Yes—Series Entertainment really raised nearly $28 million. The company’s SEC Form D reports a fully sold $27,999,999 equity offering, with the first sale recorded on August 9, 2024. TechCrunch later reported that the financing was an oversubscribed Series A backed by Netflix, Dell Technologies Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, BITKRAFT and F4 Fund.
The distinction matters: the SEC filing confirms the amount, timing, security type and number of investors, but it does not name the investors or call the transaction a Series A. Those details come from TechCrunch’s reporting and company confirmation.
What the SEC filing confirms
Series Entertainment Inc., a Delaware corporation formed in 2023, filed a notice of an exempt securities offering with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

#1 Best Overall
TechCrunch reported on September 30, 2024, that Series and the company described the financing as a $28 million Series A. The cleanest description is therefore: Series disclosed a $27,999,999 equity offering, which TechCrunch reported was a $28 million Series A.
Who invested?
TechCrunch identified the reported backers as:
- Netflix
- Dell Technologies Capital
- Andreessen Horowitz, commonly known as a16z
- BITKRAFT
- F4 Fund
The SEC filing says there were six investors, while the reported roster names five organizations. The filing does not reconcile that difference publicly by naming every investor.
TechCrunch described Netflix and Dell Technologies Capital as investors in the Series A, while a16z, BITKRAFT and F4 Fund were reported as follow-on investors from Series’ earlier seed round. Series had previously raised a reported $7.9 million seed round led by a16z in 2023.

Netflix’s investment indicates interest in the company, yet the available reporting does not establish a Netflix distribution agreement, exclusive game, licensing deal, or commitment to use Series’ technology. Likewise, Dell’s participation does not by itself prove a hardware, cloud or infrastructure partnership.

What Series is building
Series has described itself as both a game studio and a technology company. Its central product ambition was Rho Engine, an AI-native, multimodal game editor and authoring engine.
Rank #2
In practical terms, the company’s stated goal was to put generative systems closer to the core of game development—not merely add an AI chatbot to an existing workflow. The platform was intended to help developers:
- Generate game assets and other visual content
- Create audio and interactive experiences
- Make non-player characters more responsive
- Support richer player customization
- Speed up game development
a16z’s 2023 announcement described Rho Engine as a game editor and authoring engine purpose-built for generative models. TechCrunch contrasted that positioning with AI tools aimed mainly at testing or assistance, including Modl.ai’s testing-focused product and Unity’s more assistant-like Muse Chat.
However, the reviewed public material does not establish that Rho Engine is a publicly available, production-ready replacement for established engines. Series’ website describes AI development tools and franchise games, but does not publicly provide pricing, technical documentation, a self-serve signup flow or a public Rho Engine release.
a16z’s investment announcement provides the investor’s description of the company and its strategy.
Why the “new Unity” comparison is both useful and premature
Series has been framed as potentially becoming “the new Unity.” That is a strategic ambition, not an independently demonstrated market position.

- Ideal for Gifting
- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
- AI assistants: help with coding, brainstorming or workflow tasks.
- AI asset tools: generate images, models, animation, music or sound effects.
- AI testing tools: inspect builds, detect bugs and automate quality assurance.
- AI-native authoring engines: attempt to integrate generative systems into the game-production environment itself.
Series was positioning Rho in the last category. That could be more ambitious than an asset generator or coding assistant, but it also creates a larger execution challenge. A serious development platform must support repeatable builds, inspectable and editable outputs, version control, testing, deployment, live operations and predictable costs—not just impressive prototypes.
Pixelberry made Series more than a software startup
In July 2024, Series acquired Pixelberry Studios, the mobile-game developer best known for Choices: Stories You Play.
The acquisition gave Series an operating game studio and an existing portfolio alongside its platform ambitions. That is strategically important because Series was not relying solely on selling tools to outside developers. It could also develop games internally and potentially use its own studio as a setting for testing new workflows.
The available reporting does not establish that Pixelberry’s existing games were made with Rho Engine, or that the acquisition was specifically made for an AI integration. The acquisition’s terms were also not disclosed in the reviewed sources.
Who is Pany Haritatos?
Series is led by Panayoti “Pany” Haritatos. The SEC filing uses the name Panayoti Haritatos, while media coverage commonly uses Pany.
According to a16z and TechCrunch, Haritatos:
- Founded a browser-game studio during the Flash era and sold it to Zynga
- Founded a later mobile-game studio that was sold to Kongregate
- Became Kongregate’s CEO
- Later led Snap’s games group, including augmented-reality and embedded-game initiatives
That history helps explain the investment thesis. Haritatos has operated through several platform shifts in games, from browser games to mobile, social and augmented-reality experiences. Investor confidence in that experience is not the same as proof that Rho Engine will succeed, but it is relevant context for the round.

