A credit freeze is a free way to make it harder for an identity thief to open new credit in your name: it restricts prospective creditors from accessing your credit file, and it does not affect your credit score. The trade-off is that you will generally need to lift the freeze temporarily when you apply for a loan or credit card. You must arrange the freeze separately with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.
What a credit freeze does—and what it does not do
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau defines a freeze this way: “A credit or security freeze prevents prospective creditors from accessing your credit file.” Because lenders generally review a file when deciding whether to approve new credit, restricting access can make it harder for someone using your identity to open a new account. A freeze is a barrier, not a guarantee against identity theft.
A freeze is not a block on every kind of report access. CFPB guidance describes limited exceptions, including access by existing creditors, certain government entities, and companies hired to monitor your file. A freeze also does not stop someone from using a card or account that is already open in your name.

Pros of freezing your credit
- It is free. There is no charge to place, lift, or temporarily lift a security freeze.
- It does not lower your credit score. The freeze restricts access to your file; it does not change the score itself.
- You do not have to wait for a breach. Anyone can request a freeze, whether or not they have experienced identity theft.
- It can stay in place until you lift it. You choose when to make your file available to prospective creditors again.
Cons and practical limits
- Applying for new credit takes an extra step. A lender will generally need access to your file, so ask which bureau or bureaus it will check and arrange a temporary lift at the relevant bureau or bureaus.
- You must set it up separately at three bureaus. To freeze all three nationwide credit files, contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion individually.
- It does not protect existing accounts from misuse. Keep reviewing account statements and credit reports, and act promptly if you spot suspicious charges or accounts.
A freeze does not prevent using existing cards or applying for a job, renting a home, or buying insurance. Those activities are different from seeking new credit, for which a prospective creditor will generally need access to your report.

How to place a freeze and lift it for an application
- Contact each bureau separately. Use the official freeze instructions at Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. There is no fee to place a freeze.
- Before applying for credit, ask the lender which bureau or bureaus it will use. If you know which file it needs, you may be able to lift only that bureau’s freeze rather than all three.
- Request a temporary lift through the relevant bureau or bureaus. After the creditor has completed its check, reinstate the freeze if you want it in place again.
Under the CFPB’s federal guidance, a nationwide credit reporting company must place a freeze within one business day after a request by phone or secure electronic means, or within three business days after a mailed request. For a requested temporary lift, the deadlines are within one hour for phone or secure electronic requests, or within three business days for mail. Check the bureau’s current instructions before making an application, since online procedures can change. The CFPB page was last reviewed September 5, 2025.
Freeze, fraud alert, or credit lock?
These options work differently. A freeze restricts prospective creditors’ access to your file; a fraud alert asks businesses to verify your identity but does not block report access. A credit lock is a bureau product, sometimes bundled with paid services. CFPB guidance says locks are no more effective than statutory security freezes, which are free.

If you are unsure which tool fits, consider whether you want to restrict access to your file or ask creditors to verify your identity. A freeze is available without a confirmed theft or breach; an extended fraud alert has identity-theft documentation requirements. A parent or guardian may request a free freeze for a child under 16. The process differs from an adult freeze, and a bureau may need to create a protected-consumer record if the child does not already have a credit file. Federal protections also cover certain incapacitated people and people with an appointed guardian. Contact each bureau for its current documentation and submission requirements.

What to do if you find fraud
A freeze is aimed at preventing new-account fraud; it does not stop charges on existing accounts or undo misuse that has already happened. If you notice an unfamiliar charge, account, or inquiry, contact the affected financial institution or creditor promptly and follow the steps in the FTC’s IdentityTheft.gov recovery guidance. Continue checking statements and reports even while a freeze is active.
