Historical price recap: During Sony’s U.S. Black Friday 2024 promotion, the PS5 Slim Digital Edition was advertised for about $374–$375, and the Disc Edition for about $424–$425—roughly $75 below their respective reference prices. Fortnite Cobalt Star bundles were reported at the same prices as the matching consoles. Sony’s promotion ran November 22 through December 2, 2024; these are past prices, not current offers.

The $374/$424 figures appeared in Tom’s Guide price checks, while 9to5Toys reported rounded prices of $375/$425 in retailer-ad coverage. Treat the one-dollar difference as a variation between retailer listings or reporting snapshots, not as a materially different promotion. These were advertised prices before any applicable tax or shipping; final checkout totals could vary.

Sony’s Black Friday 2024 announcement set the promotion window at November 22–December 2 and said offers varied by region, retailer, product and stock. The announcement confirms the promotion and offer categories, but does not provide a complete store-by-store price list. The exact prices above come from contemporaneous retailer and deal coverage: Tom’s Guide and 9to5Toys.
Cheapest entry: PS5 Slim Digital Edition
At roughly $375, the Digital Edition had the lowest reported console price. It made sense for someone who buys games through the PlayStation Store, does not own a collection of physical discs and wanted to minimize the initial purchase cost. The standard console package included one DualSense controller.

The trade-off is permanent unless you buy compatible add-on hardware later: the Digital Edition cannot play PS5 or compatible PS4 game discs. That rules out pre-owned physical games, lending or reselling disc copies, and 4K UHD Blu-ray playback. Digital buyers are also more dependent on Sony Store pricing and sales. A disc does not eliminate game downloads or updates, but physical ownership can provide access to used-game pricing and resale options.
More flexibility for about $50 more: PS5 Slim Disc Edition
The Disc Edition was about $50 more than the Digital model during the promotion, at approximately $424–$425. That premium bought the option to play physical PS5 and compatible PS4 games, buy used or discounted discs, lend or resell games, and watch 4K UHD Blu-ray discs. For a buyer who regularly finds physical games at lower prices, one or two purchases could help offset the price gap; the actual break-even point depends on game prices and how often the buyer uses discs.
The disc model is not automatically the better deal. It costs more upfront and offers little added value to someone who expects to buy everything digitally. Choose based on how you actually buy and use games, rather than the sticker price alone.

- Pick Digital at $374–$375 if you are comfortable with downloads and want the lowest upfront cost.
- Pick Disc at $424–$425 if you own discs, shop used, expect to resell or lend games, or want Blu-ray playback.
- If you are unsure, the Disc Edition preserves more options. Adding a disc drive later increases the Digital Edition’s total cost.
Were the Fortnite Cobalt Star bundles worthwhile?
Retailer-ad coverage put the Fortnite Cobalt Star Digital Bundle at $375 and the Disc Bundle at $425—effectively the same headline price as the corresponding discounted console. For someone who played Fortnite and wanted the included cosmetic or in-game content, that made the bundle a potentially better pick than a plain console at the same price.

Those extras are not the same as a full game, a second controller or cash, and they have no assumed resale value. If you did not play Fortnite or value its included content, the bundle did not create a meaningful saving over the matching standalone console. Bundle contents, regional availability and stock could also vary.
Where the deals appeared—and why stock mattered
Contemporaneous price checks reported the Digital Edition at $374 at Best Buy, Walmart and PlayStation Direct, and the Disc Edition at $424 at Best Buy and Walmart. 9to5Toys reported the rounded $375 and $425 advertised prices and covered the Fortnite bundles. Amazon inventory changed during the event: Tom’s Guide reported the Digital Edition sold out at one point and later restocked at $374. Target also advertised select console offers and Fortnite bundles, while individual retailer schedules differed; Walmart’s major Black Friday event was reported to begin November 25.
These are historical snapshots, not proof that every store had every model continuously available. Sony’s overall window does not mean an individual listing lasted through December 2. Availability could change with restocks, sellouts, store pickup and regional stock. A present-day product page cannot verify an expired 2024 price.
Was $374–$375 the lowest price?
It was among the lowest widely reported Black Friday 2024 prices for the Slim Digital Edition, with $424–$425 the corresponding Disc Edition range. Tom’s Guide described $374 as the lowest price it had seen for the Digital model at the time. That is a publication’s tracked price history, not proof of an all-time or market-wide low.
A roughly $75 reduction from the cited $449/$499 reference prices was meaningful, especially for buyers already planning to purchase a PS5. The Digital Edition was the cheapest way in; the Disc model could be the stronger all-purpose value for buyers who would use physical media. The Fortnite bundle made sense chiefly for Fortnite players. Inventory was uneven, so the best option in practice depended on what was actually in stock when a shopper checked.
What to check on a listing
- Confirm that the product is the Digital Edition or Disc Edition you intend to buy; listings can use “PS5 Slim” without making the configuration obvious.
- Check that it is new, and confirm whether the seller is the retailer or a third-party marketplace seller. Refurbished, used, imported and accessory-only listings can appear beside console offers.
- Read the bundle contents carefully. Fortnite content, a game and an extra controller are different kinds of value.
- Verify the model and storage capacity, shipping estimate or pickup availability, and the final price before tax and shipping.
- Review the return and price-adjustment terms. Do not assume a retailer will honor an advertised price after a listing sells out.
- Check the controller count. Most standard PS5 packages included one DualSense; the separately reported $475 offer was notable because it included an extra controller.
For current product listings, Sony’s PlayStation Direct hardware page is a destination, not evidence that the 2024 sale price remains available. This recap is specifically about U.S. Black Friday 2024 pricing; Sony said offers varied by region.
