SAP announced on September 6, 2011, that it would acquire Right Hemisphere, a 3-D visualization company. The deal was about more than rendering product models: SAP wanted to connect 3-D views of products and assets with the enterprise data employees use to manufacture, maintain, service, and manage them. The technology became SAP Visual Enterprise and remains documented by SAP as the SAP 3D Visual Enterprise product family.
What SAP announced in 2011
SAP said it would acquire Right Hemisphere, which was based in San Ramon, California, and Auckland, New Zealand. The announcement described Right Hemisphere as a provider of visual enterprise solutions. Financial terms were not disclosed. SAP’s acquisition history records the transaction in September 2011, but the available announcement establishes the date of the announcement—not a more precise closing date. SAP’s announcement and acquisition history provide the company’s account; contemporary coverage also reported that the price was undisclosed (InfoWorld).
What Right Hemisphere’s technology did
Right Hemisphere’s proposition was to make engineering and product information useful beyond the people who create designs in specialist systems. Its software could prepare, publish, and display 3-D product or process information, then associate a visual model with relevant business data. It was not best understood as a replacement for high-end CAD authoring; the emphasis was on using and communicating model-based information across an organization.

SAP’s acquisition history describes the software as supporting 3-D models of product designs and manufacturing processes. The distinction matters: the value was not simply a more attractive interface, but a way to connect a physical object and its structure to information held in enterprise systems.

Why the deal fit SAP
SAP systems hold structured records such as materials, bills of material, inventory, maintenance records, and work orders. A 3-D model can show where a component sits in a product or asset; linking that view to enterprise records can help a user identify what the component is and what action or information is associated with it. SAP said the combination could support faster time to market, productivity, information quality, decision-making, and collaboration. Those were SAP’s stated expected benefits, not independently established results of the acquisition.
In practical terms, a technician might select a component in an assembly and find its spare-part information, or view a technical object alongside a repair instruction. A production team could use animated assembly guidance, while sales or training staff could include interactive product visuals in business material. SAP Help describes Visual Enterprise Viewer as a tool for non-engineering and management users, including the use of 2-D and 3-D product information in documents such as PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and PDF-based collateral (SAP Help: Visual Enterprise Viewer).
How the acquisition became an SAP product
On March 8, 2012, SAP announced the first products resulting from the acquisition under the SAP Visual Enterprise name. The initial applications were SAP Visual Enterprise Author, SAP Visual Enterprise Viewer, and SAP Visual Enterprise Generator. SAP said they combined SAP Business Suite data with visual product and plant content (SAP’s 2012 product announcement).

The product family separated several jobs that are easy to conflate when described simply as “3-D visualization”:
- Authoring and preparation: preparing engineering or product information for visual use.
- Generation and publishing: converting data and producing output for business workflows.
- Viewing: enabling users, including non-engineers, to inspect models and instructions.
- Integration: associating visual content with SAP product, service, or maintenance records.
SAP Help now documents the family as SAP 3D Visual Enterprise, with products including Author, Generator, Access, Link, Mobile, Planner, Viewer, and Structure Manager (SAP Help product finder). SAP’s documentation ecosystem includes 9.0 material and release notes; this establishes continuing documentation and support activity, but does not mean every component has the same lifecycle or availability (Viewer release notes).
Where it fits in SAP maintenance workflows
SAP documentation describes visualization of technical objects, spare parts, and instructions in Plant Maintenance and enterprise asset-management workflows. This is a product for enterprise workflows, not a consumer-style app with a public checkout. SAP’s support instructions direct customers to authenticated SAP for Me and SAP Support channels for downloads. The documented route is SAP for Me → Services & Support → Download Software → Support Packages & Patches → alphabetical index → V → SAP Visual Enterprise (SAP support instructions). The cited public materials do not provide a current numeric list price or a simple self-service purchasing route.

The product family may suit an organization already using SAP that needs to connect complex products or serviceable assets to parts, work orders, and instructions. A lightweight model viewer, CAD authoring or simulation system, or cloud-first collaboration tool solves a different problem. If existing CAD, PLM, or asset-management software already serves the workflow, the case for adding another platform depends on whether SAP-linked visualization fills a real gap.
- Check component-specific format support. SAP’s 9.0 documentation lists formats including FBX, STL, JT, SAP Visual Enterprise Binary, RHZ, PDF 3D, and HTML 3-D, but support depends on the component and import or export workflow. Do not assume a format supported by one product works identically across the family. Review the relevant Generator 9.0 SP30 format matrix and, where relevant, the Author 9.0 SP29 format matrix.
- Plan license changes. SAP says Generator 9.0 uses an updated license-key system; 8.0 license files do not automatically migrate (SAP Generator FAQ).
- Test Viewer upgrades. SAP’s Viewer 9.0 upgrade information says installation removes earlier Viewer versions; the installer upgrades from 7.1.x, while earlier releases may need to be uninstalled first. Test deployment and rollback steps in the organization’s own environment (SAP Viewer upgrade information).
- Evaluate mobile separately. SAP support material flags end of maintenance for SAP 3D Visual Enterprise Mobile Viewers; do not assume mobile components share the lifecycle of desktop or server products (SAP Visual Enterprise support).
- Confirm entitlements and support access. SAP’s download path uses authenticated support channels. Viewer rights may depend on licenses for other Visual Enterprise products, so verify current contract terms rather than treating Viewer as universally free.
Why the acquisition still matters
The lasting significance of the deal is that SAP pursued a visual layer for enterprise information about physical products and assets. It turned into a named product family, and SAP continues to document that family and its connections to maintenance workflows. That makes the transaction more than a 2011 interface story: it was an effort to let people understand business data in the context of the equipment and products they work with.
