Yes—Samsung offers a standalone trade-in option in the U.S. that does not require you to buy a new phone. The important qualification is that the standalone transaction is operated independently by Samsung’s trade-in partner, Likewize. Your offer depends on the Galaxy model, market, and condition, and you should confirm the payment method and final-value rules before shipping the device.
Samsung announced the year-round Galaxy Trade-In Program on January 14, 2025. Its U.S. trade-in page now identifies a Standalone Trade-In Program for used Samsung smartphones. This is different from Samsung’s regular checkout trade-in, which is generally designed to provide credit toward a new qualifying Samsung purchase.
Samsung standalone trade-in vs. a normal trade-in
The standalone program is essentially a Samsung-supported way to sell an eligible used Galaxy phone without upgrading. Start at Samsung’s U.S. trade-in page, then follow the link to the standalone portal operated by Likewize.

Do not confuse the standalone route with Samsung’s launch promotions. A large trade-in credit advertised for a new Galaxy phone is normally tied to purchasing that phone and meeting the promotion’s terms. It is not necessarily the amount Samsung or Likewize will offer for a standalone sale.

Is Samsung paying cash for your Galaxy?
Not necessarily—and “cash” should not be assumed. Samsung’s U.S. page describes the standalone program as providing value for used Samsung smartphones, but the available official information does not establish one universal payment method or payout schedule.
The live Likewize quote should show the current offer and payment details. Before accepting, check:
- The quoted amount and how long it remains valid
- The available payment method and timing
- Whether inspection can reduce the offer
- What happens if the phone is rejected or revalued
- Whether you can decline a revised offer and have the phone returned
The safest description is that Samsung offers a standalone Galaxy trade-in route, while Likewize handles the independent transaction. Do not assume Samsung itself directly buys every submitted phone or sends every seller cash.
How to sell a Galaxy phone through the standalone program
- Open Samsung’s U.S. trade-in page. Go to samsung.com/us/trade-in.
- Select the standalone route. Follow Samsung’s current link to the Likewize standalone portal.
- Identify your phone. Select the exact Galaxy model and provide the requested information, including carrier or lock status if asked.
- Answer condition questions accurately. Report screen damage, battery problems, missing parts, charging issues, and other defects. Choosing a better condition than the phone actually has can lead to a lower inspected value or rejection.
- Review the offer. Record the quoted amount, expiration date, payment method, inspection rules, and return procedure before accepting.
- Back up your data. Save photos, contacts, messages, authenticator data, eSIM information, and anything else you need.
- Remove accounts and security locks. Sign out of your Samsung and Google accounts, disable relevant device-finding and anti-theft features, and remove the screen lock.
- Factory-reset the phone. Do this only after confirming that your backup is complete.
- Remove removable items. Take out the physical SIM card and microSD card. Follow the portal’s instructions for any eSIM information.
- Document the shipment. Photograph the phone powered on from all sides, the IMEI or serial number, the packaging, and the shipping label. Keep the tracking receipt.
Samsung’s standard trade-in terms require personal information to be removed, anti-theft protections to be disabled, and the device to be factory-reset. Standalone transactions may have separate Likewize terms, so use those terms as the final authority for shipping, inspection, payment, and returns.

Which Galaxy phones qualify?
There is no permanent, universal model list. Samsung says eligibility and trade-in values can change over time, so the live quote tool controls.
The standalone page specifically describes used Samsung smartphones. Do not assume that it accepts iPhones, every Android phone, tablets, watches, or other electronics through this route. Samsung’s broader standard trade-in program may accept additional product categories depending on the purchase and current offer, but that does not automatically apply to the standalone program.
Recent Galaxy S phones and Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip models are logical candidates, while older models may or may not be listed. Imported or region-specific devices can also receive different treatment from U.S.-market models. Check the exact model in the portal rather than relying on a general eligibility list.
Ownership, financing, and carrier locks
You should own the phone before sending it. Samsung’s standard terms exclude leased devices unless the customer purchases and owns them first. If the phone is still financed, sending it away does not cancel your carrier installment agreement. Check your payoff and ownership status, and make sure the phone’s IMEI is not restricted or blacklisted.

