Short answer: A used Galaxy S21 can be a worthwhile $120–$150 secondary or short-term phone in 2026, but it is usually a weak choice as a primary phone for several more years. The hardware remains capable; the bigger risks are an aging battery, wear on used units, uncertain carrier compatibility, and limited remaining software support.
Swappa reported Galaxy S21 5G listings starting around $119 on July 28, 2026. That is an attractive entry price, not a typical guaranteed transaction price. Before buying, verify the exact model, IMEI, unlock status, battery condition, return policy, and regional update history.
How much does a Galaxy S21 cost in 2026?
Swappa’s July 28, 2026 market data showed Galaxy S21 5G used listings starting at approximately $119. Prices vary by storage, carrier, condition and seller, so the starting figure should not be treated as the normal price for every phone. These are market-guidance thresholds, not guaranteed sale prices. Add sales tax, shipping, a case, charger, possible battery work and the value of a return policy to the purchase price.

What you still get from the S21
The regular Galaxy S21 5G was a 2021 flagship, not an entry-level phone. Samsung’s U.S. datasheet lists 5G, an OLED display, IP68 water and dust resistance, wireless charging, Wireless PowerShare, Samsung DeX, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, 25W wired charging and 15W wireless charging. The base model came with 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of storage. Specifications are documented in Samsung’s Galaxy S21 series datasheet.
- Messaging, web browsing, streaming, navigation and ordinary photography should remain practical on a healthy unit.
- The compact size, high-quality display, IP68 rating and wireless charging are uncommon together at the lowest used-phone prices.
- DeX and reverse wireless charging can make it more useful than a similarly priced budget handset.
- Do not assume it will outperform every new budget phone; current performance depends on the specific comparison and software.
The decisive issue: software support
Samsung announced four generations of Android/One UI upgrades and five years of security updates for the S21 family in its expanded update policy (Samsung announcement). Samsung’s One UI 7 support page lists the S21, S21+, S21 Ultra and S21 FE, making Android 15/One UI 7 the relevant final major-generation expectation for the regular S21 models (One UI 7 device list).
That does not mean every S21 stopped receiving updates on one universal date. Samsung’s U.S. carrier page records a firmware release for model SM-G991U on March 19, 2026 (model-specific update record). Update timing and availability vary by model number, carrier and country. Check the exact phone before purchase, and treat a recent firmware release as evidence of that variant’s update—not a promise of years of future support.

For banking, work, medical or business apps, limited remaining security support is a material risk. A purchase in 2026 does not restart Samsung’s original support clock.
Battery and condition can erase the bargain
Samsung lists typical battery capacities of 4,000mAh for the S21, 4,800mAh for the S21+ and 5,000mAh for the S21 Ultra, with 25W wired and 15W wireless charging (Samsung datasheet). Every unit is now several years old, and many still have their original battery. Do not buy on the assumption that a particular phone will last all day.
Ask the seller for
- A battery-health reading or diagnostic screenshot.
- Confirmation that it does not shut down or overheat during charging, video recording or other heavy use.
- Whether the battery or screen was replaced, and which parts were used.
- Proof that both wired and wireless charging work.
- A written return period and warranty.
Battery replacement pricing varies by location and repair provider. A low-priced phone needing immediate repair may cost more than a newer device with a fresh battery.
Which S21 model is the right one?
“Galaxy S21” listings can describe four different phones. The S21 FE is not interchangeable with the flagship S21 models.

Carrier, unlock and regional checks
“Unlocked” in a listing does not guarantee universal compatibility. Samsung’s U.S. support page identifies the unlocked S21 5G model and its documentation (Samsung U.S. support), but you still need to verify the individual device.
- Match the model number in Settings → About phone to the listing.
- Check the IMEI against the phone, seller record and packaging when available.
- Confirm it is paid off, not blacklisted and carrier-unlocked.
- Verify 5G bands, physical SIM and eSIM support for your carrier.
- Be cautious with imported models: warranty, bands and software can differ from U.S. versions.
Hardware compromises to price in
- No microSD expansion, making the 128GB model less flexible for large media libraries.
- Possible OLED burn-in, scratches, green tint, touch defects or fingerprint-reader wear.
- Potentially worn USB-C port, cameras, speakers, microphones or biometric hardware.
- No guarantee of long-term security updates or new Samsung AI features found on newer generations.
- Most used listings do not include a new-device warranty.
Used-phone inspection checklist
- Open Settings → About phone and confirm model, storage and serial information.
- Compare the IMEI with the listing and packaging, then verify blacklist and activation status.
- Display a white, gray and black image to check burn-in, dead pixels and uneven tint; test touch across the entire panel.
- Test every rear and front camera, autofocus, flash, microphones, speakers, vibration and fingerprint reader.
- Test USB-C charging, wireless charging and charging behavior for heat or interruptions.
- Make a call and test Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, NFC and 5G with your SIM or eSIM.
- Confirm no previous Samsung or Google account remains on the device.
- Install pending updates and record the security-patch level.
- Play video or use navigation while charging to expose rapid drain, shutdowns or overheating.
- Keep the return window and warranty documentation until every test is complete.
Refurbished versus private-party
“Refurbished” covers very different standards. Manufacturer-certified, retailer-renewed, marketplace-renewed and seller-refurbished phones may use different parts and warranties. Samsung’s Certified Re-Newed program describes genuine replacement parts and a certified battery for qualifying products, but availability is product- and supply-dependent (Samsung Certified Re-Newed).

Buy
Choose a base S21 around $120–$150 when it is unlocked, fully functional, has a healthy or recently replaced battery, and comes with a meaningful return window. It is best suited to a backup, travel, media or short-term phone.

Maybe
At $150–$200, require excellent condition, credible refurbishment and a warranty. Pay more for an S21+ or Ultra only when the larger display, battery or camera system directly matters to you.
Skip
Above roughly $200, compare newer phones first. Avoid any unit with unknown IMEI status, no return policy, severe battery weakness, burn-in, carrier uncertainty or imported compatibility issues. For several years of secure primary-phone use, a newer Galaxy or a new budget phone is the safer financial choice.
