Salesforce’s Slack AI push is real, but it is not a brand-new launch: the rebuilt Slackbot became generally available in January 2026, and Salesforce has since been expanding the agent capabilities around it. The strategy is to make Slack a conversational front end for AI agents that can find information and, where configured, take action across Salesforce and connected business systems. That puts Salesforce in competition with Microsoft’s workplace AI ecosystem—but it does not make Slackbot, Agentforce and Microsoft 365 Copilot interchangeable products.

What Salesforce launched—and when

Salesforce announced the general availability of its rebuilt Slackbot on January 13, 2026, with a phased rollout continuing through January and February. The company describes Slackbot as a personal agent for work: it can answer questions, summarize information and help prepare work using workplace context. The announcement listed Slack Business+ and Enterprise+ customers as eligible. Check the current plan and regional availability with Slack before budgeting, since packaging and rollout details can change. (Salesforce’s announcement; rollout details.)

The larger shift is Salesforce’s effort to make Slack a work surface for its Agentforce platform. Its phrase “digital teammates” refers to software agents that may retrieve information, produce drafts, initiate workflows or carry out configured actions—not autonomous employees. The practical scope depends on what systems are connected, what permissions and actions are configured, and whether a person must approve the result.

Slackbot, Agentforce and Coworker are not the same product

  • Slackbot: The employee-facing personal work agent inside Slack. It can help answer and summarize using available workplace context.
  • Agentforce in Slack: Task-oriented agents employees can interact with in Slack. Salesforce positions these for work such as searching connected systems, preparing materials and executing business processes.
  • Third-party agents and apps: Slack can provide a conversational entry point to connected services, subject to supported integrations, permissions and configuration.
  • Agentforce Coworker: A separate Salesforce experience accessible from the CRM Global Search bar, with optional connections to Slack and Data 360 objects. Salesforce says rolling automatic enablement began August 4, 2026, for customers with certain unmetered user-based AI entitlements. That is not a general free entitlement for every Salesforce customer. (Salesforce Coworker FAQ.)

Salesforce’s Summer ’26 materials describe a Slackbot MCP client connecting to more than 6,000 apps and agents. Treat that as Salesforce’s ecosystem figure, not a guarantee that every customer can access every app or action: the specific connector, plan, permissions and setup determine what works in a given deployment. (Summer ’26 release highlights.)

What can a digital teammate actually do?

Consider a sales employee preparing for a customer meeting. An agent might search relevant Slack conversations and a connected Salesforce opportunity, summarize recent objections, and draft a briefing. Those are different levels of capability:

  1. Retrieve: Find messages, records or documents the user is allowed to access.
  2. Summarize or draft: Turn retrieved material into a deal-review outline, customer briefing or proposed follow-up.
  3. Initiate: Open a service escalation, prepare a CRM update or route a request into a workflow.
  4. Execute: Change a record, send a message or complete another action—only if the agent has been configured and authorized to do so.

Other plausible workflows include locating an approved document across connected repositories, identifying an account owner, or preparing a service handoff. The key question is not whether an agent can produce a convincing answer; it is what it can change or send, and what safeguards apply. Ask vendors to demonstrate the actual workflow in your environment, including approvals, logging and recovery when a connected system fails.

Slack says Agentforce in Slack honors user-level permissions. That claim should be verified for each connector and configuration, rather than assumed to cover every external source automatically. Administrators should test cases where a user can view a Slack conversation but lacks access to a linked Salesforce record or document. (Slack’s description of Agentforce in Slack.)

Why Salesforce sees Slack as a platform, not just a chat window

Slack conversations contain requests, decisions and institutional know-how that may not be captured in formal records. Salesforce’s pitch is to combine that conversational context with CRM data and connected applications, then let agents help employees act without leaving the conversation. The company has also positioned Slack as the conversational interface for Agentforce 360.

That can be useful when a company’s high-value work revolves around customer accounts, sales pipelines or service processes in Salesforce. But Slack history is not automatically reliable knowledge: it can include outdated advice, unresolved debate, duplicated answers and sensitive discussions. More searchable context is not necessarily better context. Organizations need rules for authoritative sources, retention and access, plus a way to distinguish a current CRM record or approved policy from an old message.