How large was Series?
TechCrunch reported that Series grew from 17 employees at the beginning of 2024 to more than 100 by September 2024, based on company-provided information. That is a company-reported headcount, not an independently audited figure.
The rapid increase reflects the scale of the company’s stated plan: operating a game studio while also developing a general-purpose AI game-creation platform. It also highlights the capital intensity of the strategy. Building models, tools, games and production infrastructure at the same time can require substantially more funding than pursuing only one of those businesses.
What valuation did the financing imply?
PitchBook estimated that the round represented approximately 15% of the company, implying a post-money valuation of roughly $190 million. Series declined to comment on the accuracy of that estimate.
That figure should not be presented as Series’ disclosed valuation. It is an external estimate derived from reported ownership and financing information.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What would determine whether Rho Engine succeeds?
The central question is not whether generative AI can produce a game asset or prototype. It is whether developers can use the system reliably in production.
1. Output and portability
Can Rho produce a playable build, or does it mainly generate assets and prototypes? Can teams export projects to established engines? Can generated code and content meet production requirements?
2. Human control
Professional teams need to inspect, edit, reproduce and roll back changes. A system that produces attractive but opaque or nondeterministic output may be useful for ideation while remaining difficult to operate at scale.
3. Multimodal consistency
Characters, environments, animation, dialogue and audio must remain coherent across scenes and updates. Revising one asset without breaking the rest of a project is a practical test of an AI-native workflow.
4. Runtime economics
AI used during development has a different cost profile from AI used during gameplay. Live NPCs, personalization and dynamic content may require ongoing inference, hosting and moderation costs for every active player.

5. Intellectual-property controls
Studios will need clear answers about training data, ownership of generated assets, third-party likenesses and voices, copyrighted styles, music rights and whether customer data can be used to train future models.
6. Production tooling
A platform must eventually address software development kits, APIs, versioning, automated testing, build pipelines, analytics, deployment and live operations. Those details were not publicly documented in the reviewed material.
The strategic trade-offs
- Speed versus control: Generative workflows may accelerate prototyping but make debugging and exact reproduction more difficult.
- More content versus stronger identity: Producing content cheaply does not guarantee distinctive or higher-quality games.
- Dynamic interaction versus operating expense: AI-driven gameplay can create new experiences but may add per-player serving costs.
- Platform ambition versus execution risk: Building an internal studio and a general-purpose engine expands both the opportunity and the technical scope.
- Strategic investors versus commercial proof: A Netflix investment is meaningful investor validation, but it is not evidence of a customer contract or distribution deal.
What remains unverified
Based on the available sources, readers should not assume that:
- Netflix uses Rho Engine or has committed to a Series game
- Rho is publicly available to individual developers
- Rho has achieved Unity-scale adoption or functionality
- Pixelberry’s games were built with Rho
- AI-generated output is production-quality without substantial human review
- Series has disclosed pricing, customer numbers, platform support or inference costs
- The estimated $190 million valuation is confirmed by the company
Those are the questions that separate a compelling funding story from a proven software business.
