choice for U.S. small businesses that already use Square POS or need a straightforward store for local pickup, delivery, or shipping. Its shared catalog and order tools make it easy to connect online and in-person sales. The trade-offs: Square Free charges 3.3% + $0.30 per online card payment, paid plans are billed per location, and the website builder is less flexible than ecommerce-first platforms.

In 2026, Square’s U.S. offering uses the consolidated Square Free, Square Plus, and Square Premium plans. Square support materials also call the site-building product Square Websites; “Square Online” remains common shorthand for its online store and ordering tools. Prices and features below are U.S.-specific and may differ for accounts on older plans.

Square Online at a glance

What you want to know Short answer
Best for Square POS users, local retailers, restaurants, and small sellers who value straightforward setup and connected in-person and online operations.
Starting price Square Free has no monthly software fee; online card processing is 3.3% + $0.30 per transaction.
Paid plans Plus is $49 per month per location; Premium is $149 per month per location. Both list a 2.9% + $0.30 standard online card rate.
Main strengths Shared catalog and inventory, online ordering, pickup and delivery options, and integration with the wider Square ecosystem.
Main drawbacks Per-location subscription costs, a higher Free-plan online rate, limits on customization and complex commerce, and meaningful restrictions on subscriptions.

Verdict: Start with Free if you are testing online sales or have modest volume. Consider Plus when its features or lower processing rate justify $49 per location. Premium makes sense only when the broader Square tools earn their keep; its standard online rate is no lower than Plus.

Square Online pricing in 2026

Square’s current U.S. plans bundle online selling with other Square capabilities. The plan fee is only part of the cost: payment processing, fulfillment, domains, marketing, hardware, and optional Square products can add to it. See Square’s current plan comparison for plan features and rates.

#1 Best Overall
Square Terminal - Credit Card Machine to Accept All Payments | Mobile POS
  • With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.
  • Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
  • Process chip cards in just two seconds.
  • Get your money as soon as the next business day.
  • Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.
Plan Monthly software fee Online card processing Best fit
Square Free $0 per location 3.3% + $0.30 Testing, small catalogs, and modest online volume
Square Plus $49 per location 2.9% + $0.30 Businesses that need paid-plan features or have enough online sales for the lower rate to matter
Square Premium $149 per location 2.9% + $0.30 Businesses that use the broader Square software bundle, support, or other Premium benefits

Square lists a 30-day free trial for Plus and Premium. Plus and Premium are priced per active location, not once per business. A four-location operation would pay $196 per month for Plus or $596 for Premium before processing and other costs. Square Free allows multiple locations without an additional location subscription fee.

Other processing rates to know

Payment type Free Plus Premium
In person 2.6% + $0.15 2.5% + $0.15 2.4% + $0.15
Online or invoice card payment 3.3% + $0.30 2.9% + $0.30 2.9% + $0.30
Online API payment 2.9% + $0.30 2.9% + $0.30 2.9% + $0.30

Other listed charges include 1% for ACH payments through an invoice, with a $1 minimum and a $10 cap on Plus and Premium; 3.5% + $0.15 for manually entered or card-on-file payments; and 6% + $0.30 for Afterpay. Cards issued outside the U.S. incur an additional 1.5% international transaction fee. Square says processing is deducted from the total transaction amount, including tax and tip. Fees may differ by account, location, or legacy plan, so check Square Dashboard → Settings → Account & Settings → Pricing & subscriptions for the rates that apply to your locations. Square’s fee guide explains these charges.

When does Plus break even on online processing?

Plus costs $49 more per month than Free and reduces the standard online rate by 0.4 percentage points. At about $12,250 in monthly online card volume, that rate difference equals $49: $12,250 × 0.004 = $49. This is a rough comparison, not a universal recommendation. It excludes refunds, taxes, international cards, Afterpay, other Square sales, and the value of Plus features; it also assumes the same $0.30 fixed fee per transaction. Below that volume, Plus could still be worthwhile for its tools. Above it, verify the exact rate and fees on your account before deciding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Premium has the same standard online card rate as Plus, so more online sales alone do not make it the cheaper choice. Its case depends on other features, lower in-person rates, support, operational capabilities, or its gift-card terms.

