“Remanufactured by Asurion” usually means a previously owned or returned phone was processed for reuse—not that it is factory-new. Asurion may supply a new, refurbished, or remanufactured phone for a claim, and a replacement may not match your original in every detail. The exact device, warranty, return deadline, and remedy for a problem depend on your carrier or protection plan. Before deciding whether to keep it, check its condition, activation and carrier compatibility, and the terms in your claim paperwork.
What “remanufactured by Asurion” means
In this context, remanufactured indicates a phone was previously used, returned, or recovered and then processed for further use. Asurion describes refurbished devices as potentially going through inspection, repair, cleaning, testing, and data removal, but that description does not establish one identical procedure for every device or protection program. See Asurion’s overview of refurbished technology.
The label alone does not tell you who previously owned the phone, whether its screen or battery was replaced, whether all components are original manufacturer parts, what its prior repair history was, or whether an original manufacturer warranty remains. It also does not specify a cosmetic grade or guarantee a new battery.

- New: sold as new and not previously used, subject to the seller’s description.
- Refurbished or remanufactured: previously owned or returned, then processed for reuse. The terms do not by themselves establish a universal condition or parts standard.
- Used or pre-owned: previously owned; the extent of inspection or repair depends on the seller or program.
- Claim replacement: a device supplied to resolve an approved protection-plan claim. It is not necessarily the same product as a phone sold through Asurion’s retail refurbished program.
Asurion’s terms for a particular service can permit non-original parts, but terms for one program should not be applied to every Asurion replacement. For example, see the Home+ coverage terms. If part origin or battery replacement matters to you, ask about the specific replacement and consult the applicable plan documents.

Is it a used phone—and is it safe to use?
It may be a previously used phone, but “previously used” does not by itself mean defective. A replacement can be a practical way to restore service, particularly if it passes inspection and works with your carrier. At the same time, the label is not proof that the phone is equivalent to a new retail device. Check the actual device rather than assuming it is either in perfect condition or necessarily unreliable.
Phones repaired with non-original components can, depending on the device and repair, show component or battery warnings, behave differently, or have altered water resistance. Those are possibilities—not evidence that your phone has aftermarket parts or a fault. Do not rely on a refurbished phone’s former water-resistance rating after repair unless the applicable seller or program confirms it.
Will the replacement match your original phone?
Asurion says its goal is to provide the same make and model, but availability can lead to a like-kind-and-quality substitute. That is a replacement standard, not a promise of an identical device. Asurion’s FAQ says a replacement may differ in brand, model, color, features, or accessory compatibility.

For example, a replacement may use eSIM rather than a physical SIM, or support a different set of cellular bands. These are examples of compatibility details to verify, not claims that such substitutions are routine.

Compare the replacement with your claim description and check that it supports your carrier, SIM or eSIM arrangement, and required features. If it materially differs from what the plan promised, contact Asurion or the carrier through the claim channel before the return period or warranty window expires.
Check carrier lock and account locks
Do not assume an insurance-claim replacement is unlocked. Asurion advertises phones sold through participating uBreakiFix by Asurion stores as unlocked and compatible with any carrier; that statement applies to that retail offering, not automatically to claim replacements. Store participation and inventory can vary. See Asurion’s retail refurbished-phone page.
- iPhone carrier status: open Settings → General → About and check Carrier Lock. “No SIM restrictions” indicates the phone is unlocked.
- Android carrier status: menus vary by manufacturer and software version. Check the SIM or network settings, or ask your carrier to confirm the device’s lock and activation status.
- Account locks: make sure an iPhone is not tied to someone else’s Apple Account through Activation Lock, and an Android phone is not blocked by someone else’s Google account or factory-reset protection.
- Network compatibility: confirm your carrier can activate the IMEI and that the device supports the network bands and SIM or eSIM setup you need.
Which warranty applies?
There is no single warranty period to assume for every phone described as remanufactured by Asurion. Keep the claim-replacement warranty separate from the warranty for a phone you buy from a retailer.