A carrier lock may affect the quote or resale value. Disclose it accurately. Do not select an unlocked version merely because the hardware looks identical. Also check whether the phone is reported lost or stolen; blacklisted devices may not qualify.
Condition requirements and cracked screens
Samsung’s standard U.S. requirements say an eligible device generally must:
- Power on and hold a charge
- Have a functioning display
- Not shut down unexpectedly
- Not be reported lost, stolen, or blacklisted
- Be owned by the person submitting it
- Have anti-theft locks disabled
- Have personal data removed and be factory-reset
- Not have a swollen or otherwise prohibited damaged battery
A cracked phone is not automatically accepted. Samsung’s FAQ and terms indicate that cracked-screen eligibility depends on the specific offer identifying that device and damage type as eligible. The standalone portal’s condition questions and terms should take precedence.

What if Likewize lowers the offer?
The initial quote may be subject to inspection. If the device does not match the condition you reported, the final amount may differ or the phone may be rejected. That makes documentation important: photograph the screen, frame, back, cameras, ports, IMEI or serial number, and the phone while it is powered on immediately before packaging.
Do not rely on Samsung’s standard return rules as a substitute for checking the standalone partner’s terms. Samsung’s standard FAQ says that, in some rejected-trade-in situations, a customer may have seven days to request the device’s return. The Likewize standalone terms should be checked for the applicable deadline, return procedure, shipping responsibility, and dispute process.
Before shipping, confirm whether the quote is guaranteed, how long it lasts, whether inspection can change it, how long you have to reject a revised offer, and when payment is issued. Keep all tracking and delivery evidence until the transaction is complete.

There is no universal winner because Samsung’s offer varies by model and condition. Compare net proceeds, not just the headline number:

Samsung and Likewize may be attractive when:
- You want a straightforward sale without finding a private buyer.
- You prefer not to meet someone in person.
- Your Galaxy is recent, fully functional, and in good condition.
- The quote is close to competing offers and convenience matters.
Compare other options first when:
- Your phone is unlocked, high-storage, rare, or exceptionally well preserved.
- You are willing to handle listings, messages, shipping, and buyer risk.
- A carrier is offering a large promotion tied to a plan, new line, or installment agreement.
- You need guaranteed payment before sending the phone.
- The standalone quote is materially below private-sale or retailer buyback offers.
A private sale may produce more, but factor in marketplace fees, shipping, fraud or chargeback risk, returns, time, and privacy. Carrier offers can look larger but may arrive as monthly bill credits and may require a new line, installment plan, qualifying rate plan, or staying with the carrier long enough to receive every credit. Recycling is usually the practical choice for a severely damaged or low-value phone, but it generally should not be viewed as a high-payout alternative.
Do not confuse standalone trade-in with Samsung buy-back programs
Samsung also has separate guaranteed buy-back or upgrade-related programs. Those programs generally involve purchasing an eligible Samsung device first and enrolling under specific terms. Samsung’s 2025 announcement was global, but implementation differs by country. Payment methods, eligible models, partner companies, taxes, shipping rules, and return rights may not match the U.S. program. This explanation is for U.S. Galaxy owners; readers elsewhere should use their local Samsung trade-in page.
Bottom line
Samsung does let eligible U.S. Galaxy owners submit a phone without buying a replacement. But this is best understood as a Samsung-supported standalone buyback route fulfilled by Likewize—not as the same instant-credit promotion shown during a new-phone purchase.
Get the live quote, read the payment and inspection terms, and compare the result with a private sale, carrier promotion, or retailer offer. Samsung/Likewize is most compelling when convenience matters and the phone is recent and fully functional; it is less likely to maximize your proceeds.