Rank #2
Square Register (2nd Generation) - Powered by POS
  • A complete countertop point of sale — Combine dual responsive touchscreens, built-in POS software, and durable hardware for a fast, reliable checkout experience.
  • Serve customers faster — Run smoothly through busy shifts, complex menus, and big orders with high-speed processing, memory, and responsive touchscreen displays.
  • Accept every way they pay — Take all major cards at one simple rate, with no hidden fees or long-term contracts. Receive funds as soon as the next business day.
  • Handle real-world demands — Resist everyday spills, dust, and wear with a durable, IP54-rated design.
  • Stay reliable through every rush — Maintain strong connectivity and consistent performance through your busiest hours.

Costs that can sit outside the plan fee

  • Per-location billing: Plus and Premium multiply with each active location.
  • Marketing texts: Plus includes 500 per month per account, then lists 3 cents per text. Premium includes 2,500, then lists 1.5 cents per text. Free does not include text-message marketing under the plan comparison.
  • Gift cards: The plan comparison lists a 2.5% gift-card load fee on Free and Plus, and 0% on Premium.
  • Payment method surcharges: International cards and Afterpay cost more than standard online card processing.
  • Domain and fulfillment: A Square subdomain is available, but a custom domain may cost extra. Postage, packaging, delivery, and returns are separate business costs.
  • Optional products and equipment: Online-only sellers do not need Square hardware. Payroll, KDS, Kiosk, and other products may have separate pricing or plan conditions. Square’s plan page lists hardware options starting at $59, but that is not an ecommerce requirement.

What Square Online includes

Website builder and design

Square provides a section-based editor, templates, product pages tied to the Square catalog, and controls for a straightforward store or ordering site. Its documented web tools include SEO fields, blogging, a custom-domain connection, a Square subdomain option, cookie banners, tracking codes, customer reviews, abandoned-cart emails, pop-ups, password-protected pages, URL redirects, and social links or integrations. See Square’s setup and feature documentation.

This is a practical toolkit for a menu, local business site, or conventional small store—not a promise of extensive creative control. Businesses that need unusual page structures, highly customized product logic, or sophisticated merchandising should test the editor against real requirements before moving an established store. SEO controls can help you provide search engines with useful information; they do not guarantee rankings. Product copy, photography, navigation, site performance, and the quality of the offer still matter.

Catalog and inventory

The key advantage for Square merchants is a shared item catalog: products and inventory can connect with Square POS, reducing the need to maintain separate online and in-store lists. Square also lists SKU and item management, stock tracking, low-stock alerts, inventory history, bundles, unit-cost tracking, purchase orders, vendor management, and barcode-related workflows. Optional Shopify synchronization is available through Square’s Thrive Inventory capability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That does not make Square a full warehouse-management system. A modest retailer may be well served, but businesses with multiple warehouses, complex purchasing, advanced replenishment, or configurable products should verify the workflows in a trial or demo before migrating.

Checkout and payment options

For U.S. sellers, Square lists major credit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Square Pay, Cash App Pay, and Afterpay among its payment options. The wider Square system also supports workflows involving cash, checks, Square Gift Cards, payment links, invoices, and Virtual Terminal. Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android can support in-person payments without a separate reader in applicable workflows.

Rank #3
Square Handheld - Portable POS - Credit Card Machine to Accept Payments for Restaurants, Retail, Beauty, and Professional Services
  • With Square Handheld, you can accept payments, take tableside orders, or scan barcodes anywhere. With a slim design and comfortable grip, the POS is easy to carry in your palm or pocket. Square Handheld is designed to withstand water splashes and dust. Add an optional protective case for accidental drops. A long-lasting battery and offline payments let you keep selling.
  • Slim, pocketable, and lightweight so you can accept payments wherever your customers are.
  • Take tableside orders, bust lines, or use the built-in barcode scanner, all with one sleek device.
  • A battery that can power through your shift and offline payments let you keep selling, even if your internet is down.
  • Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one simple rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts required.

Availability depends on country, account, checkout configuration, plan, and product category. A payment method listed in Square’s ecosystem is not necessarily available for every store or transaction type.

