Yes, the global smartphone market has shifted toward more expensive devices—but “approaching $300” describes the market several years ago, not today. Counterpoint reported a global smartphone average selling price (ASP) of $322 for 2021 and forecast about $370 for 2025. Recent 2026 outlooks from IDC put the forecast higher still, but its published figures differ substantially. These are industry averages, not the price every shopper pays.
What a global smartphone ASP actually measures
ASP means average selling price. In market reports, it generally represents the value of smartphones sold or shipped divided by the relevant unit count. It is a blended industry measure: high-priced models are averaged with lower-cost phones sold in markets with very different incomes and retail conditions.
It is not automatically the retail average at a store checkout. Wholesale ASP, retail ASP, advertised launch price and a buyer’s effective price after discounts, trade-ins, taxes or financing are different measures. A global wholesale figure is useful for understanding the industry; it cannot tell a U.S. shopper what a phone should cost locally.
The precise result also depends on scope and method: annual or quarterly period, shipments or sell-through, smartphones alone or a wider device category, and currency treatment. Compare figures only when those definitions are clear.

The original “approaching $300” framing appeared in April 2022 and referred to the 2021 market. That historical article is not a current benchmark. IDC’s 2026 outlook also forecasts shipments falling 13.9% to 1.09 billion; that is a forecast, not a finalized shipment result. IDC’s outlook illustrates why higher average value and fewer units can occur together.
Why the average can rise even when many phone prices do not
Premiumization changes the mix
If buyers purchase a greater share of premium devices, the blended average rises even if prices within each tier stay flat. For illustration only: 70 phones at $200 and 30 at $800 yield a $380 average. If the mix changes to 60 at $200 and 40 at $800, the average is $440. No individual price increased.
Counterpoint identified premiumization as a central driver of the increase. Coverage of its research put phones priced at $600 or more at a record 29% of global sales in the first half of 2026. That remains a minority share, and the figure is attributed to Counterpoint rather than an independently verified count. Coverage of the Counterpoint finding.

Brand and regional mix matter
A few high-ASP vendors can pull a global average upward without representing the price of most individual phones. Counterpoint reported 2021 brand ASPs of $825 for Apple, $263 for Samsung, and about $259 each for OPPO and vivo, compared with $322 for the global market that year. Those are brand-level market averages, not prices for particular models. Counterpoint’s 2021 figures.
Sales shares also differ by geography. A global blend combines markets with different incomes, taxes, subsidies and retail channels. It cannot describe a typical buyer in any one country without regional data.
5G drove an earlier part of the change
The transition from 4G to 5G raised blended prices when 5G phones generally occupied higher price tiers. Counterpoint cited the growing 5G share as part of the 2021 increase; IDC-related reporting also forecast a substantial ASP gap between 5G and 4G devices in 2021. Components and AI features add cost pressure, but not one-for-one
Memory, processors, displays, camera systems and modem technology affect manufacturers’ costs. IDC’s 2026 outlook links market pressure to structurally higher costs and says vendors are responding with price increases and greater focus on higher tiers. Higher component costs do not translate mechanically into the same increase in retail prices: manufacturers can absorb costs, change specifications or adjust margins.

Foldables and longer ownership cycles affect value differently
Foldables and ultra-premium models can contribute substantial value while accounting for a small share of units. IDC described foldables as a category where vendors could defend premium pricing while also growing units. A high-priced niche can influence revenue and ASP without becoming the typical phone.

Keeping a phone for longer may make a higher upfront spend worthwhile if the device remains useful, but it can also delay purchases and reduce unit volumes. The available market figures do not establish a precise global replacement cycle, so they cannot show how much this behavior contributes to the ASP trend.
Why shipments can fall while ASP rises
ASP reflects the average value per phone, not the number of phones sold. If fewer people buy devices but a larger share of those purchases are expensive models, shipments can decline while the average rises. Revenue may therefore prove more resilient than unit volume, while the market becomes more dependent on buyers able to afford premium devices. IDC’s 2026 forecast pairs a sharp shipment decline with higher costs and vendor focus on higher tiers; it is an outlook, not a guarantee.

Where consumers may feel the pressure
Entry-level phones
Budget models have little room to absorb cost increases. Pressure can mean fewer low-cost choices, slower adoption of new components, older chipsets or less memory and storage at a given price. IDC’s 2026 outlook describes particular strain at lower tiers. Refurbished devices may become more important for buyers who need a capable phone below the price of a new premium model.

Midrange phones
The $300–$500 bracket is a contested comparison point: a new midrange handset may compete with a discounted previous-generation flagship or a refurbished premium device. Compare the features that affect years of use—support period, battery, camera, storage and repair options—rather than assuming the newer model offers better value.
Premium and ultra-premium phones
Premium vendors often have more pricing power and more ways to frame the purchase through trade-ins or financing. Those offers change upfront cost, not necessarily total cost. Foldables are a visible example of premium pricing, but their high prices should not be mistaken for the price of the overall market.
What the trend means when you are buying a phone
A rising global wholesale ASP does not establish that every consumer is worse off or that every phone’s sticker price rose. Some buyers get more capable devices; others face fewer affordable choices or pay more because costs have risen. List prices, effective prices and the value received are distinct.

- Compare total cost, not just monthly payments. Add installment payments and required plan costs, then check whether trade-in credits arrive over time and what happens if you leave early.
- Check whether the upgrade will last. Look at the software and security update commitment, battery life, repairability, parts availability and whether the storage configuration will suit you for several years.
- Compare a new midrange phone with last year’s flagship. A discounted older premium model may offer a better camera or display, but verify remaining support, battery condition and compatibility with your carrier’s bands and eSIM.
- Consider refurbished or repair before replacing. Check warranty, battery-health terms, unlocked status and update support. A battery replacement can be cheaper than replacing a working phone.
- Evaluate trade-ins against an unlocked price. Promotional values may depend on a qualifying plan, device condition and a multi-month credit schedule; compare the offer’s full-term value with the cost of buying outright.
These checks matter more to a household budget than the global ASP: the relevant number is what you pay over the period you intend to keep the device, including plan obligations and any repair or replacement costs.
