Smiths Group’s “scrambling to restore systems” story belongs to January 2025—not an ongoing outage in 2026. The UK industrial technology company disclosed unauthorized access to its systems on January 28, 2025. It isolated affected systems, activated business-continuity plans and brought in cybersecurity specialists. Smiths later said its critical systems had been fully recovered, although the incident caused longer-lasting commercial disruption at its John Crane business and led to £4 million in FY2025 remediation costs.
Smiths did not publicly confirm ransomware, identify an attacker or establish that customer, employee or other data had been stolen.
What Smiths Group confirmed
Smiths Group said on January 28, 2025, that it was managing a cybersecurity incident involving unauthorized access to company systems. Its immediate response included isolating affected systems, activating business-continuity plans and engaging external cybersecurity experts to investigate and support recovery. The company also said it was taking steps to meet relevant regulatory requirements.

The initial announcement did not disclose when the intrusion began, which applications or infrastructure were accessed, the attack vector or the identity of the responsible threat actor. Smiths also did not say that files had been encrypted or that a ransom had been demanded. Smiths’ incident announcement described the event as a cyber security incident and unauthorized access—not specifically as ransomware or a confirmed data breach.

What was known—and what was not
| Publicly supported | Not publicly confirmed |
|---|---|
| Unauthorized access to company systems | Ransomware or a ransom demand |
| Affected systems were isolated | The attacker or threat group |
| Business-continuity plans were activated | The initial attack method |
| Cybersecurity specialists were engaged | Data exfiltration or data theft |
| Impact was later described as involving internal enterprise systems | Compromise of Smiths products or customer-site equipment |
That distinction matters. Unauthorized access means an intruder reached systems without permission; it does not by itself prove that information was copied, that malware encrypted files or that operational technology was compromised. Contemporary reporting likewise found no public ransomware claim at the time. SecurityWeek’s January 2025 report noted that important technical details remained undisclosed.
Which Smiths businesses were affected?
Smiths Group is a UK-based industrial technology company with businesses including John Crane, Flex-Tek, Smiths Detection and, during the relevant reporting period, Smiths Interconnect. The company’s later disclosures indicated that the incident affected internal enterprise systems. They did not establish that Smiths Detection screening equipment, products deployed at customer sites or manufacturing-control systems had been compromised.
The clearest commercial consequences appeared at John Crane. The business supplies engineered products and services, including sealing and rotating-equipment solutions, to industrial customers. Smiths said the incident affected John Crane revenue and orders in January 2025, with effects continuing into the third quarter of its financial year. Recovery took longer there because of the number of systems involved.

- HARDWARE PLUS SECURITY SERVICES: FortiGate-60F Firewall Appliance bundled with 1 year of FortiCare Premium and FortiGuard Unified Threat Protection.
- UNIFIED THREAT PROTECTION (UTP): Secures against advanced online threats with comprehensive web filtering and anti-botnet technologies.
- OPTIMIZED FOR MEDIUM-SIZED BUSINESSES: Tailored for businesses needing robust security without the infrastructure of larger enterprises.
- RELIABLE CUSTOMER SUPPORT: FortiCare Premium ensures high-quality support and service continuity.
- EFFECTIVE PROTECTION: Employs advanced filtering technologies to safeguard against sophisticated threats.
This is an important difference from describing the event as a Group-wide production shutdown. The public record supports disruption to internal systems and business processes, with the most visible commercial effect concentrated in John Crane. It does not show that every Smiths operation stopped or that customer products were disabled.
Recovery timeline
- January 28, 2025: Smiths disclosed unauthorized access, isolated affected systems, activated continuity procedures and began an investigation with outside experts.
- January 31, 2025: Smiths said the impact was limited to internal enterprise systems and that most critical systems were back online. It maintained its full-year financial guidance, while warning that some late-January revenue could move into the second half of the financial year. The company’s recovery update provides that position.
- FY2025: Smiths said the recovery took longer than expected in John Crane, affecting revenue and orders into the third quarter. Its financial reporting recorded £4 million in cyber-incident remediation costs.
- Later FY2025 reporting: Smiths said all critical Group systems had been fully recovered and were operating as usual. John Crane’s aftermarket activity recovered in the fourth quarter, although the incident contributed to weaker growth earlier in the year.
Containment and recovery are different stages. In a typical enterprise incident, systems may be isolated quickly but reconnected only after credentials, access controls, backups, dependencies and business data have been checked. Orders or service work handled manually during an outage may also need to be reconciled. Those are general incident-response considerations; Smiths has not publicly described its detailed technical recovery process.
How much did the cyberattack cost?
Smiths initially estimated the incident would cost approximately £4 million to £5 million. It ultimately reported £4 million in FY2025 remediation costs, classified as a significant non-headline item because the expense was considered substantial, non-recurring and outside ordinary trading activity. Smiths’ FY2025 results provide the final reported figure.

That £4 million should not be treated as the attack’s complete economic cost. It is the disclosed remediation expense, not necessarily the value of delayed sales, internal staff time, customer concessions, insurance effects, longer-term security investment, legal exposure or lost opportunities. Smiths separately reported that John Crane revenue and orders were affected, so the accounting cost and commercial impact should be considered separately.

Smiths maintained its full-year guidance shortly after the incident and later reported strong FY2025 results. That suggests the event was serious but not publicly presented as an existential threat to the Group.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why an internal-systems incident can affect industrial revenue
An industrial company can experience meaningful commercial disruption even when its products and customer-site equipment are not compromised. Internal enterprise systems commonly support functions such as order intake, quotations, invoicing, inventory, customer service, scheduling and aftermarket work. Losing access to those processes can delay transactions and service activity without causing a physical safety event or a shutdown of every factory.

For risk managers, the Smiths case illustrates why cyber resilience is broader than endpoint detection. Useful safeguards include tested restoration procedures, protected and regularly tested backups, privileged-access controls, network segmentation, supplier-dependency mapping and rehearsed manual-workaround procedures. Security products may support those goals, but no tool alone guarantees prevention or recovery.
Current status
Based on Smiths’ later FY2025 reporting, its critical systems were restored and operating normally. John Crane’s commercial recovery continued through the financial year, with aftermarket performance recovering in the fourth quarter. Smiths also said it had identified lessons from the incident and planned further business-continuity enhancements in FY2026. The FY2025 annual report discusses those follow-up plans.
No public source identified in the supplied reporting confirmed a ransomware operation, a ransom payment, a named threat actor or data theft. The unresolved questions are therefore technical: how the attacker gained access, what systems were reached, whether information was removed and how long unauthorized access lasted. Smiths’ public disclosures establish the operational response and subsequent recovery, but not those details.
