In June 2000, $298.52 was a good price for Samsung’s 19-inch SyncMaster 950P CRT. In 2026, that same price is usually a poor buy. The 950P offered strong specifications for its time, including a reported maximum mode of 1600×1200 at 76 Hz. Today, its age, bulk, analog-only connection and uncertain condition matter more than its original performance. Consider one only if you specifically want a CRT and can test the actual unit before buying.
What the $298.52 deal meant
The price came from a June 26, 2000, offer: a listed price of $373.15 minus a 20% first-order discount of $74.63, with ground shipping advertised as free. The original AnandTech discussion treated it as a worthwhile deal. Participants generally liked the monitor’s clarity and early ownership experience, but those comments are personal reports, not controlled measurements or proof of long-term reliability.
That distinction matters if you have found the old thread while shopping now. The historical price answers whether the 950P was attractive in 2000; it does not establish a fair price for a roughly 26-year-old monitor in 2026. There is no dependable market-wide price benchmark here. Judge any offer by the individual unit’s condition, your intended use, and the risks and cost of getting it home.
What kind of monitor is the 950P?
The SyncMaster 950P is a color cathode-ray tube (CRT), not a flat-panel LCD. Its 19-inch diagonal and comparatively squared-looking glass should not be confused with a modern flat display. In the original comparison, Samsung’s 955DF was the flatter-screen alternative. Samsung’s archived support page for the PG19LS9U model family provides a manual; check the full model suffix and the label on the specific unit, because regional variants and included connections can differ.

The resolution and dot-pitch figures appear in contemporary review coverage; the manual is the better reference for model-specific controls and regional details. Treat 1600×1200 at 76 Hz as a reported maximum mode, not a guarantee that every surviving example will look sharp or operate comfortably at that setting. Tube wear, focus, graphics output, cable quality and the individual monitor all affect the result. The original discussion also noted that the 950P offered more refresh-rate flexibility than the 955DF, while the 955DF had the flatter screen; the 900IFT was mentioned as a pricier alternative.
The 950P has on-screen adjustments for functions such as geometry, focus, color and degaussing. Those controls can help correct some issues, but they cannot restore a worn tube or reliably fix every focus, convergence or geometry fault.

Is it good for gaming?
Retro PC gaming: potentially
A 4:3 CRT can suit older PCs and games designed for CRT-era resolutions and analog video. CRT motion does not have the sample-and-hold behavior of an LCD or OLED panel, which is part of the appeal for some enthusiasts. The 950P is worth considering if you want that experience, have a compatible analog source, and the particular unit passes inspection.

Many current graphics cards output HDMI or DisplayPort, so connecting one to a VGA CRT generally requires an appropriate active digital-to-analog converter. A cable alone is not a universal solution. Check that the converter supports the resolution and refresh rate you intend to use, and account for the adapter and signal path when judging image quality. Even at its reported maximum mode, the 950P is not a substitute for a modern high-resolution, high-refresh gaming display.

Console gaming: check the whole signal chain
Do not assume a modern console can connect directly. Compatibility depends on the console’s output, any scaler or converter, the chosen resolution and refresh rate, and the monitor’s inputs. Research those pieces together before buying; the monitor’s VGA capability alone does not guarantee console compatibility.
Good for office work or everyday use?
In its era, a 19-inch CRT with flexible resolutions and adjustable image controls could make a capable general-purpose display. In 2026, it is a poor practical choice for most office, streaming and desktop use. It is very deep and heavy, lacks modern digital inputs, and may flicker at lower refresh rates. Modern LCD and OLED displays offer more practical connectivity, lower power use, easier ergonomics, warranty availability and much higher resolutions.

Age is the bigger concern than the specification sheet. A used CRT may have a dim or worn tube, soft focus, color problems, unstable geometry or failing electronics. Manufacturer warranty and replacement parts should not be assumed. A positive owner comment from the early 2000s cannot tell you the current condition of a unit being sold today.

Whenever possible, arrange local pickup and a live demonstration. At roughly 48 pounds before packaging, a CRT is awkward to move and vulnerable to shipping damage. If shipping is unavoidable, consider whether the seller can package it securely and insure it; a listing that says “works” is not the same as seeing the picture yourself.
Before powering it on
- Inspect the glass for cracks or serious scratches, and the housing for impact damage.
- Check the power and signal cables, rear input layout, model and full suffix, and whether the stand is included and stable.
- Look for signs of liquid damage, smoke residue or unauthorized repair.
During the test
- Power it on and observe startup and warm-up. A picture that takes unusually long to appear is a warning sign.
- Check brightness and contrast, then inspect white text and fine lines at the center and all four corners for focus.
- Use white, gray, red, green, blue and black test screens to look for color casts, uneven patches, burn-in or ghost images.
- Show straight lines, rectangles and circles to assess geometry. Look for colored fringes around white text or lines, which can indicate convergence problems.
- Test at the resolution and refresh rate you actually plan to use; check for flicker, horizontal or vertical instability, and whether the image stays stable after warm-up.
- Test VGA and BNC separately if the unit has both and you intend to use them. Try the on-screen controls, including recall and degauss.
- Let it run for at least 20–30 minutes and repeat the checks. Some faults are easier to notice after the monitor warms up.
Walk away if you hear a loud pop or repeated clicking, smell ozone, see the monitor shut down, or find unpredictable brightness changes, persistent color tint, uncorrectable softness or severe geometry errors. Do not open the enclosure: CRTs can retain dangerous high voltages even after being unplugged.
Who should buy one?

The 950P is not automatically better than a Sony Trinitron, Mitsubishi Diamondtron or other CRT. Comparisons depend on the particular models and, especially, tube condition, focus, brightness, convergence, geometry and personal preference. For any 950P listing, verify the exact suffix, inputs and operating condition rather than buying on the name or the old deal price alone.
