For most Apple Pay purchases, ask the merchant for the refund—not Apple. Apple Pay is usually the wallet and payment layer, while the merchant controls ordinary returns. If the purchase was billed by Apple, use Apple’s refund portal. Apple Cash and Apple Card transactions follow separate procedures.
Which Apple Pay refund route do you need?

“Apple Pay refund” can therefore mean several different things. Identify the payment type before contacting support.

First, identify the transaction
On an iPhone, open Wallet, tap the relevant card, and tap the transaction to see available details. Wallet history can be incomplete or unavailable in some regions, so use the bank or card issuer’s app or statement as the authoritative transaction record. See Apple’s transaction-history guidance.
Gather these details before requesting help:
- Merchant name, purchase date, and amount
- Receipt, order number, or confirmation email
- The card used in Wallet
- The last four digits of the Apple Pay card number, if requested
- Whether the transaction is pending, completed, duplicated, or unauthorized
How to refund a normal Apple Pay purchase
This is the correct process for most purchases from a store, restaurant, website, or third-party app.

- Check the merchant’s return or cancellation policy.
- Contact the merchant through its store, order page, app, email receipt, or customer-service channel.
- Explain that you paid using Apple Pay and request a refund under the merchant’s policy.
- Provide the receipt, order number, and any other information needed to locate the purchase.
- If requested, provide the last four digits of the Apple Pay card number—not automatically the last four digits of the physical card.
- If the merchant requires the original payment device, bring the iPhone or Apple Watch used for the purchase.
- Keep the refund confirmation and monitor the underlying debit or credit-card statement.
Apple says merchant policies vary. An approved refund normally goes back to the underlying payment card, not to a separate Apple Pay balance. Apple generally cannot authorize a retailer’s return or force a merchant to issue one. See Apple’s guidance for refunds on purchases made with credit or debit cards using Apple Pay.
If the merchant asks you to present the device
Use the same Wallet card used for the purchase:
- Open Wallet and select the card.
- Double-click the iPhone’s side button.
- Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.
- Hold the device near the contactless reader as instructed.
Apple Watch users may need to select the card in Wallet and present the watch. Exact screens can vary by device, operating system, region, and card issuer.
Find the Apple Pay card number
The number associated with a card in Apple Pay is usually different from the physical card number. A merchant may need its last four digits to match the refund to the original payment credential.
On iPhone
- Open Wallet.
- Tap the card used for the purchase.
- Tap More.
- Tap Card Number.
On Apple Watch
- Open Wallet.
- Tap the card.
- Scroll down and tap Card Details.
Give a legitimate merchant only the information needed to locate the refund. Do not send a full card number, Apple Account password, device passcode, or two-factor authentication code by email or to an unverified caller.
Request a refund for an Apple-billed purchase
Use this route for eligible App Store apps, in-app purchases, subscriptions, Apple Books, iTunes Store purchases, and other services billed by Apple. A merchant-billed app or website purchase may not appear in Apple’s portal; contact that merchant instead.
- Go to reportaproblem.apple.com.
- Sign in with the Apple Account used for the purchase.
- Select “I’d like to”.
- Choose “Request a refund.”
- Select a reason.
- Choose the purchase and submit the request.
Apple says eligibility depends on the country or region. A pending charge may not yet be available for a refund request. If you use more than one Apple Account, check each account. An unpaid order may also need to be paid before you can submit a request. See Apple’s refund-request instructions.

Subscription cancellation is different from a refund. Canceling a subscription normally prevents a future renewal; it does not automatically refund the current billing period. Submit a separate refund request if you want Apple to review the latest charge.

Check the status and timing of an Apple refund
For an Apple-billed purchase, Apple says to allow 24–48 hours for an update after submitting a request. Check the status at reportaproblem.apple.com by choosing Check Status of Claims.
If approved, the time for funds to appear depends on the payment method. Apple says refunds to credit cards, debit cards, Apple Pay, Apple Cash, and other payment methods may take up to 30 days to appear on the statement. That is not a universal deadline for every merchant refund.
Cancel or recover an Apple Cash payment
Apple Cash is not the same as paying a merchant with a debit or credit card through Apple Pay.
Cancel a pending person-to-person payment
If the payment is still marked Pending, the sender can generally cancel it:

- Tap the Apple Cash card.
- Tap the transaction.
- Tap the transaction again on the next screen.
- Tap Cancel Payment.
Apple says a payment marked Sent or Completed cannot be canceled through this Wallet flow. For a completed or mistaken payment, ask the recipient to send the money back. If the transaction is unauthorized, contact an Apple Cash Specialist and secure the Apple Account and device. See Apple’s Apple Cash transaction guidance.

