Rep.ai announced a $7.5 million funding round on September 18, 2024, to develop AI sales representatives that could engage website visitors through text, audio and video. Founded by Daniel Ternyak and previously known as ServiceBell, the company said it would use the money to advance its AI models and hire engineers. Reports named Browder Capital, Gradient Ventures and M[X]V among the investors; coverage described the financing as venture or seed funding, without establishing a formal Series A or Series B. VentureBeat’s launch report covered the announcement.
What Rep.ai meant by a “digital twin”
Rep.ai used “digital twin” as a product label for an AI avatar representing a salesperson or brand representative. The concept combined a visual likeness and voice with conversational AI and company-specific information, such as marketing materials, website content and CRM data. The intended setting was a company website, where the avatar could answer questions, qualify prospects and pass suitable leads to a human salesperson.
That label should not be taken literally. The product was not evidence of a complete digital copy of a person, their consciousness, judgment, memories or full sales ability. It described an AI interface configured to look or sound like a representative and respond using supplied information and instructions. Rep.ai’s AI Chat page describes the company’s current product positioning.

The company had previously operated as ServiceBell and shifted its positioning toward AI-powered inbound sales. The change was a rebrand or pivot, not proof that every earlier live-video function disappeared: Rep.ai’s later product materials continued to emphasize live engagement and the option for a human to take over.
#1 Best Overall
The funding announcement cast the product as a way to make sales engagement available beyond the hours when a human team is online. A website visitor might arrive at night, on a weekend or while representatives are busy. An AI agent could respond immediately, handle routine product questions, identify intent, qualify a lead and potentially book a meeting or route the conversation to staff.
How the sales-agent workflow is supposed to work
- A visitor arrives. A company adds Rep.ai’s website experience; its current homepage says AI Live Chat and AI Intent can be set up with a website script, followed by configuration and training.
- The agent starts a conversation. Depending on the product configuration, the interaction may use text, voice or a video avatar.
- It draws on company information. The system is configured around business and product content. Rep.ai’s current materials describe website content and other selected information as inputs; the company’s 2024 funding coverage also referred to marketing materials and CRM data.
- It qualifies and routes. The agent can ask questions, assess a visitor’s needs and direct a promising lead toward a meeting or the relevant sales representative.
- A human can step in. Rep.ai’s current materials promote human takeover and integrations with sales tools. The value of that step depends on the handoff working in practice: a live conversation should not end in a dead-end bot response or an unmonitored alert.
Rep.ai now presents a broader inbound-sales platform—including AI live chat, intent detection, video avatars, voice AI, qualification, routing and integrations—rather than only the launch-era avatar idea. Its demo page describes that positioning, while the integrations page lists connections to tools such as Salesforce, HubSpot, calendars, Slack and sales-engagement platforms. Buyers should confirm which integrations and functions are available for their specific plan and configuration.
How it differs from a conventional chatbot
The headline distinction in 2024 was real-time audio and video alongside text, rather than a text-only chat window. That may make an interaction feel more personal, but a human-like presentation does not automatically make an answer more accurate or a conversation more effective. The underlying sales workflow—qualification, meeting booking, CRM updates and routing—is also not unique to video avatars.

Rank #2
| Approach | Potential advantage | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Text chatbot | Familiar and relatively low-friction; useful for routine questions and routing. | Can feel impersonal, and still needs reliable answers and escalation. |
| Voice agent | Can make qualification or scheduling feel conversational. | Speech errors and misunderstood context can be harder to spot or review. |
| Video avatar | May attract attention and provide a face and voice for a brand interaction. | Can feel uncanny or intrusive, and raises likeness, disclosure, privacy and bandwidth concerns. |
| Human live chat or video | Offers flexible judgment and a clearly human relationship. | Requires staffing and may be unavailable when visitors arrive. |
| AI sales agent with human handoff | Can respond at any hour and handle repetitive first steps at scale. | Depends on accurate knowledge, guardrails, working integrations and humans available for escalation. |
Rep.ai’s strongest commercial case is therefore not necessarily that an avatar replaces a salesperson. It is that an always-on first response can capture and qualify inbound demand, then send a useful conversation to a human. Whether the video layer improves that result over a simpler text or voice experience is a question for measured trials, not a conclusion established by the funding announcement.
Why the idea may appeal to sales teams
Inbound leads can lose value when companies respond slowly or not at all. A continuously available system could answer basic questions, gather a prospect’s needs, book a meeting and alert the right team member. If a business sells a relatively standardized product and receives enough qualified website traffic, even a modest improvement in the number of leads reached promptly could matter.
But the announcement did not establish customer counts, revenue, conversion lift, response-time reductions, accuracy rates or return on investment. Nor does funding itself prove product-market fit. Rep.ai said the capital would go toward AI-model development and engineering hires; available launch coverage did not establish the company’s valuation, the size of each investor’s contribution or detailed traction figures. The “first” or “only” status sometimes used in launch positioning should likewise be treated as a company claim, not an independently verified market fact.

