Seattle-founded infrastructure startup Momento announced a $15 million Series A on July 18, 2024, led by Bain Capital Ventures, with The General Partnership participating. Founded by former AWS DynamoDB engineers Khawaja Shams and Daniela Miao, the company set out to reduce the work involved in building and operating fast data services. Its product direction has since shifted: Momento’s public portfolio now centers on Valkey infrastructure, so the 2024 funding story and the company’s current offering are distinct parts of the picture.
What Momento announced in July 2024
The July 18, 2024 announcement paired financing news with the general availability of Momento Topics, a low-latency messaging product. Momento said it would use the Series A to expand enterprise sales, add platform features, and support new AI workloads. The round was a milestone in the company’s growth, not a recent 2026 financing announcement.
- Series A: $15 million, led by Bain Capital Ventures, with The General Partnership participating.
- Reported funding total: $30 million after the Series A, including a $15 million seed round announced in November 2022.
- Company scale at the time: GeekWire reported about 30 employees and a fully remote team; the 2024 announcement also referred to a Tokyo office supporting expansion in Japan.

Momento did not disclose revenue or profitability in the GeekWire coverage. Funding demonstrates investor backing; it does not establish that the company is profitable, has achieved product-market fit, or has a particular market share.

Who founded Momento, and why their AWS experience matters
Momento was founded in 2021 by Khawaja Shams, its co-founder and CEO, and Daniela Miao, its co-founder and CTO. Both had worked on Amazon DynamoDB engineering. Shams previously worked as a roboticist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, while Miao later served as a director at LightStep, acquired by ServiceNow.
That background is relevant because the company’s pitch concerns the engineering burden that can emerge when applications need fast access to data at high scale. Experience with a large distributed database gives the founders pertinent context, but it is not independent proof that Momento is faster, more reliable, less expensive, or a better fit than alternatives.

Applications often request the same information repeatedly: a game may repeatedly check a player’s session, a media service may serve popular content to many viewers, and an online product may need to retrieve frequently used account or configuration data. A cache holds frequently requested information in a fast-access layer, which can reduce response time and the load on the primary database.
Traditional Redis- or Memcached-style deployments can also require teams to size capacity, configure clusters, plan for failover, apply updates, and respond to traffic changes. Momento’s original pitch was to offer caching as a serverless service, so developers could use the capability without directly managing cache nodes or clusters. The company described elastic capacity, high availability, and handling traffic spikes as benefits of its approach.
In its November 2022 seed announcement, Momento claimed its serverless cache could save customers 50%–90% of their caching bill. That is a company claim, not a general result established for all workloads or customers. Actual savings depend on traffic patterns, capacity choices, service charges, and the cost of operating an alternative.

What Momento offered at the time of the Series A
In 2024, Momento described a broader managed platform that included cache, storage, and publish/subscribe messaging. These are related infrastructure services, but they serve different purposes: a cache provides quick access to frequently used data, storage retains data, and pub/sub messaging distributes events between systems.

The company positioned Cache as serverless caching and fast key-value access. It was intended for products where repeated reads and changing demand make cache capacity and operations important. Momento’s product page described pay-as-you-go pricing, including a first 5 million operations per month free and then $1 per million operations. Because the public portfolio was later reorganized around Valkey, buyers should confirm directly whether those terms and product availability apply to their intended use.

Momento Topics
Topics was announced as generally available alongside the Series A. It was designed as a low-latency event bus or pub/sub service for connecting devices and servers. This kind of service can help applications distribute updates or events without requiring teams to build every messaging component themselves.

Momento Storage and cited customer examples
Momento’s broader 2024 platform materials also described a managed storage service. Company and news coverage cited Wyze Labs and ZigZaGame, while Momento’s financing announcement named CBS, ProSieben, NTT DOCOMO, Paramount, and Taco Bell. These are customer references, not independent evaluations of performance or evidence that every named organization used every product. Momento’s later website also displays additional customer logos; a logo alone does not establish a deployment’s scope, duration, or current status.

What “help companies ship faster” means—and what it does not prove
In practical terms, outsourcing parts of cache or messaging operations could let developers spend less time provisioning and resizing infrastructure, designing failover procedures, and maintaining specialized systems. APIs, client libraries, or integrations can also shorten the work of connecting an application to a service. Those benefits may matter to teams handling bursts of demand in gaming, media, IoT, consumer applications, or AI products, especially if they lack a large platform-engineering group.

