Samsung trade-ins can cut the cost of a new Galaxy—or another eligible Samsung product—but the headline credit is not guaranteed cash. Samsung usually applies an estimated value at checkout and inspects the device after you send it. The final value depends on the live offer, your device’s model and condition, and whether you meet the order’s shipping and eligibility rules. This guide covers Samsung’s U.S. program; terms and values differ by country.
How Samsung trade-ins work
When you buy a qualifying product through Samsung.com or the Shop Samsung App, the checkout flow may let you select an eligible device and apply an estimated trade-in credit to the purchase. You then transfer your data, send the old device using Samsung’s instructions, and wait for inspection. The credit is conditional until the device is received and assessed under the terms attached to your order.
Samsung’s U.S. terms say the device generally must be shipped within 15 days after you receive the new product, unless the specific promotion sets a different period. If the device is missing, late, materially different from the description, or ineligible, Samsung may decline the credit or charge back some or all of the amount already applied. Read the terms for your order, not just a general FAQ.
Samsung’s program can cover smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, PCs, TVs, earbuds, and other categories depending on the new product and current offer. A device listed for one purchase may not qualify for another; eligibility and value can change with the model, condition, carrier or unlocked configuration, promotion, and date.

Samsung also lists a standalone trade-in route operated by Likewize. This is a separate resale option, not necessarily the same offer as a promotional credit attached to buying a new Samsung product.
Know which number you are comparing
- Estimated trade-in value: The amount shown before Samsung inspects the device.
- Promotional credit: Additional value tied to a qualifying purchase or limited-time offer.
- Net purchase cost: What you actually pay after discounts and credits, with taxes and financing considered separately.
- Cash resale value: What you could receive by selling the device without buying a Samsung product.
A carrier promotion can advertise more than Samsung’s direct quote, yet pay in monthly bill credits tied to an installment plan, eligible plan, or new line. It is not automatically equivalent to an immediate discount or cash. Check the carrier’s specific terms for the offer date, plan, remaining device balance, and what happens if you leave early.
Check condition and eligibility before accepting a quote
Samsung’s current U.S. terms set requirements that go beyond whether a device looks presentable. For most categories, the device must meet applicable requirements such as these:

- It powers on, holds a charge, and does not shut off unexpectedly.
- The display functions and does not have prohibited cracks, black spots, pixelation, or other defects, unless a specific offer says otherwise.
- It has no disqualifying water damage or corrosion on charging, SIM, or battery contacts.
- It is not reported lost or stolen, blacklisted, or associated with fraud.
- You own it; leased devices are not eligible. A remaining loan or carrier balance is a separate obligation and is not erased by the trade-in.
- Anti-theft and activation locks are disabled, and personal information is removed.
- Its FCC ID shows U.S. certification, where required by the terms.
- The charging port can charge and transfer data, and original components and unaltered IMEI or serial numbers are present.
- A device that originally included an S Pen must be submitted with a fully functional S Pen.
Review the full Samsung eligibility requirements. A working screen may still fail if it has dead pixels, flicker, burn-in, black spots, or pixelation. Other easily missed issues include a damaged USB-C port, an aftermarket screen or battery, a swollen battery, a Google Factory Reset Protection lock left active after reset, or a missing S Pen.
Cracked, repaired, financed, or damaged devices
A cracked device qualifies only when the live checkout flow offers a cracked-device category for that particular model and purchase, and you select it when ordering. Do not assume that a cracked-screen offer covers a cracked back, frame, or camera lens, or that it waives the other eligibility requirements. Disclose all damage accurately. A device selected under a normal-condition offer may be repriced or rejected if inspection finds a crack.
Water damage, corrosion, a swollen battery, or other prohibited damage can make a device ineligible even if it turns on. Do not ship a visibly swollen battery. If it is warped, unusually hot while charging, or behaving abnormally, stop using it and follow appropriate battery-safety guidance.

Samsung’s terms warn that aftermarket, altered, or counterfeit components can disqualify a device. A cheap third-party repair may therefore reduce rather than improve your final value. Repair only if the likely increase in value clearly exceeds the repair cost and the risk that the repair will not meet the program’s component rules.

A financed phone and a leased phone are not the same. Samsung says leased devices are ineligible, while a financed device may still have a separate balance owed to a carrier or lender. Trading it in does not automatically pay off that balance, unlock the phone, or cancel a carrier agreement. Confirm ownership, account status, and any remaining obligations before proceeding.
How to estimate whether the offer is worthwhile
There is no dependable permanent Samsung price table: eligible models and values change by promotion and purchase. Use the live estimate for the exact device, then compare what you would actually pay or receive elsewhere. Run the quote for the new product configuration you intend to buy; unlocked and carrier versions can have different offers.