Risks a buyer should weigh
Wrong, stale or overconfident answers
A sales agent can misstate pricing, product capabilities, implementation timelines, security practices or contract terms. Website scanning and updates may reduce manual maintenance, but they do not guarantee accurate answers. Restrict the agent to approved sources; set clear boundaries; route pricing exceptions, legal, security and contract questions to people; and review transcripts regularly. Keep an obvious way for visitors to reach a human.
Consent, likeness and disclosure
Using an employee’s face or voice requires clear permission and rules for how the likeness may be used. A company should settle those terms in writing, including what happens if the employee leaves and whether the avatar may make commitments in that person’s name. Visitors should also understand when they are interacting with AI rather than the human whose appearance or voice is represented. Rep.ai’s founder raised consent as a condition for using a representative’s likeness in the VentureBeat interview.
Privacy and security
Before connecting CRM records or collecting visitor details, buyers should understand what data the agent can access, whether conversations are used to train models, how long transcripts are retained, who can retrieve them and how deletion works. Rep.ai’s enterprise page says its offering supports SOC 2 Type 1 and Type 2, GDPR, CCPA and HIPAA compliance. Those are company claims; a buyer should request relevant reports and documentation, including a SOC 2 report and bridge letter, data-processing terms, a subprocessor list, retention and deletion policies, encryption details, and HIPAA business-associate documentation where applicable.

Uncanny valley and visitor choice
Some visitors may welcome an avatar; others may find synthetic video distracting or distrustful. Test an avatar against text-only chat, compare disclosure wording, and consider making voice or video opt-in rather than automatic. Check performance on mobile devices and across the audiences and industries the business actually serves. “More human-like” is a design choice to test, not a guaranteed conversion advantage.
Workflow failures and monitoring costs
A promising conversation is wasted if a calendar cannot be booked, a CRM record fails to sync, a routing rule sends the lead to the wrong team or an alert goes unnoticed. A product also creates operating work: staff must monitor conversations, correct knowledge and take escalations. Include these costs, as well as subscription and any usage charges, when evaluating the economics.
A practical buyer’s checklist
- Business fit: How much relevant website traffic do you have, what does a qualified lead mean, and what is the cost of missing or delaying one? Is your offer standardized enough for approved content to answer common questions?
- Answer quality: Can you limit responses to trusted material? How does the agent handle uncertainty, conflicting information and requests for a person? Can it link visitors to supporting documentation?
- Disclosure and consent: Is the AI clearly identified? Do you have permission to use an employee’s likeness and voice, including after employment ends? Can visitors choose a non-video channel?
- Handoff: Can conversations route by territory, account, language or lead score? What happens when the assigned representative is unavailable? Can a person take over without forcing the visitor to start again?
- Sales-stack fit: Verify CRM field synchronization, calendar permissions, alerts, transcript access and plan-specific integration support. Do not assume a vendor’s integration list guarantees every workflow you need.
- Data governance: Ask about model training, data retention, deletion, permissions, audit logs, subprocessors and regional requirements. Review security and compliance documents directly.
- Economics and evidence: Confirm current subscription and usage pricing, implementation effort and monitoring needs. Run a controlled comparison against your existing chat or human workflow, and measure qualified meetings and conversion—not just conversations started.
Funding and commercial outlook
The $7.5 million round gave Rep.ai capital it said would support model development and engineering hiring. It did not, on its own, establish how many customers the company had won or whether avatar-based engagement generated a positive return. Rep.ai’s current pricing page directs prospective buyers to contact the company for pricing. A company blog post from August 20, 2024 listed monthly starting prices of $2,000 for an Inbound plan and $2,500 for an Allbound plan, but those are historical figures, not confirmed current prices. See the current pricing page and older pricing article for the distinction.
For a sales organization, the product is most plausible when inbound leads are valuable, response delays are costly, product information is reasonably consistent and a human team can handle qualified escalations. Low-traffic businesses, teams without escalation capacity, and buyers whose customers reject synthetic video may do better with a simpler chatbot or human-led live chat. The central test is whether the whole workflow produces better qualified outcomes at an acceptable cost—not whether the avatar looks convincing.
