Samsung is no longer merely getting ready to make HBM4. On February 12, 2026, it said it had begun mass production and commercial shipments of the memory, an important step from development into sales. What remains unclear is how much it is shipping, how broadly customers have qualified it, and whether it can win a substantial share of the market.
What Samsung says it is shipping
Samsung’s February announcement describes HBM4 built with its 1c DRAM process—its sixth-generation 10nm-class DRAM—and a 4nm logic base die. The company says the product delivers a consistent transfer rate of 11.7 gigabits per second per pin, with speeds up to 13Gbps. Those are per-pin rates, not the total bandwidth of an entire memory stack. Samsung has not publicly named the HBM4 customers receiving these shipments or disclosed shipment volumes. The distinction matters: a commercial shipment establishes more than a prototype or a customer sample, but it does not by itself show that a product is being delivered at mature, high volume. Samsung says it is expanding capacity in response to AI demand; actual output will also depend on yields, packaging capacity and customer qualification.

In the HBM business, “ready” can describe very different milestones: design completion, engineering samples, customer samples, qualification for a specific accelerator and package, pilot production, mass production, commercial shipments, and finally sustained high-volume delivery. A chip can reach one stage without having cleared the next.

By its own public account, Samsung has reached mass production and commercial shipment for HBM4. That is a stronger claim than saying it has samples or a production-ready design. But the public information cited here does not establish Samsung’s yields, monthly output, number of qualified customers, or allocation in any customer’s systems. Those are the measures that would show whether commercial availability has turned into scale.
HBM4E samples are progress, not production proof
On May 29, Samsung announced that it had begun shipping 12-layer HBM4E samples to major global customers. The company gives the samples a stable pin speed of 14Gbps, with speeds up to 16Gbps, and bandwidth of up to 3.6 terabytes per second per stack. Samsung says the product uses 1c DRAM and a 4nm logic base die. These are company-stated specifications; the bandwidth figure applies to a particular stack configuration and should not be treated as a universal comparison with other products.

Sampling is an intermediate step. It lets customers assess a component in their intended systems; it does not demonstrate that HBM4E has passed every qualification process or entered high-volume commercial production. The announcement does, however, show Samsung advancing its next-generation program while drawing on experience it says it gained from HBM4 production. Samsung’s HBM4E sample announcement

Samsung presented HBM4 at NVIDIA GTC 2026 and linked its HBM4 to NVIDIA’s Vera Rubin platform. In its first-quarter 2026 investor presentation, Samsung said it had commenced “mass product sales” of HBM4 and SOCAMM2 for Vera Rubin. That supports a commercial relationship with the platform ecosystem, but Samsung did not disclose its share of the memory supply. Samsung, SK hynix and Micron have reached different public milestones

The dates do not support a simple declaration that one company “won” HBM4. SK hynix’s earlier announcement was about development completion and production preparation; Samsung later announced commercial shipments; Micron said it had reached high-volume production. These are different milestones, and each company’s claims should be understood as company announcements rather than independent comparative testing.

SK hynix also remains a significant competitor in NVIDIA’s supply ecosystem. In July 2026, NVIDIA and SK Group announced a longer-term partnership that includes next-generation memory and Vera Rubin systems powered by SK hynix HBM4. What investors and technology buyers should watch
For Samsung, the open question is not simply whether it can make an HBM4 stack. It is whether it can turn its reported shipments into sustained, qualified supply at competitive yields. Useful evidence would include shipment or capacity figures, customer qualification disclosures, repeat orders, and clarity about which accelerator configurations use its memory. Pricing, reliability and delivery consistency matter too, but the cited announcements do not provide enough information to assess them.

Samsung’s 4nm logic base die and integrated memory, foundry and packaging capabilities may help it coordinate the components of an HBM stack. That is a potential advantage, not proof of better performance, lower cost or higher yield. HBM qualification depends on the complete system: memory, accelerator, interposer and package, signal integrity, power and thermals.
Performance comparisons also require care. Stack height, capacity, interface width, pin speed, power and operating conditions all affect reported results. Samsung’s HBM4E figure of up to 3.6TB/s per stack and Micron’s stated figure above 2.8TB/s concern particular products and configurations; comparing headline numbers alone would not establish which supplier is better overall.
Samsung has forecast that its HBM sales will more than triple in 2026 compared with 2025. That is a company outlook, not a reported result, and it does not reveal how much of the increase would come from HBM4 or how Samsung’s market share may change. The practical test is whether production and customer adoption catch up with the company’s technical and shipment announcements.