Use this simple comparison:
Effective trade-in benefit = trade-in credit + qualifying promotional value − any extra costs or obligations required to get it.
Then compare the resulting net cost of the new product with the alternatives below. Include taxes, financing, required plans, repair expenses, selling fees, shipping, and the value of your time where relevant. Do not count a carrier’s advertised “up to” credit as cash if it arrives as monthly bill credits and depends on staying eligible.

When Samsung is likely to be the better deal
Samsung’s direct route is most compelling when a launch or limited-time promotion makes the combined discount materially better than the net amount you could realize through sale or another trade-in. Compare the full purchase, not just the trade-in line: a promotional credit may be tied to a qualifying product, add-on, or purchase window. Samsung’s offers page changes; verify any advertised amount, eligible models, and end date there before relying on it.
Private sale deserves a closer look when the Samsung offer is ordinary, the device is popular and in excellent condition, and you are willing to handle the transaction. A carrier offer may win for someone who would keep the required plan anyway, but is a weaker fit if you expect to switch carriers, need an unlocked phone, or want value up front.

- Identify the exact device. Record the model, storage, carrier or unlocked status, and any details requested by the estimator. Check the IMEI or serial number. Do not choose a similar model from a list.
- Test its functions. Check power, charging, display and touch, cameras, speakers, microphones, buttons, wireless and cellular connections, ports, biometric features, and any included S Pen or accessories relevant to the category.
- Inspect for damage. Look in bright light at the screen, back, frame, camera lenses, and ports. Note cracks, dents, corrosion, display defects, or signs of a swollen battery. Choose a condition category that describes the device, not the one that produces the largest estimate.
- Back up and transfer your data. Save photos, messages, contacts, files, passwords, and authenticator access. Move your number or eSIM to the new device before resetting. Remove physical SIM and microSD cards.
- Remove accounts and anti-theft locks. Disable device-location and anti-theft protections as required, and remove the device from relevant accounts. A factory reset alone may leave a reactivation or activation lock in place. For an iPhone, disable Find My and Activation Lock and handle iMessage as needed when moving to Android; follow Apple’s current support instructions rather than relying on the reset alone.
- Document the device and quote. Photograph all sides, the powered-on screen, and the IMEI or serial number. Save screenshots of the selected condition and estimate, the order confirmation, and the applicable terms.
- Factory-reset and package it. Reset only after the backup and account-transfer steps are complete. Follow Samsung’s packing instructions and use the supplied label or method for your order.
- Ship promptly and keep proof. Send it within the deadline for your order. Keep the tracking receipt and number until inspection and credit are resolved, and confirm delivery.
For watches, earbuds, tablets, PCs, TVs, and appliances, check the live category-specific instructions instead of assuming the phone checklist applies unchanged. Test relevant charging, pairing, display, ports, sensors, keyboard or accessories, account locks, model number, and data-removal requirements. The live offer may specify different packaging, pickup, shipping, or included accessories.

Once Samsung or its program partner receives the device, it checks the submission against the model and condition you selected and the applicable requirements. The initial estimate may be confirmed, reduced, or canceled. Depending on the order’s terms, an ineligible, late, or missing device can lead to a charge for credit already applied or the loss of a promotion. Do not assume the device will be returned under every program or set of terms; check the rules attached to your order.
If the result differs from your expectation, save the inspection notice and order records, then contact Samsung support through the appropriate order-support channel. Provide the order number and tracking proof, and explain the discrepancy with your pre-shipment photos and saved estimate. Your photos are useful documentation, but do not by themselves guarantee that Samsung will accept the device or reverse a decision.
A final value worksheet
Before placing the order, write down:
- New product price and any ordinary discount.
- Samsung trade-in estimate and any separate promotional bonus.
- Applicable taxes, financing charges, and required accessories or add-ons.
- Net cost if the trade-in is accepted as quoted.
- Potential chargeback exposure if it is late or fails inspection.
- Best realistic private-sale or other trade-in value, less fees, shipping, repair cost, and effort.
- For carrier deals: required plan, installment period, timing of bill credits, remaining balance, and consequences of leaving early.
The strongest offer is the one that leaves you with the lowest reliable net cost for the device you actually want—not necessarily the highest advertised trade-in number.
