Yes—Sonos and IKEA have mutually ended their eight-year SYMFONISK collaboration. They will not develop new SYMFONISK products together, and IKEA’s regional notices say the existing range would stop being sold in January 2026 or sooner if stock ran out. However, existing SYMFONISK speakers do not immediately stop working: IKEA and Sonos say software updates, customer service, and support will continue, although neither company has published a permanent end-of-support date.
What exactly ended?
There are three separate developments, and confusing them can lead to a bad buying decision:
- New product development ended. Sonos and IKEA will not create additional SYMFONISK products together.
- Retail sales are being phased out. IKEA’s regional customer-service notices specify January 2026, or earlier where inventory runs out. That timetable is not necessarily identical in every country.
- Support continues. IKEA says existing products will continue receiving software updates and customer service. Sonos continues to provide SYMFONISK setup, pairing, and troubleshooting support.
In other words, the partnership is over, but “SYMFONISK speakers are dead” is inaccurate. The products are better understood as a discontinued but currently supported part of the Sonos ecosystem.

IKEA says the companies achieved the collaboration’s goals and are now pursuing their own future directions. The customer-facing explanation does not identify a specific dispute, sales problem, app issue, or other failure, so those should not be treated as confirmed reasons.

What was the SYMFONISK partnership?
Launched in 2018, SYMFONISK combined Sonos networked-speaker technology with IKEA furniture and interior-design products. The range included:
- Bookshelf speakers
- Table-lamp speakers
- Picture-frame speakers
- Floor-lamp speakers
The products were designed to integrate with Sonos systems rather than operate as a separate IKEA-only audio platform. Sonos describes SYMFONISK as Wi-Fi speakers that work within the Sonos ecosystem. The original IKEA launch release and Sonos product overview explain the collaboration and product concept.
Will existing SYMFONISK speakers keep working?
Yes, according to the companies’ current support commitments. Existing speakers remain usable through the Sonos system and are primarily controlled through the Sonos app for iOS or Android. Sonos still publishes instructions for setup, stereo pairing, system troubleshooting, and related features on its SYMFONISK support page.

IKEA and Sonos have not promised lifetime support or provided a precise final date for software updates. Continued support is therefore reassuring, but it is not a guarantee that every product will receive updates indefinitely.

App and compatibility considerations
- Use the Sonos app for core speaker setup and playback. The IKEA Home smart app does not replace the Sonos app for those functions.
- Two compatible SYMFONISK speakers can be configured as a stereo pair.
- Some models can be used as home-theater surrounds with compatible Sonos products, but surround configurations have stricter requirements than ordinary room grouping.
- Some SYMFONISK speakers are not compatible with the older Sonos S1 Controller app. Check the exact model before buying or combining one with older Sonos equipment.
- Trueplay availability depends on the Sonos app, device, and configuration; it should not be assumed to work identically in every setup.
Problems such as the app failing to find a speaker, a speaker disappearing from the system, audio dropouts, or unexpectedly quiet surround audio are ordinary troubleshooting categories listed by Sonos. They are not evidence that the partnership ending caused the problem.
Can you still buy a SYMFONISK speaker?
Possibly, depending on your country, store, and remaining inventory. IKEA’s regional notices describe a sell-through period rather than a universal, simultaneous global cutoff. In the United States, check IKEA’s speaker category, local store inventory, warranty terms, and whether an item is new, clearance, open-box, as-is, or refurbished. IKEA’s 2025 U.S. buying guide documents the range but does not guarantee current stock.
When buying remaining stock makes financial sense
A discontinued speaker is not automatically a poor purchase. It may be sensible when the price compensates for the lack of a future product roadmap and the buyer wants the IKEA design.
Buying may make sense if:
- The price is substantially below comparable current Sonos hardware.
- You specifically want a lamp, picture frame, bookshelf, or floor-lamp format.
- You already own Sonos products and have confirmed model and app compatibility.
- The retailer offers a clear return policy and valid warranty coverage.
- The product includes all required parts.
Be more cautious if:
- The price is close to a current Sonos speaker.
- You want the newest hardware, connectivity, or a long-term product roadmap.
- The unit is used or open-box with uncertain warranty coverage.
- Brackets, artwork fronts, lamp components, power cables, or mounting hardware are missing.
- The seller cannot verify that the speaker can be returned if setup fails.
Do not judge a “deal” by comparing clearance stock with its original MSRP. Compare the actual current price with available alternatives and assign a value to the design, accessories, warranty, and return rights you are receiving.

Current alternatives
Sonos Era 100
The Sonos Era 100 is the closest current Sonos ecosystem alternative for the conventional bookshelf-speaker use case. It offers Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Apple AirPlay 2, Trueplay, line-in support through an adapter, and compatibility with current Sonos features and configurations.
It is not an identical replacement: it is a conventional speaker, not an IKEA lamp, picture frame, or furniture-integrated product. Sonos’ U.S. page has shown a $219 list price and temporary prices around $179–$189 in different page renderings. Prices and availability change, so verify the live price before buying.
Sonos Era 100 SL
The Era 100 SL is positioned as a lower-priced, microphone-free version. It may suit buyers who do not want voice-control microphones, but it gives up the distinctive SYMFONISK furniture designs. Sonos’ page has shown approximately $189 regular pricing alongside temporary promotions; treat those figures as time-sensitive rather than guaranteed.
Used SYMFONISK
A used unit can be attractive if you need a matching speaker for an existing stereo pair or specifically want the lamp or picture-frame format. The trade-offs are uncertain warranty coverage, cosmetic wear, older hardware revisions, missing proprietary parts, and limited ability to return a defective unit.
A pre-purchase compatibility checklist
- Identify the exact SYMFONISK model and hardware generation.
- Confirm whether it works with the Sonos app version and any existing S1 or current-system equipment in your home.
- Check whether the intended use is ordinary room playback, stereo pairing, or home-theater surrounds.
- Confirm that the seller includes power cables, brackets, artwork fronts, lamp components, and other model-specific parts.
- Check the retailer’s warranty, return window, and clearance or as-is restrictions.
- Compare the final price with the live price of an Era 100 or Era 100 SL, not merely with the original SYMFONISK price.
What the ending means for different buyers

Sonos and IKEA have ended the SYMFONISK collaboration and will not develop new products together. Retail availability is ending or has ended by market, but existing speakers continue to work and remain supported for now. Buy remaining stock only when the live price, warranty, compatibility, and IKEA-specific design justify choosing a discontinued line over current Sonos hardware.
