The semiconductor market is not slowing at the aggregate level in 2026. Current forecasts point to exceptional growth, with estimates ranging from roughly $1.32 trillion to $1.51 trillion in global semiconductor revenue. The more important concern is what happens underneath that headline: growth is heavily concentrated in AI accelerators, advanced logic, high-bandwidth memory and data-center infrastructure, while many traditional chip categories are expanding much more slowly.
For investors and businesses, that means a slowdown may appear first through falling memory prices, weaker non-AI demand, slower capital spending or lower growth rates—not necessarily through an immediate decline in total industry revenue.
Is the semiconductor market actually slowing?
Not yet, based on the major 2026 forecasts. WSTS projects approximately $1.51 trillion in global semiconductor sales in 2026, representing about 90% growth. Gartner forecasts approximately $1.3202 trillion, up from $805.3 billion in 2025. SIA has also cited a WSTS projection of roughly $1.5 trillion.
These are forecasts, not finalized annual results, and they are not directly interchangeable. They use different publication dates, market definitions, product classifications and assumptions about AI-chip shipments and memory pricing.

|---|---|---|---|
| WSTS | About $1.51 trillion | About 90% | Memory and AI infrastructure |
| Gartner | $1.3202 trillion | 64% | AI demand and memory-price inflation |
| SIA/WSTS reference | About $1.5 trillion | Not specified | AI, computing, communications and other applications |
The distinction matters because “slowdown” can mean several different things:
- Slower year-over-year revenue growth.
- Lower chip prices despite stable unit shipments.
- Weakness in traditional end markets.
- Lower profit margins or capital spending.
- An outright decline in total semiconductor sales.
The current evidence supports the first four as possible risks, but not an aggregate 2026 contraction.
AI is powering the current boom
The largest growth engine is spending on artificial-intelligence infrastructure. That includes GPUs, custom accelerators, server CPUs, networking processors and the supporting silicon used inside data centers.
Gartner expects AI semiconductors to represent approximately 30% of total semiconductor revenue in 2026 and forecasts hyperscaler AI-infrastructure spending to increase by more than 50%. This concentration helps explain why the overall market can post extraordinary growth even while other applications recover only gradually.
The AI supply chain extends beyond the processor itself. It includes:

WSTS forecasts logic growth of approximately 37% in 2026. SIA also identifies advanced computing, 5G and emerging 6G communications, healthcare devices and defense systems as important sources of semiconductor demand, although these areas should not be assumed to be growing as quickly as AI data-center silicon.
Memory prices are inflating the headline
Memory is central to the 2026 forecast, particularly HBM used alongside advanced AI accelerators. HBM provides very high memory bandwidth in a compact package, but its production also creates demand for DRAM wafers, advanced packaging and testing capacity.

WSTS projects approximately 250% growth for memory in 2026. Gartner forecasts DRAM prices to rise 125% and NAND prices 234% during the year, with meaningful pricing relief not expected until late 2027.
This creates an important distinction between price-led growth and volume-led growth. Semiconductor revenue can rise sharply because customers are paying more for memory, even if the number of bits or devices shipped does not increase proportionally.
High prices can also weaken downstream demand. More expensive memory raises the cost of servers, PCs, smartphones and storage systems. Some buyers may delay upgrades, reduce configurations or postpone projects. Once new supply arrives and prices normalize, industry revenue could slow considerably even if unit shipments remain stable.

The market is splitting by segment
WSTS’s 2026 projections show why a single industry growth rate can be misleading:
Recommended Free Tools
| Segment | Approximate 2026 growth |
|---|---|
| Memory | 250% |
| Logic | 37% |
| Microprocessors | 20% |
| Analog | 10% |
| Discrete semiconductors | 8% |
| Sensors and optoelectronics | 3% |
These figures do not show a universal collapse. Analog, discrete, sensor and optoelectronics categories are still projected to grow. They do show a sharply uneven cycle, with AI-linked memory and logic expanding far faster than many products used in industrial equipment, consumer electronics, vehicles and general-purpose systems.
A company focused on commodity memory can therefore face very different conditions from a company selling networking silicon, advanced packaging services or specialty analog chips. Industry growth does not guarantee that every semiconductor company or fund benefits equally.
Where could the slowdown emerge?
1. AI infrastructure spending may normalize
The current growth rate depends on continued investment by hyperscalers and other data-center operators. Growth could decelerate if data-center construction is delayed, power availability becomes constrained, AI workloads produce lower returns than expected or customers shift toward more efficient models.
Other possible changes include a greater emphasis on inference rather than training, custom silicon replacing some merchant GPUs, and tighter export controls or trade restrictions. These are scenarios, not proof of an imminent collapse.

- (BLE), 802.15.4 (Thread, Zigbee) operating at 2.4GHz frequency for versatile wireless development
- Integrated Antenna: Features PCB trace antenna built directly on-board for immediate testing and development without requiring external antenna components
2. Memory inflation cannot continue indefinitely
High memory prices encourage suppliers to add capacity, but they also pressure buyers. As supply expands, prices may stabilize or fall. That would reduce the revenue contribution from memory even if underlying AI usage remains strong.
Better AI efficiency creates a similar ambiguity. More efficient models could require fewer chips per task, but lower costs could also make AI services affordable to more users and increase total demand.
3. Capacity additions may create a later surplus
The semiconductor cycle often operates with a delay:
- Demand rises and prices increase.
- Manufacturers raise capital spending.
- New fabs, packaging lines and equipment take time to become operational.
- Supply catches up with demand—or overshoots it.
- Prices, utilization and margins weaken.
Gartner forecasts semiconductor capital spending to rise 16.4% in 2026 and 11.2% in 2027. It expects the next cyclical pause in semiconductor capital spending around 2028. That is a risk window, not a guaranteed forecast that total semiconductor revenue will decline in 2028.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why forecasts differ so widely
The gap between a $1.32 trillion Gartner forecast and a $1.51 trillion WSTS forecast does not automatically mean one organization is wrong. Differences can result from:
- Forecasts being published at different times.
- Different definitions of the semiconductor market.
- Different assumptions about DRAM, NAND and HBM prices.
- Different estimates for AI-accelerator shipments.
- Currency, regional and company-revenue methodology.
- Uncertainty surrounding rapidly changing AI infrastructure plans.
Historical figures also vary by reporting update. SIA reported 2025 global sales of $791.7 billion in one release and cited $795.6 billion in its 2026 industry report. Readers should compare like-for-like data and identify the publication date rather than combine figures casually.

What to watch next
Investors, procurement teams and industry analysts can monitor these indicators to distinguish continued expansion from an approaching slowdown:
- Hyperscaler capital expenditure: Is spending still accelerating, or merely increasing more slowly?
- HBM and DRAM pricing: Rising prices support revenue, while a sharp correction could expose excess capacity.
- AI-accelerator orders: Watch demand from major data-center customers and changes in product mix.
- Advanced-packaging capacity: Packaging constraints can limit chip shipments even when wafer capacity is available.
- Foundry utilization: Lower leading-edge utilization would signal weaker demand or delayed projects.
- Equipment bookings: Falling orders may precede a capital-spending pause.
- Inventory levels: Accumulating inventory among distributors and device makers can precede price pressure.
- Traditional electronics demand: PC, smartphone, automotive and industrial trends show whether growth is broadening.
- Power and construction constraints: AI-chip demand depends on data-center buildings, electricity, cooling and networking—not just silicon.
