On August 12, 1999, PRI Automation announced a multimillion-dollar order to supply wafer-logistics and manufacturing-execution systems for TSMC’s Fab 6 in Tainan, Taiwan. The order covered storage, transport, material control and production software—not the process tools that make chips. The announcement documents a supplier contract, not proof that PRI automated the entire fab or that the system delivered measured production gains.

What PRI was contracted to supply

The contemporary trade-press report described a plant-wide automation package intended to manage work-in-progress material and coordinate its movement through Fab 6. It named five products:

  • TurboStockers and Reticle Stockers for automated storage of wafer material and reticles.
  • AeroTrak transport components for moving wafer carriers through the facility.
  • TransNet for material control and coordination.
  • Promis manufacturing-execution-system (MES) software for production information and workflow control.

These functions form connected layers: storage holds material, transport moves it, material-control software coordinates and tracks movement, and MES links material status with production workflow. The announcement does not specify how the components were integrated or what interfaces they used. EE Times’ August 12, 1999 report and the substantially similar EDN report from the same date describe the order; they are not separate deals.

What “automate Fab 6” meant

Here, automation means factory logistics and production coordination: storing wafers and reticles, transporting wafer carriers, tracking work in progress (WIP), and coordinating production information. It does not mean that PRI supplied lithography, etch, deposition, metrology, process recipes, facilities controls or every element of fab control.

Reticles—the patterned plates used in photolithography—require handling and storage distinct from wafer-carrier movement, which is why the report names separate reticle stockers. The described system could support WIP visibility: knowing where material is and coordinating its next movement or production step. Those are intended functions of the listed equipment and software, not published measurements of Fab 6’s performance.

Neither the report nor the company statements establish a fully autonomous or “lights-out” fab. They do not claim that human operators were eliminated or that PRI automatically controlled every process tool.

Why Fab 6 mattered to TSMC

Fab 6 was TSMC’s first fab in Tainan Science-Based Industrial Park, extending the company’s manufacturing presence into southern Taiwan. TSMC described it as an eight-inch-wafer facility and a major expansion being brought into production around 1999–2000. Its planned process range ran from 0.25 micron toward 0.10 micron technology.

When announcing the fab’s opening on March 30, 2000, TSMC expected capacity to reach 32,000 eight-inch wafer starts per month by the end of 2000 and more than 50,000 per month by the end of 2001. These were targets stated at the time, not evidence here of the eventual achieved output. TSMC also called Fab 6 the world’s largest semiconductor fab in its opening announcement; that is the company’s historical description, not a current ranking. Details and the company’s chronology appear in TSMC’s Fab 6 opening announcement.

  • Three Phase DIN Rail Power Supply 24V 240W with Dual-Phase Redundancy – Accepts 340-550VAC or 480-780VDC. If one phase drops, L1/L3 or L2/L3 operation keeps your 24V 10A industrial DIN rail power supply running.
  • Low Harmonic Current DIN Rail Supply with PFC Function – Passive PFC meets EN61000-3-2, reducing harmonic pollution. Clean 24V output with 100mVp-p ripple supports sensitive PLC and sensor loads.
  • Slim DIN Rail Power Supply 240W with DC OK Relay – Only 63mm wide for space-saving DIN rail mount. DC OK relay sends real-time status to PLC/HMI for predictive maintenance in factory automation power supply 24VDC systems.
  • 92% Efficiency for Semiconductor and Electromechanical Equipment – Fanless design operates from -30°C to +70°C. Ideal as a semiconductor equipment power supply or electromechanical equipment power supply with overload constant-current protection.

A fab handling diverse product lines has to coordinate material movement and production status across different routes. In that context, logistics automation could help provide more consistent movement and WIP tracking, while MES could connect production information with material flow. The original report quotes Fab 6 director YC Chao saying TSMC selected PRI for its understanding of complex manufacturing requirements and the need for flexibility. These are the customer’s stated reasons, not independent measurements of system performance.

PRI was extending an existing TSMC relationship

The 1999 report said TSMC Fab 5 was already adopting PRI advanced planning and scheduling software, material-handling systems and MES. It also said a TSMC–Acer joint venture was implementing PRI’s Promis software. The Fab 6 order therefore represented an expansion of an existing supplier relationship, rather than a first-time customer win.

  • Warranty—Each unit undergoes aging tests. Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) >2,777.2K hours, with a 2-year warranty. Automatic recovery minimizes downtime for critical industrial assets

PRI chief executive Mitch Tyson presented the order as evidence of the company’s position in demanding semiconductor manufacturing environments and as a sign of strength in bookings. That was the executive’s characterization; the brief report does not independently establish PRI’s market position.

Fab 6 timeline

Date Milestone
July 1998 TSMC later said construction of Fab 6 began.
August 12, 1999 The PRI Automation order was reported.
December 1999 TSMC said Fab 6 completed pilot wafers.
January 2000 TSMC said the fab produced its first production wafers.
March 30, 2000 TSMC announced Fab 6’s grand opening.

TSMC’s detailed March 2000 account gives January 2000 as the first-production-wafer date. A separate TSMC page retrieved for the period says volume production began in January 1999, which conflicts with that chronology and appears to be a date error or transcription problem; the detailed opening announcement is the clearer basis for the timeline. TSMC’s contemporaneous 1999 corporate news also described the accelerated Fab 6 ramp and Tainan expansion: TSMC’s 1999 news page.

What the announcement does not establish

The order was described as multimillion-dollar, but the report did not disclose an exact contract value. Nor does it give unit quantities, transport throughput, software versions, deployment dates, staffing changes, yield effects or cycle-time improvements. It records an order; it does not independently verify commissioning, integration success, realized benefits or the long-term commercial relationship.

TSMC’s later report that Fab 6 reached pilot and production milestones establishes the fab’s progress, but does not measure PRI’s contribution to it. Likewise, TSMC’s forecast capacity figures should not be read as confirmed output. The available accounts support a specific historical supplier-order story about logistics and MES—not a claim that PRI built or ran Fab 6.
