Smartcat announced a $43 million Series C financing on September 10, 2024, led by Left Lane Capital. The company said the funding would support hiring, product development, marketing, sales, and expanded AI offerings for global teams. Contemporary reporting put Smartcat’s total funding at approximately $70 million after the round.
The deal reflects investor interest in enterprise software that helps companies create, translate, review, and manage multilingual content. It does not, however, prove that Smartcat has solved translation quality, replaced human linguists, or become the market leader.
What happened in Smartcat’s funding round?
Smartcat raised $43 million in Series C funding, according to the company’s announcement and contemporaneous TechCrunch reporting. Left Lane Capital led the round. TechCrunch reported that the financing brought Smartcat’s cumulative funding to approximately $70 million at the time.

What is Smartcat?
Founded in 2016, Smartcat was spun out of ABBYY Language Solutions. Its founder and CEO, Ivan Smolnikov, previously founded ABBYY LS and has a background in physics and language-services entrepreneurship.
Smartcat is not simply a machine-translation website or a conventional translation agency. It combines software with access to translators, editors, agencies, and subject-matter experts. The company’s pitch is that enterprises can manage the full language workflow in one environment rather than separately buying translation software, hiring vendors, coordinating reviewers, and processing payments.
What does Smartcat’s platform do?
Smartcat is best understood as a language-operations platform made up of several layers:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- AI translation: Automated translation for written content across supported language pairs.
- Translation memory and computer-assisted translation: Reuse of approved translations and terminology to improve consistency.
- Project management: Assignment, workflow, approvals, collaboration, and review.
- Human translation and editing: Access to linguists and copy editors when automated output is not sufficient.
- AI content creation: Tools for generating or adapting multilingual material, including learning content.
- Video localization: Transcription, subtitles, translation, voice replacement, and dubbing workflows, subject to the features and fees of the relevant plan.
- Marketplace and procurement: Access to linguists and agencies, together with vendor management, invoicing, and payment infrastructure.
- Integrations: Connections with content-management, design, developer, commerce, and productivity tools.
Smartcat told TechCrunch that its matching engine can select an appropriate third-party translation model for a particular language pair or type of content. Customers may also fine-tune or use customer-trained models where their terminology and previous translation data justify customization.
That distinction matters. Smartcat’s apparent differentiation is primarily orchestration, workflow, enterprise context, and human-in-the-loop operations—not ownership of one exclusive translation foundation model.
Who uses Smartcat?
At the time of the funding announcement, Smartcat said it had more than 1,000 corporate customers and that approximately 20% of Fortune 500 companies were customers. The company also cited local and international government customers and reported a workforce of roughly 200 employees.
Those figures are company-supplied or reported from company statements, not independently audited market measurements. Smartcat currently advertises support for more than 280 languages and, in later company materials, a marketplace of more than 500,000 experts. Those current claims should not be retroactively treated as the size of the marketplace in September 2024.
Why investors may see an opportunity
The investment thesis is broader than “people need machine translation.” Enterprises increasingly need to publish websites, product documentation, software, support material, training courses, marketing campaigns, and videos in multiple languages. Managing that work across disconnected tools and vendors can create delays, inconsistent terminology, duplicate effort, and difficult procurement processes.
Smartcat is trying to become the coordination layer for that activity. Its potential value comes from combining:
- Faster first drafts and higher translation throughput;
- Reuse of translation memories and approved terminology;
- Centralized review and approvals;
- Routing among translation engines and human providers;
- Connections to existing content systems; and
- Consolidated vendor, billing, and reporting workflows.
The funding therefore signals investor confidence in enterprise language workflows and AI-assisted content production. It is not evidence, by itself, that Smartcat has achieved market leadership, universal translation quality, profitability, or a particular valuation.
Newer product direction: video and learning content
AI video translation and dubbing
Smartcat highlighted video translation and dubbing as an important expansion area. Video localization can involve several distinct services:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Transcribing speech;
- Translating scripts;
- Creating or burning in subtitles;
- Replacing voices through dubbing; and
- Synchronizing speech and, where available, mouth movements.
These are not interchangeable features. A buyer should confirm which capabilities are included in its plan, what requires additional payment, and what level of human review is available. Smartcat’s current LSP pricing information indicates that AI dubbing may involve additional fees.
AI learning-content creation
Smartcat has also described tools for learning-and-development teams to create courses, microlearning, instructional videos, quizzes, and AI video avatars, then translate that material into multiple languages. This moves the company beyond translating finished documents: it is also positioning the platform as a tool for generating and adapting content before localization.
Can AI replace translators?
Not reliably for every use case. AI translation can be useful for internal documents, first drafts, repetitive material, high-volume lower-risk content, and support content supported by human sampling. Translation memories and terminology glossaries can further improve consistency.
Human review remains particularly important for legal, medical, financial, regulatory, safety-sensitive, brand-critical, culturally sensitive, creative, and literary content. It is also important for low-resource languages and material involving humor, ambiguity, idioms, or complex social context.