Shipping, pickup, delivery, and QR ordering

Square supports shipping, in-store pickup, curbside pickup, local delivery, staff delivery or third-party courier workflows, and QR-code ordering. Sellers can configure shipping-rate profiles and print shipping labels in bulk; Square also lists U.S. shipping discounts through the Dashboard. Restaurants and neighborhood businesses may get more value from pickup, QR ordering, and delivery than from conventional parcel shipping.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan fulfillment details carefully. Products with very different sizes, weights, or handling requirements can make shipping rules harder to manage. Local delivery needs clear zones, fees, order minimums, and time windows. Digital and other nonphysical products also need a separate check of how delivery instructions, customer support, and post-purchase access will work.

Sales, customer, and marketing tools

Depending on the plan and setup, Square’s tools include coupons and discounts, scheduled sales and price changes, gift cards, customer accounts and a customer directory, loyalty, email and text marketing, abandoned-cart messages, social selling, customer reviews, reporting, and integrations with platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Google Business, and Google Ads. Square AI appears as a beta feature on the current plan page; treat a beta capability as subject to change, not a core reason to buy.

Square Reader for contactless and chip (2nd Generation)
  • Use the, easy-to-use, and customizable POS to get started.
  • Accept contactless payments, chip cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay from anywhere, with improved connectivity, extended battery life, and enhanced security. Pay one low rate for every tap or dip.
  • No long-term commitments or contracts, no monthly fees- and with offline payments, keep taking payments for up to 24 hours.
  • Safely and securely accepts payments anywhere. Plus, get data security, 24/7 fraud prevention, and payment-dispute management at no extra cost.
  • Use the, easy-to-use, and customizable POS to get started.

Not every tool is included in Free, and an ecosystem feature is not automatically included in an online-store subscription. Check the plan comparison for the feature and allowance you actually intend to use. Email and text campaigns can create their own costs, particularly when text allowances are exceeded.

Subscriptions: useful, but not a full specialist system

Square Subscriptions can make catalog items recurring, with online subscription orders, subscription tracking, Order Manager fulfillment, sales reporting, item-level tax settings, subscribe-and-save discounts, and sales through QR codes or social media. For a simple recurring product, that may be enough.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Square documents important restrictions: pickup is not available for subscription plans; custom billing dates are unavailable; prices on an existing subscription plan cannot be changed after creation; active subscription items cannot be swapped; and minimum commitment periods cannot be required. Subscription management is available in the Dashboard and iOS Point of Sale app, but not Android devices. These constraints matter for meal plans, farm boxes, recurring local pickup, and clubs that need flexible swaps or billing. Review the Square Subscriptions documentation before building a business model around it.

How setup works

Square’s documented sequence is straightforward. Have product details, prices, tax rules, and fulfillment choices ready before you start:

  • Works in conjunction with most downloadable Square point-of-sale apps on your device. Customers can pay, tip and sign directly on your device. Track payments in cash, gift cards and more. • App sends deposits to your bank account within 1 to 2 business days, or enjoy instant deposits (fees apply).
  1. Create and configure items in the Square catalog.
  2. Assign fulfillment methods: shipping, pickup, delivery, QR ordering, or nonphysical delivery.
  3. Configure taxes for the relevant sales.
  4. Design the site and organize its pages and products.
  5. Add optional features such as a blog, reviews, tracking, social connections, and abandoned-cart emails.
  6. Configure checkout and the payment methods available to your account.
  7. Connect or purchase a domain, or use a Square subdomain.
  8. Review the site and checkout, then publish.

Check mobile layouts, shipping charges, tax behavior, inventory deductions, pickup instructions, and confirmation messages before accepting real orders. Publishing the site is only one part of making the buying and fulfillment process work.

Is Square Online right for your business?

  • Retail: A good candidate if you sell a manageable catalog in person and online and want inventory connected to Square POS. Test advanced purchasing, warehouse, and product-configuration needs.
  • Restaurants and cafés: A natural fit for menus, pickup, local delivery, QR ordering, and Square’s in-person ecosystem. Verify the exact ordering, delivery, and location fees for your operation.
  • Makers and artists: A useful starting point for a small physical-goods catalog and straightforward shipping. Sellers with complex personalization or broad international fulfillment may need a more specialized platform.
  • Service businesses: Square’s wider ecosystem can connect selling with customer records and other Square tools, but bookings or staff capabilities may be separate or plan-dependent. Do not assume they are all included in the website price.
  • Digital products: The store can be considered for nonphysical items, but confirm the delivery and customer-support workflow for the product you sell.
  • Subscription businesses: Suitable only if Square’s subscription restrictions fit your offer. Local pickup, item swaps, custom billing dates, and minimum commitments are notable gaps.
  • Multi-location businesses: Shared Square operations may help, but calculate Plus or Premium fees at every active location. Location-based costs can change the economics quickly.
  • Existing Square POS users: Usually the clearest fit because the catalog, inventory, orders, payments, and customer tools can live in the same ecosystem. Still compare your current rates and plan before changing a legacy subscription.