But “ship faster” is an operational promise, not a measured result for every customer. The available reporting does not establish a universal reduction in deployment time, engineering headcount, latency, or total cost. A team should measure the effect against its own workload and compare the service’s cost with the engineering effort and reliability risks it would otherwise take on.
How Momento’s product direction changed
Momento’s current public positioning is more focused on Valkey infrastructure than the 2024 story of serverless Cache plus Topics. In a November 12, 2025 product update, the company said it was reorganizing its portfolio around Valkey, with products for managed service, runtime images, and operating Valkey across cloud and hybrid environments.
Valkey Router
Momento describes Router as a gateway layer for Valkey that can handle connection pooling, request coalescing, throttling, TLS termination, JWT authentication, HTTP access, and client fan-out. These features target operational and access-management needs around a Valkey deployment rather than replacing Valkey’s role as a data store.

The Operator is a Kubernetes-native control layer for managing Valkey clusters, policies, namespaces, versions, and pod lifecycles. Momento says it supports CNCF-conformant Kubernetes distributions including EKS, GKE, AKS, and on-premises Kubernetes 1.24 or later. This is relevant to teams already operating Kubernetes; it is not automatically simpler than a fully managed service.

Valkey Enterprise Image
Momento describes its Enterprise Image as a hardened, tuned, CVE-patched Valkey runtime with optional modules. Buyers should clarify which modules, support arrangements, and deployment responsibilities apply to the specific product and contract they are considering.

Momento is one operating model, not a universal replacement for every cache or Redis-compatible system. The right comparison depends on whether a team wants a managed service, controls its own Kubernetes deployment, or prefers a cloud provider’s native offering.

These are comparison categories, not a feature-by-feature or price ranking. Momento itself has described Amazon ElastiCache, Dragonfly, Google Memorystore, and other managed Redis providers as part of the competitive ecosystem. Cost and compatibility questions buyers should settle
Momento’s public Valkey pricing page separates charges by product layer. The figures below are the public price signals stated on the page; they are not an all-in estimate, and the page or a sales quote should be checked for current terms before budgeting.

The pricing page presents distinct billing units, so do not compare one line item with a competitor’s all-in bill. Traffic, capacity, modules, support, and underlying cloud infrastructure may all affect total cost. The AWS Marketplace listing also describes contract-based pricing, usage charges, support tiers, and potentially additional AWS infrastructure charges.

Before committing, a buyer should ask:
- Which product is being evaluated: managed Valkey, Operator, Enterprise Image, Cache, Topics, or Media Storage?
- Is the deployment SaaS, self-managed, or BYOC, and who is responsible for cloud resources and on-call response?
- Which Redis or Valkey commands, modules, persistence behavior, transactions, and replication semantics does the application require?
- How are backups, recovery objectives, hot keys, connection spikes, traffic bursts, and region failures handled?
- What are the data-transfer, egress, support, and minimum-commitment costs, and what would migration away involve?
- Which published performance claims apply to the buyer’s own workload, hardware, and configuration?
When Momento may—or may not—fit
It may suit teams that
- Need fast data access but prefer not to operate cache clusters directly.
- Have bursty or unpredictable traffic and value managed controls for scaling, routing, authentication, or failover.
- Use Valkey-compatible infrastructure and want additional operational guardrails.
- Want to reduce platform-engineering work, and judge that the potential labor or incident savings justify the service cost.
It may be a poor fit for teams that
- Need tight control over nodes, operating systems, networking, or deployment topology.
- Run a small, steady workload cheaply on an existing managed service and gain little from changing it.
- Already have mature Redis or Valkey operations and prefer to keep that responsibility in-house.
- Depend on commands, modules, persistence, transactions, replication behavior, or operational features that their selected Momento product does not support.
- Have data-residency, compliance, egress, or vendor-dependence constraints that rule out the service.
What the public evidence can and cannot establish
Momento’s current platform materials claim that its optimized Valkey flavor can exceed 1 million operations per second on eight ARM cores with 250-microsecond client-side p99 latency. These are company-reported figures; the cited material does not establish a neutral, independently validated benchmark across workloads. Buyers should request the workload, configuration, hardware, and methodology behind any performance figure they plan to rely on.
Momento also presents customer logos and performance-oriented positioning on its site. Those references do not, on their own, show the scope or current status of a customer deployment. The reported $15 million Series A likewise says something about financing, not revenue, profitability, customer retention, or market leadership.
