The headline is real, but the timing and ownership are easy to get wrong. Samsung did not directly buy Denon, Marantz, Bowers & Wilkins, and Polk as separate companies. Samsung-owned HARMAN acquired Masimo’s Sound United consumer-audio business for $350 million in cash, subject to adjustments. The transaction closed on September 23, 2025—so it is not a new August 2026 deal.
What HARMAN acquired was substantial: Bowers & Wilkins, Denon, Marantz, Polk Audio, Definitive Technology, HEOS, Classé, and Boston Acoustics. The purchase significantly broadened Samsung’s corporate exposure to premium home audio, hi-fi, home theater, headphones, and networked music, but it did not give Samsung control of the entire premium-audio industry.

What HARMAN acquired
Sound United’s consumer-audio business included:
- Bowers & Wilkins: premium loudspeakers and headphones.
- Denon: AV receivers, amplifiers, network audio, headphones, and home-theater products.
- Marantz: hi-fi electronics, integrated amplifiers, AV receivers, and network players.
- Polk Audio: consumer speakers, soundbars, and home-theater products.
- Definitive Technology: home-theater and high-performance loudspeakers.
- HEOS: networked multi-room audio technology and products.
- Classé: high-end amplification and electronics.
- Boston Acoustics: speakers and related consumer-audio products.
HARMAN said Sound United would operate as a standalone strategic business unit within HARMAN’s Lifestyle Division. That means the acquisition did not automatically turn every brand into a Samsung-branded product line.
What Samsung already owned through HARMAN
Before the Sound United purchase, HARMAN already had a wide portfolio, including:
- JBL
- Harman Kardon
- AKG
- Mark Levinson
- Revel
- Infinity
- Lexicon
- Arcam
- Professional-audio brands such as Crown, Soundcraft, Studer, BSS, and dbx
HARMAN also has major automotive and connected-car operations. Its original acquisition by Samsung was not simply a consumer-headphone deal: Samsung emphasized automotive electronics, connected technologies, and relationships with vehicle manufacturers.

By contrast, the Sound United transaction was much more directly focused on expanding HARMAN’s consumer and premium-audio position. HARMAN’s 2025 investor presentation identifies home audio, headphones and true wireless products, portable audio, premium expansion, and Roon-related music experiences as strategic areas.

Why the deal matters
It connects scale with specialist audio brands
HARMAN already covered portable speakers, mainstream consumer audio, luxury audio, professional equipment, and automotive systems. Sound United added more depth in traditional home audio: AV receivers, stereo components, premium loudspeakers, headphones, and networked listening.
The result is better understood as a broad “house of brands” than as one unified Samsung audio product line:

It gives Samsung a larger position in traditional home audio
Samsung is already a major television, display, mobile, and soundbar company. Through HARMAN, it now has deeper access to specialist retail and custom-install channels, two-channel hi-fi, AV receivers, separate amplifiers, premium speakers, headphones, and multi-room audio.

That could create scale advantages in engineering, distribution, manufacturing, software, and supply chains. It could also create more overlap between brands competing in speakers, headphones, soundbars, AVRs, and luxury audio. Neither the benefits nor the risks are guaranteed by ownership alone.
What this means for consumers
Do not expect every product to become a Samsung product
There is no blanket announcement that Denon, Marantz, or Bowers & Wilkins products will be rebranded as Samsung devices. HARMAN’s stated standalone-business structure points in the opposite direction: the acquired brands’ identities, heritage, and customer bases remain important.
There is also no cited promise that all the brands will suddenly share Galaxy accounts, SmartThings controls, codecs, apps, or loyalty programs. Any such integration would require a later, product-specific announcement.

Ownership changes do not provide a universal answer about warranties, firmware, apps, replacement parts, dealers, or service. Those policies can differ by brand, model, country, and purchase date. Existing owners should use the official support page for their product rather than assume that Samsung’s general support policies apply.

Judge products on performance and support—not the parent company
Samsung ownership does not automatically make an amplifier better, a speaker cheaper, or a headphone more durable. Before buying, compare the actual product’s specifications, independent measurements, software support, warranty, price, and service network.
A practical buying checklist
Speakers
- Match the speaker to room size and placement.
- Check passive-versus-powered requirements and amplifier compatibility.
- Decide whether you need stereo, home theater, or multi-room operation.
- Compare independent measurements and the sound signature.
- Check local service and replacement-part availability.
AV receivers and home theater
- Verify HDMI version, gaming features, channel count, and supported formats.
- Check the room-correction system and whether the receiver has useful pre-outs.
- Confirm network, app, and streaming reliability.
- Match the receiver to your TV, speakers, and upgrade plans.
- Review warranty and dealer support for the exact model.
Headphones
- Compare comfort, clamp force, battery life, and active noise cancellation.
- Check multipoint behavior, codec compatibility, and wired operation.
- Look for independent frequency-response and noise-cancellation testing.
- Consider battery replacement and long-term software support.
- Review app permissions and privacy practices.
Streaming and multi-room audio
- Confirm compatibility with your streaming services and local music library.
- Check whether products can be grouped and synchronized reliably.
- Consider open standards versus dependence on one vendor’s platform.
- Ask whether the system remains useful if an app or cloud service changes.
- Do not assume HEOS, Roon, Samsung, and other platforms are interchangeable.

Potential benefits and risks of consolidation
Possible benefits
- More purchasing power and engineering resources.
- Broader distribution and retail reach.
- Greater capacity for network-audio and software development.
- Shared research, testing, manufacturing, and supply-chain capabilities.
- A stronger company spanning portable, home, automotive, professional, and high-end audio.
Possible risks
- Overlapping brands could lead to fewer models or slower refresh cycles.
- Distinctive brand identities could become less clear.
- Apps and software platforms could be consolidated in unpopular ways.
- Dealer relationships and service policies could change.
- Niche audiophile products could receive less attention than higher-volume categories.
- Consumers could assume compatibility between brands that do not actually share features or platforms.
These are reasonable questions about a large acquisition, not confirmed outcomes. The cited announcements do not establish that prices, product quality, staffing, factories, or market share have changed.
Why Masimo sold Sound United
Masimo said the divestiture supported a refocusing on its core professional-healthcare business. HARMAN, meanwhile, described the purchase as an expansion of its audio footprint across home audio, hi-fi components, AV receivers, headphones, and related categories.
The transaction price—$350 million in cash, subject to adjustments—was the amount paid for the broader Sound United consumer-audio business, not for Bowers & Wilkins alone.

How big is Samsung’s audio empire?
It is large by brand breadth, but “huge chunk of the premium-audio world” should not be confused with a verified market-share claim. The available primary sources establish the brands and categories HARMAN controls; they do not, by themselves, prove that Samsung or HARMAN dominates every market segment.
The more defensible conclusion is that Samsung now sits behind one of the industry’s broadest audio portfolios. Through HARMAN, its reach spans mainstream and premium speakers, headphones, AV receivers, stereo components, luxury electronics, professional equipment, automotive audio, and music software.
That creates strategic possibilities for Samsung and HARMAN, but consumers should still buy based on the specific product, platform, price, warranty, and support available in their region—not simply because the corporate parent is Samsung.
