Proxima Fusion announced a €130 million Series A on June 11, 2025, to advance its planned stellarator-based fusion machines. The round was a major European fusion financing milestone, but it did not prove that commercial fusion had arrived—or that the company had become the world’s best-funded fusion developer.
That distinction matters because Proxima’s funding picture has since changed substantially. In July 2026, the company announced a separate €411 million financing round and said its valuation had reached €2.4 billion. The earlier Series A is therefore best understood as the financing that helped move Proxima from a promising research spinout toward a larger industrial program.
What Proxima Fusion raised
Proxima Fusion’s Series A was announced on June 11, 2025. The company said it raised €130 million, approximately $150 million at the time, in a round co-led by Cherry Ventures and Balderton Capital.

The listed participants included UVC Partners, DeepTech & Climate Fonds, Plural, Leitmotif, Lightspeed, Bayern Kapital, High-Tech Gründerfonds, Club degli Investitori, OMNES Capital, Elaia Partners, Visionaries Tomorrow, Wilbe and redalpine, which had led Proxima’s seed round. The announcement did not disclose the size of each investor’s contribution, so the list does not establish that they invested equally.
The financing was intended to fund engineering, hiring and the next stages of Proxima’s reactor roadmap—not to finance an already operating power plant.
What the money was meant to accomplish
According to Proxima, the Series A was aimed at four principal objectives:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Completing a Stellarator Model Coil, targeted for 2027, to advance the company’s high-temperature-superconductor magnet technology.
- Developing and siting Alpha, the proposed demonstration stellarator.
- Progressing toward Alpha operations, which Proxima targeted for 2031 in its 2025 announcement.
- Expanding the engineering and scientific workforce, described at the time as more than 80 people across Munich, Zurich and Oxford.
These are company targets, not completed milestones. A model coil can reduce uncertainty around magnets, but it cannot by itself validate every magnet, plasma-facing component, maintenance system or fuel-cycle component required by a power plant.
Why Proxima is pursuing a stellarator
Proxima is developing a quasi-isodynamic stellarator using high-temperature-superconducting magnets. Its design work draws on computational optimization and the experimental foundation of the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics’ Wendelstein 7-X stellarator.
Both stellarators and tokamaks use magnetic fields to confine extremely hot plasma. The key difference is how those fields are produced.
| Approach | Potential advantage | Central trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Stellarator | Uses externally shaped magnetic fields and is designed for inherently steady-state operation. | Its complex three-dimensional coils and reactor geometry are difficult to manufacture, assemble and maintain. |
| Tokamak | Has a larger experimental and engineering base across many public fusion programs. | Its plasma current can contribute to disruption-related operating challenges and steady-state operation remains difficult. |
A stellarator is not automatically superior to a tokamak. It represents a different engineering compromise: potentially attractive continuous operation in exchange for complicated magnets, structures and maintenance systems.

Proxima’s approach also depends on high-temperature superconducting magnets. These materials could enable powerful magnetic fields and potentially compact designs, but they must operate under demanding thermal, mechanical and electromagnetic conditions. Demonstrating a component is not the same as proving a complete reactor system.
What “net energy” would mean
Proxima says Alpha is intended to pursue Q > 1. In the usual fusion-experiment context, that means the fusion energy produced would exceed the energy delivered directly to the plasma.

