Nintendo of America announced on February 21, 2019, that president and chief operating officer Reggie Fils-Aimé would retire, with April 15 as his last day. Doug Bowser, then the company’s senior vice president of sales and marketing, was named his successor. This was a change at Nintendo of America, not a change in the leadership of Nintendo Co., Ltd. in Japan.
What Nintendo announced
Nintendo of America said Fils-Aimé would leave the company on April 15, 2019, after more than 15 years at Nintendo of America and nearly 13 years as its president and COO. Bowser was named to succeed him. Nintendo’s announcement described the change as an orderly transition and said Bowser and the team would work to ensure it was seamless. Nintendo Wire’s report of the announcement records the dates, titles and statements.
In the announcement, Fils-Aimé expressed gratitude to colleagues and the Nintendo community. Nintendo presented his departure as a retirement, not a dismissal or a move to another Nintendo role.

Why his departure drew attention
Fils-Aimé was an unusually recognizable executive in the video-game business. He regularly appeared in Nintendo presentations and public events, helping make the company’s North American leadership familiar to its customers. His tenure spanned the Wii’s broad consumer appeal, the more difficult Wii U period and the early years of the Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo credited his leadership with helping expand the audience for products including Nintendogs, Brain Age, Wii Sports and Wii Fit. That is the company’s assessment of his contribution; it does not establish that one executive alone caused the performance of those products or platforms.
Who Doug Bowser was
Bowser was already a senior Nintendo of America executive, not an outside hire brought in to replace Fils-Aimé. He joined the company in 2015 as vice president of sales and later became senior vice president of sales and marketing. Nintendo World Report’s contemporary account describes his earlier roles.

That background made the appointment an internal succession with experience in Nintendo’s North American sales and marketing operation. The news surprised many fans because Fils-Aimé had become closely identified with the company’s public image, but Bowser’s appointment itself was not a leap from outside the organization. His surname, shared with Nintendo’s fictional villain King Bowser, also made the story an instant source of jokes; the coincidence was memorable, but the substantive news was the leadership handoff.
The business context and what could be inferred
The announcement came after the Nintendo Switch’s strong launch period, while Fils-Aimé was still leading the North American business. Nintendo framed the company as having strong momentum. The timing placed his departure at the end of a tenure spanning several very different hardware cycles, but it did not by itself signal a change in Nintendo’s global strategy or establish why Bowser was selected beyond his existing role and the planned succession.

Nintendo’s 2019 management notice subsequently listed Bowser as president of Nintendo of America, confirming that the announced handoff took place. Nintendo’s management changes document is the corporate confirmation. This distinguishes the February announcement naming a successor from later confirmation of Bowser’s position.

Fils-Aimé’s last day was April 15, 2019, and Bowser took over as Nintendo of America president. Bowser later announced his own retirement, effective December 31, 2025, according to Nintendo’s 2025 personnel announcement. The 2019 news is therefore a historical account of one succession, not a current report on who leads Nintendo of America.
