Sarah’s Books is a book-discovery web app built around former Seattle founder Sarah Ritter’s personal taste. Ritter used Anthropic’s Claude to help catalog her collection and build the app, while her own curation supplies its point of view. The result is not evidence that AI has replaced booksellers—or that the app is a proven business. It is a small, personal project with options to explore library borrowing, independent-bookstore purchases, and audiobooks.
What Sarah’s Books does
Sarah’s Books combines Ritter’s collection and editorial choices with AI-assisted suggestions beyond the books she owns. Readers can create a free profile, add books, share favorite authors, and get recommendations, according to GeekWire’s February 11, 2026 report. The app organizes discovery through both familiar genres—such as mystery, fantasy, and historical fiction—and mood or theme categories including “emotional truth” and “beach read.”
It is best understood as a hybrid: a personal recommendation experience with elements of cataloging and profile-based discovery. The available reporting does not establish that it is a full social network, nor does it provide a hands-on assessment of recommendation quality, usability, or current feature availability.

Human taste is the product’s defining ingredient
The app’s distinction is not simply that it uses AI to name books. Ritter’s physical collection, selected titles, thematic categories, and descriptions give it a recognizable human point of view. AI extends that curation by suggesting books outside her shelves. That can make discovery feel more specific than a broad genre label, while also making the recommendations closely tied to one person’s sensibilities.

That trade-off matters. A personal curator can offer coherence and an identifiable voice, but one person’s reading history may not represent every reader or every perspective. GeekWire does not report independent testing that would show how well the recommendations work for different users, how diverse they are, or whether the app explains why it suggests a particular title.
What AI did—and what “trained” does not prove
GeekWire reports that Claude helped Ritter inventory and index photographs of her books. Ritter also assembled a Google document containing themes, genres, titles, and descriptions to organize the material. AI then helped with suggestions beyond the collection and with developing the application.
Ritter has described the recommendation algorithm as trained around her taste. That phrase is not enough to establish that she trained a machine-learning model from scratch. The report does not specify whether recommendations rely on prompts, curated metadata, retrieval rules, a model API at runtime, or another technical arrangement. It also does not explain what user data is stored or sent to AI providers, or whether reading data is used to improve recommendations.

Those unknowns are relevant to readers sharing profiles or reading preferences. Before entering personal information, check the app’s current privacy terms and account controls on Sarah’s Books. The reporting does not establish whether profiles or reading lists are public by default, how long data is retained, or whether the service is designed for children.
Vibe coding, in this project
“Vibe coding” is used here to describe building software with an AI assistant as an active coding partner. Ritter directed the project, curated the books and categories, and made product decisions; Claude helped with cataloging and development. The account is of a founder using AI to extend her own capabilities, not of AI independently conceiving and shipping a complete product.
Ritter says she spent more than 350 hours coding and produced about 100,000 lines of code and 2,000 Git commits. These are founder-reported figures, not audited measures. Lines of code can include generated or boilerplate material, and commits show development activity—not whether a product is secure, accessible, reliable, or useful. AI can speed up prototyping, but durable software still needs careful testing, maintenance, privacy decisions, and a plan for costs and integrations. The report does not say whether Sarah’s Books has encountered problems in those areas.

How it differs from Goodreads
Ritter positions Sarah’s Books as more personal than broad platforms such as Goodreads. The useful distinction is one of emphasis, not a claim that one is objectively better. Sarah’s Books foregrounds one curator’s taste and thematic framing; a large reading platform is generally built around a wider catalog and community features such as ratings, reviews, lists, or social connections. The available account does not provide a feature-by-feature comparison or evidence that the app outperforms Goodreads or general-purpose AI assistants.

The app’s reported links connect recommendations to different ways of reading:
- Borrow: Libby links offer a route to library access. A link does not guarantee that a title is available through a reader’s library, in a preferred format, or without a wait. Access depends on library membership, licensing, local catalog availability, and possible holds. Learn more at the Libby help site.
- Buy: Bookshop.org provides a purchasing path associated with support for independent bookstores. Inventory, shipping, discounts, and availability can vary. The report does not disclose whether Sarah’s Books receives a commission or any other compensation from purchases. See Bookshop.org.
- Listen: Libro.fm is presented as an audiobook option. Catalog, price, credits, and geographic availability should be checked directly at Libro.fm.
GeekWire reports that creating a Sarah’s Books profile is free, but that does not establish that every feature will remain free. It also does not report the app’s revenue, costs, commission arrangements, user numbers, or profitability.

Book Mashups are an experiment, not a proven feature
GeekWire describes a feature called “Book Mashups,” in which ideas from different authors “collide, complement, and start talking to each other.” It sounds like a discovery experiment that could invite readers to make unexpected connections. The report does not explain whether mashups compare themes, style, characters, or other elements—or whether Ritter, AI, or both create them. Without those details, it is better treated as a developing idea than as an established literary-analysis tool.

Before Sarah’s Books, Ritter founded Tribute, a Seattle startup focused on workplace connections. GeekWire reports that Tribute shut down in 2025 after seven years. The same article says Ritter had earlier worked in product marketing at Microsoft and, at the time of publication, was working at Workato; employment details may change. It also notes that she built Summer Camp Finder as another project.

Ritter described the end of Tribute as a personal and professional setback. Sarah’s Books gave her a way to apply product-building experience in a smaller, more personally meaningful setting. The contrast is between an earlier ambition to build a large, funded company and a project rooted in an interest she already had. It is not proof that AI turned a failed startup into a commercial success: the reporting does not establish that Sarah’s Books is venture-backed, intended to scale, or generating revenue.

What readers and founders can reasonably take from it
For readers, Sarah’s Books offers a potentially distinctive route into book discovery, especially if a human curator’s taste feels more useful than generic categories. Its practical value depends on whether the recommendations fit, whether users can shape or reject them, and whether the linked titles are accessible. Those points have not been independently evaluated in the available reporting.
For founders, the example shows how AI can help someone with product knowledge turn a personal workflow into a working app. It does not show that code generation alone removes the hard parts of software: security, testing, maintainability, data handling, and long-term operating costs still matter. The reported hours, lines, and commits describe effort, not traction or product-market fit.
Sarah’s Books is therefore most accurately described as an AI-assisted, human-curated book project with reader-service links—not yet as a demonstrated business or a replacement for librarians, booksellers, Goodreads, or other recommendation tools.