- Offline Translation in 19+ Language Pairs – Stay connected even without internet access! This electronic foreign language translator supports offline translation for key language pairs, ensuring uninterrupted communication.
As TechCrunch noted, technically accurate output may still sound generic, have limited lexical richness, or miss cultural nuance. Smartcat’s own combination of AI with paid translators and copy editors reflects the practical reality that automation is not sufficient for every workflow.
Quality depends on the language pair, content type, terminology, model selection, review process, and risk tolerance. Strong English-to-Spanish results should not be generalized to every one of the company’s advertised languages.
How Smartcat makes money
Smartcat’s commercial model appears to combine several revenue streams:
- Software subscriptions;
- Usage-based AI allowances, including Smartwords;
- Enterprise contracts;
- Marketplace and managed translation services;
- Fees connected with hiring and paying linguists or agencies; and
- Additional charges for multimedia services such as dubbing, implementation, and custom integrations.
Smartcat’s public pricing is a current reference point, not necessarily the pricing that applied when the Series C was announced. Its pricing page currently lists:
| Plan | Published starting price |
|---|---|
| Adapt | $1,200 per year |
| Accelerate | $24,000 per year |
| Anticipate | $60,000 per year |
| Autonomous | Custom pricing |
The page also lists a 15-day free trial. Its separate LSP page lists a basic package starting at $1,200 per year, enterprise pricing by quotation, and marketplace service fees of 5% for the basic organization or agency tier and 0.5% for enterprise.
These annual starting prices do not necessarily show the full cost. Buyers should account for usage, additional workspaces, human review, dubbing, implementation, integrations, quality assurance, and enterprise support.

Smartcat competes with more than other AI translation companies. It also competes with traditional agencies, in-house localization teams, freelancers, and companies that build internal workflows around Google, Microsoft, Amazon, or DeepL APIs.
Translation engines and AI-human providers
- DeepL: Primarily a translation, writing-assistance, voice, API, and enterprise language product. It may suit buyers seeking a focused translation engine or API rather than a broad marketplace and procurement layer.
- Lilt: An enterprise provider combining AI-assisted and human translation workflows.
- Lengoo: A business-focused AI translation and localization provider.
- EasyTranslate: A translation-services company with AI-assisted workflows.
- D-ID: A broader generative-video company with relevance to multilingual video and localization.
Localization-management platforms
Phrase, Lokalise, Transifex, and Crowdin are relevant alternatives for teams managing software, websites, digital products, developer content, or broader localization pipelines. The best choice depends on whether the buyer prioritizes developer workflows, translation management, a human marketplace, procurement, or AI model orchestration.
Traditional alternatives
A translation agency or in-house department may remain preferable when a project requires deep subject-matter expertise, established accountability, strict review processes, or highly creative rewriting. A simple standalone translation tool may be more economical for occasional or low-volume work.
The central comparison is not merely which product produces the best sentence. It is which option provides the right combination of quality, speed, terminology control, integrations, security, governance, human review, and total cost.
What buyers should evaluate
Smartcat may fit well when:
- Several departments manage recurring multilingual content;
- The organization works across many languages and formats;
- AI translation and optional human review are needed in the same workflow;
- Translation memory, terminology, approvals, reporting, and vendor management matter; or
- The company wants to coordinate multiple providers rather than rely on one engine.
It may be a poor fit when:
- The need is occasional short translation;
- Only one language pair and a small volume are involved;
- A consumer translator or simple API is sufficient;
- The buyer requires independently validated quality benchmarks that are unavailable; or
- Annual platform fees and implementation exceed the savings from automation.
Risks and unanswered questions
Smartcat’s funding announcement did not establish several facts that matter to enterprise buyers and investors:
- Quality: Vendor claims about accuracy, “near-human” output, or major cost savings are not universal guarantees.
- Low-resource languages: Performance may vary sharply by language pair and content type.
- Data governance: Buyers should verify retention, training use, access controls, encryption, data residency, subprocessors, and contractual protections before uploading confidential material.
- Third-party model dependence: Routing among external engines can reduce dependence on one provider, but model updates may change output quality and behavior.
- Human-review economics: Review improves reliability but adds cost and can create bottlenecks.
- Marketplace consistency: A large expert pool does not prove uniform translator quality.
- Financial transparency: The cited coverage did not disclose revenue, valuation, gross margin, retention, or profitability.
TechCrunch also reported historical complaints from some translators involving dishonest or non-paying clients. Smartcat’s CEO said those problems had been addressed. That is reported history and the company’s response, not an independent finding about current marketplace performance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBottom line
Smartcat’s $43 million Series C, led by Left Lane Capital, reflects confidence in the idea that enterprise language work can become a broader AI-assisted operating layer. Smartcat combines translation engines, translation memories, workflow software, human linguists, content creation, video localization, marketplace services, and procurement tools.
The financing is meaningful competitive momentum, but it is not proof that AI has made human translation obsolete or that Smartcat delivers the same quality across every language and use case. For enterprises, the key question is whether the platform’s workflow, governance, integrations, and optional human review justify its total cost compared with a standalone engine, a localization platform, an agency, or an internal team.