Inspect the replacement before you return the old phone
Keep the shipping box, labels, and paperwork while you check the replacement. Photograph any visible damage as soon as you open the package. Use this checklist:
Identity and compatibility
- Confirm the model and storage match the claim description or an allowed substitute.
- Compare the IMEI or serial number with the claim paperwork where applicable.
- Ask your carrier to confirm the IMEI is eligible for activation and the phone works with your plan.
- Verify the SIM tray or eSIM setup, carrier lock, and any account-lock status.
Physical condition
- Inspect the screen for cracks, dead pixels, burn-in, uneven brightness, and touch problems.
- Look over the frame, back glass, camera lenses, buttons, charging port, and SIM tray for damage or looseness.
- Check that the device has no swelling, unusual gaps, or other signs of battery damage. Stop using it and seek service if it appears swollen or dangerously hot.
- Check accessories only against what the claim or packaging says is included.
Function and battery
- Test wired charging and wireless charging if the model supports it.
- Make a call and test texting, cellular data, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and 4G or 5G service.
- Test the speakers, earpiece, microphones, vibration, cameras, flash, and biometrics such as Face ID, Touch ID, or a fingerprint reader.
- Check GPS, NFC, hotspot, and proximity sensor if you rely on them.
- Look for unusual battery drain, overheating, or unexpected shutdowns. A battery-health reading can be useful where the phone provides one, but do not assume a particular reading or a new battery was promised unless the plan says so.
If the replacement is defective, locked, or materially different
- Document the problem: take photos or video of physical damage, error messages, lock screens, or failed functions.
- Keep the evidence: retain the packaging, shipping labels, claim number, and copies of messages or support records.
- Contact the claim provider promptly: use the support channel named in your claim paperwork and explain that the issue concerns the replacement device.
- Ask for the remedy under the applicable plan or warranty: do not assume a second replacement, waived fee, or identical model is guaranteed.
- Avoid unauthorized repair: it may complicate warranty service. Get instructions from the claim provider before arranging a repair elsewhere.
If a phone cannot activate, is unexpectedly carrier-locked, remains tied to another person’s account, or has a blocked IMEI, raise that issue promptly rather than treating it as normal refurbishment wear.
Return the old phone on time
Some claim programs require the old phone to be returned using a prepaid label. Asurion’s materials describe return periods commonly around 10–15 days, but the exact deadline depends on the program. Use the deadline and instructions in your claim email or paperwork—not a general rule. Failure to return a required device can trigger a non-return charge that may be substantial; the amount varies by device and plan. See Asurion’s FAQ and replacement guidance.
If the old phone still works, back up your data, sign out of accounts, remove the SIM card, and factory-reset it. On an iPhone, turn off Find My and remove Activation Lock before return. On Android, remove the Google account and disable factory-reset protection where possible. Asurion recommends backing up, resetting, and removing the SIM. If the phone cannot power on or is too damaged to wipe, do not disassemble it; contact Asurion for instructions. Keep proof of shipment and tracking until the return is confirmed.

What to expect from the claim process
In general, you identify the carrier or protection program, provide the make and model, describe the problem, pay any required deductible or service fee, and follow the repair or replacement option offered. You may then track the service or shipment and return the damaged device if required. Exact steps and timing vary by program.
Some programs advertise next-business-day delivery for claims completed before specified weekday cutoffs. That is an example from Asurion’s Mobile Protect claim information, not a delivery promise for every plan or location. Check the timing shown for your own claim on Asurion’s claim-process page and in your claim confirmation.

A claim replacement may be the fastest route back to a working phone, but compare the deductible or service fee with the cost of buying a suitable device yourself. If you shop independently, compare the exact model, storage, carrier compatibility, battery and parts disclosures, warranty, and return policy—not just the seller’s label.

These programs are not interchangeable. Manufacturer-backed refurbished options may suit buyers who prioritize the manufacturer’s parts and support; a marketplace may offer more choice, but listing and seller terms need closer review. Prices, models, warranties, and inventory change, so check current terms before buying.

When to keep it—and when to seek another option
Keeping the replacement may make sense if the model and storage are acceptable, it activates normally, it passes the physical and functional checks, and you understand the applicable warranty and return requirements.
Ask for service or a remedy if it arrives damaged, will not activate, is unexpectedly locked, has an account lock, has a blocked IMEI, fails a core function, or materially differs from what the claim terms describe.
Compare buying independently if the deductible is close to the cost of a comparable phone, you need a specific model or configuration, or you prioritize known parts or battery standards and manufacturer-backed coverage. Compare the full cost and terms; the lowest listed price may not include the warranty or compatibility you need.