Apple Cash used at a merchant
A merchant transaction can show a temporary hold or a different pending amount before it is finalized. This can happen with gas stations, restaurants, hotels, and similar merchants.
For a pending incorrect Apple Cash merchant charge, Apple says to wait four business days for it to clear. Once the charge is cleared, contact the merchant to correct an incorrect amount. For an unrecognized transaction, secure the account and contact an Apple Cash Specialist.

Apple Card is a card account, not simply an Apple Pay wallet entry. For an Apple Card transaction:
- Open Wallet.
- Tap Apple Card.
- Tap the transaction.
- Tap it again.
- Tap Report an Issue.
- Choose I need help with this transaction.
- Tap Continue to Chat and provide the requested information.
For an ordinary return, contacting the merchant may be faster. Apple’s flow may direct Apple Services transactions to Report a Problem. See Apple’s current Apple Card dispute instructions. Apple’s U.S. support material identifies Goldman Sachs Bank USA as the Apple Card issuer, but issuer and servicing arrangements can change, so use the current support page for up-to-date information.

- Confirm that the merchant actually approved and processed the refund.
- Ask for a refund reference, confirmation email, or processing date.
- Check the underlying debit or credit-card statement—not just Wallet.
- Allow time for the merchant, payment processor, card network, and issuer to post the credit.
- If the expected period has passed, contact the card issuer and provide the merchant’s confirmation.
Removing a card from Wallet does not necessarily cancel a refund. If the physical card was replaced or expired, contact the issuer if the credit does not appear. If the account was closed, the issuer may need to redirect or manually issue the funds. Handling varies by issuer.

Unauthorized, duplicate, or incorrect charges
You recognize the merchant but disagree with the charge
Ask the merchant for a refund or correction first. If the merchant refuses or does not resolve a genuine billing problem, contact the issuer of the underlying card. Keep receipts, emails, screenshots, and the merchant’s response.
You do not recognize the transaction
First check subscriptions, Family Sharing, receipts, merchant descriptors, and other users of the device or card. If the charge remains unexplained:
- For a debit or credit card in Wallet, contact the card issuer.
- For Apple Cash, contact an Apple Cash Specialist.
- For Apple Card, use the Apple Card transaction-issue flow.
- Secure the Apple Account, review trusted devices, and change the password if compromise is possible.
Apple Pay does not control the underlying card’s purchases, returns, refunds, or chargebacks. The applicable merchant or issuer handles those matters. See Apple’s Apple Pay and Wallet terms.
Duplicate or incorrect amount
Check whether one entry is a temporary authorization and another is the final transaction. Gas stations, hotels, car rentals, and restaurants can display an initial authorization that differs from the settled amount. Do not assume every pending authorization can be disputed immediately. Once the transaction settles, contact the merchant if the amount is still wrong, then contact the issuer if the merchant cannot correct it.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling Apple first for a retailer purchase: Apple generally cannot authorize the merchant’s return.
- Using the physical card’s last four digits: The merchant may need the Apple Pay card number instead.
- Expecting the refund in Wallet: It normally posts to the underlying card statement.
- Sending every purchase to Apple’s refund portal: Report a Problem is for Apple-billed content.
- Trying to cancel a completed Apple Cash payment: Cancellation is available only while it is pending.
- Removing a card before recording details: This can make it harder to provide the Apple Pay card identifier requested by the merchant.
- Giving away sensitive information: A refund should not require your password, passcode, verification code, or full card number.
Menu names and availability can differ across iOS, watchOS, iPadOS, devices, regions, and card issuers. Apple’s current iPhone user guide references iOS 26; use the current on-screen labels if they differ.