Where Square Online falls short

  • Free’s transaction rate can become expensive: A $0 monthly fee is attractive at low volume, but payment fees are not zero.
  • Paid subscriptions scale by location: Multi-location sellers should calculate the full monthly software cost, not treat $49 or $149 as a business-wide price.
  • Design and commerce depth have limits: Square works best for conventional small-store and local-ordering needs, not every complex catalog or heavily customized brand experience.
  • Some tools are tiered or separate: The broader Square ecosystem is not one all-inclusive website plan; verify feature access, allowances, and add-on pricing.
  • Subscriptions have operational gaps: The pickup and modification limits can conflict with common recurring local-food and membership models.
  • International operations need separate checking: This review covers U.S. pricing. Rates, payment methods, tax tools, currencies, and product availability depend on the account’s country.
  • Offline payments carry risk: Square says offline payments process after the device reconnects and may be declined if reconnection does not happen within 24 hours of the first offline payment. The seller remains responsible for expired, declined, or disputed offline transactions.

Current plans versus older Square Online subscriptions

Some existing sellers may still see legacy Square Online subscriptions, while new customers see consolidated Free, Plus, and Premium plans. Older online articles may quote prices or features that no longer match the current U.S. offering. Before switching, inspect Pricing & subscriptions in the Dashboard and compare your actual features and rates.

Square says moving from an older paid plan can cancel the old hosting subscription and issue a prorated refund. That does not mean migration is automatically beneficial or reversible. Check what changes for your site and other Square products before confirming. See Square’s plan migration guidance.

Square Online compared with alternatives

Platform Consider it if… Trade-off compared with Square
Shopify Your business is ecommerce-first and you expect to rely on a broader store ecosystem, apps, and merchandising options. It may be more extensible, but a Square POS user should plan how online and in-person systems will connect. Check current pricing directly.
WooCommerce You use WordPress and want more ownership and customization over the store. The core platform is free, but hosting, extensions, maintenance, security, updates, and payment processing remain operating costs. WooCommerce lists typical hosting of $25–$350 per month and extensions commonly at $29–$299 per year; actual costs vary.
Wix Ecommerce Visual website flexibility is more important than tightly integrated Square operations. It offers a general-purpose website-building approach, but Square’s POS, catalog, and local ordering are not its natural center.
BigCommerce You have a growing or complex catalog and want a hosted platform oriented around ecommerce operations. It may offer more depth, but can be more platform than a small local seller needs. Check current pricing directly.
Ecwid You want to add commerce to an existing website rather than rebuild around a store platform. It may be less compelling if a unified POS, inventory, and payment ecosystem is the priority.

There is no universal winner: Square’s advantage is operational simplicity for Square-centered sellers, while alternatives may suit businesses prioritizing ecommerce depth, design flexibility, or WordPress control.

Which Square plan should you choose?

  • Choose Free to test demand, run a modest catalog, or add online ordering to an existing Square operation when a subdomain and 3.3% + $0.30 online processing are acceptable.
  • Choose Plus when you need its paid features or when the 0.4-point reduction in standard online processing can justify $49 per location. Use the break-even calculation as a starting point, not the only criterion.
  • Choose Premium when the wider Square bundle, support, in-person rate, or other Premium benefits justify $149 per location. Do not buy it just to reduce standard online fees; its listed online rate matches Plus.
  • Choose another platform if your business depends on complex product configuration, advanced B2B workflows, sophisticated subscriptions, extensive customization, or international ecommerce as a central requirement.

Square can be an easy, low-risk way to bring a small business online, particularly when it already runs on Square. The right plan depends on actual location count, payment mix, sales volume, and the features you will use—not the word “free” or the assumption that the highest tier is best.
