IDC reported that worldwide smartphone shipments rose 6.5% year over year to 285.4 million units in Q2 2024. It was the market’s fourth consecutive quarter of shipment growth and a meaningful turn after a prolonged downturn—but not proof of a broad smartphone boom. Demand remained weak in some markets, and other research firms measured a stronger rebound using their own estimates.
What the 6.5% figure actually measures
The 6.5% refers to preliminary worldwide smartphone shipments in Q2 2024 compared with Q2 2023, according to IDC’s July 2024 report. IDC counted 285.4 million units. Its tracker covers shipments of new branded smartphones, excluding refurbished devices, and preliminary figures can be revised.
Shipments are devices counted as moving through the market, not a direct count of phones consumers bought at retail. They are not revenue, profit, active users, replacement intent, or shipments of every type of mobile phone. Shipments can rise because retailers and distributors replenish stock as well as because shoppers buy more phones. The figure is therefore evidence of recovery in the supply chain’s unit volume—not a standalone measure of consumer demand or vendor financial health.

IDC was not the only tracker to find growth, but its estimate was notably more restrained:

These are separate providers’ estimates, not three readings of an identical public dataset. Trackers may differ in shipment or sell-in definitions, channel-inventory treatment, company and subsidiary classifications, regional coverage, cutoffs, estimation procedures, and later revisions. The available figures do not establish which single methodological choice explains the gap. It would be misleading to average them or label one provider wrong. The robust shared conclusion is that all three saw a year-over-year recovery; the measured size of that rebound varied materially. See the original releases from Counterpoint and Canalys.
Why shipments recovered
Several forces helped lift volume, but the evidence points to normalization rather than a sudden structural surge in smartphone ownership.

- Delayed upgrades began returning. After consumers postponed purchases during the 2022–2023 downturn, some came back to replace aging devices. That release of deferred demand helped the year-over-year comparison, which was measured against a weak period.
- Emerging markets provided important momentum. Counterpoint’s 2024 outlook highlighted the Middle East and Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America, India, and Southeast Asia as recovery markets. Conditions varied by country, so a global growth figure should not be read as a uniform regional rise.
- 5G and product refreshes supported replacements. Some buyers were moving from older 4G devices to 5G phones, but affordability, network availability, and the appeal of upgrades differ widely across markets. 5G alone does not explain the rebound.
- Promotions and channel replenishment mattered. Competitive launches and discounts can encourage purchases, while retailers’ restocking can boost shipments before end-user demand has fully strengthened.
- Premiumization lifted value alongside units. Counterpoint said average selling price reached its highest level for a second quarter in its dataset and reported 8% growth in smartphone revenue. Higher prices and a more premium mix can lift revenue without a matching improvement in mass-market unit demand—and do not prove that every vendor’s margins improved.
Generative AI was a prominent expectation for the second half of 2024, not a demonstrated explanation for most Q2 purchases. IDC described the quarter as a prelude to a larger expected wave of GenAI smartphones. That was a forward-looking industry view: it should not be confused with proof that consumers had already bought phones primarily for AI features.

IDC said all five leading companies posted year-over-year gains in its Q2 results, while competition intensified across price bands. A vendor’s shipment growth or unit share is not the same as revenue leadership, profitability, or success in every region.

- Samsung benefited from Galaxy S24 momentum and strength in its Galaxy A range. Counterpoint said Samsung retained the global shipment lead and placed five models among its top 10 best-selling smartphones.
- Apple showed only marginal shipment growth in Counterpoint’s data, yet led its reported global smartphone revenue share at 42%. That contrast illustrates how premium pricing can make a company a value leader without making it the unit leader. Apple also faced pressure in China; Counterpoint said discounts during the 618 shopping festival improved sales.
- Xiaomi was Counterpoint’s fastest-growing top-five vendor, with 27% year-over-year shipment growth in its dataset.
- vivo benefited particularly from China, India, and South Asian markets, according to Counterpoint.
- Huawei, HONOR, Motorola, and Transsion also gained momentum in Counterpoint’s analysis, with results tied to their geographic and price-band strengths.
These vendor-specific observations come from Counterpoint’s dataset and should not be mixed with IDC’s company rankings as if the underlying estimates were interchangeable. Growth can reflect product-cycle timing, promotions, regional mix, or share taken from a competitor; it does not by itself show higher profit.
A global recovery, but not an even one
Emerging markets were important growth engines, while mature markets faced longer replacement cycles and consumers who could keep existing phones longer. China was a particularly competitive and promotion-sensitive market. India, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America offered growth opportunities, but affordability and local economic conditions shaped demand.

Inflation, currency movements, subsidies, component costs, handset prices, and inventory levels can all affect local results. There is no single harmonized regional percentage in the cited evidence that can be applied across trackers, so the regional picture is best described directionally: recovery was uneven, not universal.

Was this a genuine revival?
Yes, in the limited sense that worldwide shipment volumes were rising again; no, if “revival” means a complete or durable return to broad-based growth. Four consecutive quarters of year-over-year increases made Q2 2024 more than a one-quarter blip in IDC’s series. But IDC also cautioned that demand remained challenged in some markets. A weak comparison base, channel restocking, longer upgrade cycles, and divergent performance by region and price tier all temper the headline.

A fuller recovery would need to show sustained growth beyond an easy year-earlier comparison, healthier consumer sell-through rather than shipment growth alone, breadth across regions and price tiers, and value gains that translate into sound vendor economics. Premium sales can raise average prices while budget-conscious buyers remain constrained; an emerging-market volume gain can come with thinner margins; and a product narrative such as AI only matters commercially if it persuades people to upgrade.
What happened after Q2 2024?
Q2 2024 should be read as a historical recovery milestone, not a current growth rate. Later IDC reporting shows how quickly market conditions can change: IDC reported a 2.9% year-over-year shipment decline in Q1 2026 and subsequently forecast a 13.9% full-year decline for 2026, citing memory-supply constraints and higher component costs.