That is a narrower claim than saying a plant produces more electricity than it consumes. Q > 1 does not by itself establish:
- net electricity exported to the grid;
- positive whole-plant energy output;
- commercial reliability or availability;
- positive project economics;
- a working tritium-breeding and fuel-handling system; or
- an economically competitive cost of electricity.
The system boundary matters. A plasma experiment can achieve a favorable physics result while the complete facility still consumes substantial energy for magnets, cryogenics, heating, cooling, fuel processing and other systems.
Proxima’s proposed roadmap
- Stellarator Model Coil: targeted for completion in 2027. This would demonstrate progress in the magnet technology underlying Proxima’s designs.
- Alpha: a proposed demonstration stellarator intended to test the company’s design and pursue net-energy performance. Proxima targeted operations in 2031 in the 2025 announcement.
- Stellaris: a longer-term proposed pilot or commercial-scale stellarator plant that would follow Alpha.
Proxima has described its ambition as building the world’s first commercial stellarator-based fusion power plant. That is a company goal, not an established fact. The meaning of “demonstration,” “pilot” and “commercial” also varies across fusion projects, so headline claims should be treated carefully.
What changed after the Series A
A proposed Bavarian project
On February 26, 2026, Proxima, the Free State of Bavaria, RWE and the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics signed a cooperation agreement covering the potential construction of Alpha near Garching and a possible later Stellaris plant.
The agreement also identified the former RWE nuclear-fission site at Gundremmingen as a possible location for the later commercial plant. The Max Planck Institute’s account describes cooperation on site selection, permitting, financing and public support.
Garching and Gundremmingen should not be treated as interchangeable. Garching is associated with Alpha planning; Gundremmingen is a proposed location for the later Stellaris project. A cooperation agreement is not the same as final site approval, a construction permit or a final investment decision.
A larger financing round
On July 7, 2026, Proxima announced a €411 million financing round. The company said the money would support construction of Alpha, raised its valuation to €2.4 billion and made Proxima Europe’s best-funded fusion company.
That is a company-reported European positioning claim. It should not automatically be extended to the global fusion industry without a current, like-for-like comparison of funding categories and company disclosures.
RWE separately announced a €25 million investment in Proxima on the same day. RWE linked the investment to the cooperation agreement and the possible industrialization of fusion at Gundremmingen. The €25 million should not be casually added to the €411 million without confirming how the transactions relate.

The Alpha Alliance
Proxima also announced an Alpha Alliance involving more than 30 European and international industrial companies. Listed participants include Siemens Energy, Framatome, Eni, Air Liquide, RWE Nuclear, TÜV Rheinland, TRUMPF and Thales.
This is meaningful evidence of industrial and supply-chain engagement. It is not, however, equivalent to a completed reactor, a binding construction contract for Stellaris, guaranteed government funding, regulatory approval or a fully financed commercial plant.

The €130 million Series A placed Proxima among Europe’s better-funded private fusion startups in 2025. It was a substantial round for a company still advancing from design and component development toward a demonstration machine.
The later €411 million financing changes the current picture. As of August 2026, Proxima says it is Europe’s best-funded fusion company. Globally, however, funding comparisons are difficult because companies report different combinations of equity, grants, government support, debt, project finance and strategic investment. The Fusion Industry Association’s 2025 industry report provides useful sector context, but it does not eliminate those comparability problems.
Investor participation demonstrates that sophisticated capital is willing to finance Proxima’s roadmap. It does not independently validate the company’s physics, schedule or projected economics.

What the funding still does not prove
The unresolved questions
- Technical feasibility: Can Proxima translate an optimized stellarator design into manufacturable and maintainable hardware?
- Magnet performance: Can high-temperature-superconducting magnets operate reliably in a complete reactor environment?
- Materials: Can plasma-facing components withstand intense heat and neutron exposure while remaining replaceable?
- Fuel cycle: Can a deuterium-tritium plant breed, extract and handle enough tritium safely?
- Regulation: Can proposed sites obtain the necessary safety, environmental and construction approvals?
- Schedule: Can a project combining frontier physics, nuclear-grade infrastructure and novel manufacturing meet the 2031 Alpha target?
- Economics: Can fusion compete with renewables, storage, transmission, fission and other firm low-carbon technologies?
Capital can accelerate engineering and construction, but it cannot remove these technical, regulatory and commercial uncertainties. A €411 million financing is large enough to change the scale of the program; it is not evidence that a full commercial plant is funded.
How to read the investment story
The most useful interpretation is neither “fusion has arrived” nor “the financing is meaningless.” The Series A gave Proxima resources to build hardware and develop Alpha. The 2026 partnership added a utility, a regional government and a major research institution to the proposed path. The later financing and industrial alliance suggest that the project is moving toward industrialization rather than remaining solely a laboratory venture.
The decisive evidence will come from hardware and operations: the Model Coil, a credible Alpha construction program, demonstrated plasma performance, reliable magnets, maintainable reactor components, a workable fuel cycle, regulatory progress and eventually electricity production at a competitive cost.
