Verdict: The Sony WH-1000XM5 remains a strong buy at the latest observed Sony-direct price of $248, down from its $399.99 list price. But the headline $150-off Prime Day deal is date-sensitive: Amazon’s October 2025 promotion reached about $249.99, while June 2026 Prime Day coverage reported an even lower $198 price. Check the live price, seller, condition, warranty, and return terms before buying.
At roughly $198 to $250, the XM5 offers premium noise cancellation, multipoint Bluetooth, LDAC support, and up to 30 hours of battery life for considerably less than Sony’s newer WH-1000XM6.
Is the Sony WH-1000XM5 really $150 off?
The “$150 off” figure is legitimate when calculated against Sony’s $399.99 list price. Sony’s product listing was most recently observed at $248, a displayed saving of $151.99. That is a current Sony-direct price signal, not proof that an Amazon Prime Day promotion is still running.
The timing matters:
- October 2025 Prime Day: Engadget reported a price of about $249.99, or $150 off the $399.99 launch price. Engadget’s report described it as close to the model’s historical low.
- June 2026 Prime Day: Digital Trends and Tom’s Hardware reported a price of $198. Those outlets described it as an all-time or record low, though their deal-history methodology is not independently established here. See Digital Trends and Tom’s Hardware.
- Latest Sony-direct signal: The black WH-1000XM5 was observed at $248, marked down from $399.99. Prices and inventory can change quickly.
So the honest comparison is not simply “$150 off.” The XM5 has been available for less, and a discount from MSRP is not necessarily the same as saving $150 compared with its recent everyday street price.

Should you buy the XM5 at $198 to $250?
Yes, if you want premium over-ear noise cancellation and the unit is new, genuine, and covered by an acceptable return policy and warranty. At $198, it is an exceptional value based on the reported Prime Day price. At approximately $248 to $250, it is still a strong purchase for travelers, commuters, and remote workers.
The recommendation becomes less clear near $300 or higher. Sony’s newer WH-1000XM6 is listed in Sony’s headphone catalog at $459.99, with a recently observed Sony-direct price of $398. If the price gap between the two models narrows substantially, paying more for the current generation may make more sense.

Leading reviews generally praise the XM5 for reducing low-frequency noise such as airplane and train rumble, bus noise, HVAC systems, and office background sound. Those benefits are not identical for every listener. Noise-canceling performance depends on the ear-cup seal, glasses, hair, head shape, wind, and the type of sound around you. ANC is usually more effective against steady low-frequency noise than sudden or irregular high-frequency sounds.

The XM5 is not obsolete simply because Sony released the XM6. The practical question is whether the newer model’s improvements justify the extra cost. Buy the XM5 when the discount is substantial and your priorities are strong ANC, comfort, multipoint, and value. Choose the XM6 when you want Sony’s newest flagship or the price difference is small enough that future-proofing matters more than saving money.
Important compromises before you buy
- Less compact travel design: The XM5’s redesign does not fold as compactly as some older Sony models, which matters if luggage space is limited.
- “Up to” battery life: The 30-hour claim is a maximum under specified conditions, not a guaranteed result for every configuration.
- Wireless and wired trade-offs: USB-C is used for charging. Verify your intended wired-audio setup rather than assuming the charging port works exactly like a conventional analog headphone input.
- Automatic features: Speak-to-Chat, wearing detection, and touch controls are convenient for some people and annoying for others. Sony’s app lets you adjust or disable several behaviors.
- Durability uncertainty: Sony’s support materials include headband repair information for the WH-1000XM4 and WH-1000XM5. Online reports also contain anecdotal complaints about hinges and headbands, but those reports do not establish a failure rate or prove a systemic defect. Check warranty and return coverage carefully.
- Previous-generation support: Confirm firmware and software support after purchase. Sony’s support page lists firmware version 2.5.1 dated December 18, 2025, and its downloads page identifies Sony | Sound Connect among the current software resources.

- Buyers who want flagship-level ANC without paying current-generation pricing.
- Anyone who finds the XM6 too expensive at its current price.
Consider another option if you need the smallest possible case, a more rugged or replaceable-battery design, a neutral wired-first listening experience, very low-latency gaming audio, or stronger Apple ecosystem integration. Bose’s QuietComfort Ultra, Sennheiser’s Momentum 4, and Apple’s AirPods Max each target different priorities, but their current prices and trade-offs should be checked separately before purchase.