Slack and Agentforce vs. Microsoft Copilot

The meaningful comparison is not Slackbot versus one Microsoft chat box. It is two broader ecosystems with different centers of gravity:

Decision area Salesforce and Slack Microsoft
Primary work surface Slack conversations, with Slackbot and Agentforce agents available in that context Microsoft 365 apps and Teams, with Copilot embedded across work tools
Natural context advantage Slack discussions plus Salesforce customer and workflow data, when connected and licensed Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint and OneDrive, alongside Microsoft identity
Agent direction Specialized agents tied to CRM and business processes; Slack can connect to third-party apps Copilot experiences across Microsoft 365, with Copilot Studio for building and deploying custom agents
Likely fit Organizations where Slack is central and Salesforce owns important customer workflows Organizations standardized on Microsoft 365, Teams and Microsoft-centered identity and governance

Salesforce’s potential advantage is the combination of Slack conversation with CRM-native customer processes and a work surface intended to connect multiple applications. Microsoft’s advantage is its existing footprint in email, documents, meetings, collaboration, identity and governance. Which matters more depends on where a company’s useful context and executable workflows already live—not on which assistant gives the best demo.

What the licenses may cost—and why headline prices mislead

As listed on Microsoft’s U.S. pricing pages when reviewed for this article, Microsoft 365 Copilot was $30 per user per month, paid yearly. Microsoft 365 Copilot Business was listed from $18 per user per month, paid yearly, for qualifying customers and plans with up to 300 users. Microsoft listed a standalone Copilot Studio capacity pack at $200 per month for 25,000 Copilot Credits; its pricing page also describes other usage options and says an Azure subscription is required for agent usage. Confirm current regional prices, eligibility and terms before committing. (Microsoft 365 Copilot pricing; Copilot Studio pricing.)

These figures are not a direct price comparison with Slack or Agentforce. Salesforce costs and entitlements depend on the products and customer agreement; Slack’s plan packaging also matters. Agentforce Coworker’s “no additional cost” enablement applies only to specified customers with qualifying unmetered user-based AI entitlements. It does not mean Agentforce is free for all Salesforce customers. Likewise, capabilities included for licensed Microsoft 365 Copilot users do not erase possible usage, Azure, connector or deployment costs.

For a realistic budget, compare the licenses you already own with incremental costs for AI add-ons, agent usage or credits, connectors, data-platform requirements, implementation, training, governance and ongoing monitoring. A per-user assistant license and a capacity-based agent product pay for different things.

How to decide which platform to pilot

  • Start with Slack and Agentforce if Slack is already where teams collaborate, Salesforce holds the customer records that matter, and your first use cases involve account research, sales or service work. Confirm the required Salesforce and Slack entitlements before assuming a feature is included.
  • Start with Microsoft Copilot if employees’ daily context is concentrated in Teams, Outlook, Office documents, SharePoint and OneDrive, and your identity and governance operations are already Microsoft-centered.
  • Consider a mixed deployment if Salesforce owns customer workflows while Microsoft 365 owns documents, email, meetings and identity. Define which platform owns retrieval, workflow execution, approvals, monitoring and audit records. Avoid paying to deploy two generic assistants that do the same thing.

In a pilot, use real but appropriately controlled workflows and representative data. Measure whether answers cite useful sources, whether permission boundaries hold, and how often users must correct drafts. Test failure cases: stale or conflicting information, inaccessible linked records, a missing connector, an incorrect proposed update, and an attempted customer-facing action. Decide in advance which actions are draft-only, which require approval and which may run automatically. Require an audit trail and a clear rollback or correction path for changes.

Also ask how administrators can restrict access, review activity and disable a capability; how edits and deletions affect indexed information; what is logged and retained; and how the service handles malicious instructions embedded in messages or documents. Vendor assurances need to be checked against the particular connector, data source and deployment settings. A successful demo does not establish accuracy, safety or savings in your own environment.

The bottom line for technology buyers

Salesforce is trying to make Slack the conversational control plane for a network of business agents, not merely a slightly smarter chatbot. That is a credible challenge to Microsoft’s workplace AI ecosystem, especially for companies whose customer data and processes already run through Salesforce. Microsoft remains naturally advantaged where work is centered on Microsoft 365. The deciding factors are likely to be existing licenses, data access, workflow fit, governance and the cost of making agents dependable—not the “digital teammate” label.
